JMM was so huge, I think he should have made it higher. I always kinda liked him but his success can’t be denied either way.
Kenny was much bigger in the 2000s so him going early is fine.
Thankfully Tanya is done. So overrated.

Chapin at 32. You have to be kidding me. I'm so over this rankdown.

Joe Diffie has some jams but he's someone who I've developed a lot of fatigue with several of his hits over the years due to overplay, because so many of them are so fluffy and just not the kind of stuff I want to hear constantly. "Third Rock from the Sun" is the exception.

Damn, Randy Travis was my highest ranked male artist. His voice is just so smooth and strong and his music is quintessential 80s/90s.

That's all for tonight! Gotta clean up these tumbleweeds now... :)
Something interesting to note is that 30 and 26 are 8 points apart. 30 and 24 are 11 points apart. 👀

I really like Collin Raye and its easy to forget how massive he was radio-wise.
Toby is a little low for the impact he had on the genre. I would have liked to see him make the top 20.
I ranked Deana Carter really high because I LOVE her but I do think its her time now.

Toby is a little low for the impact he had on the genre. I would have liked to see him make the top 20. I ranked Toby low because he really didn't hit his stride until the How Do You Like Me Now?! era, and that didn't come around until the end of the decade in late 1999. Given that, I've never really considered Toby a true icon of '90s country (well, aside from "Should've Been a Cowboy" of course) and would rank him higher for the '00s. I'm looking at a few of those high ranks ( bboat11 !) and that leaves me wondering if too much emphasis was put onto the success he saw in the 2000s, because I personally wouldn't think his '90s output qualifies him as being one of the top ten country artists for this decade.

Toby's '90s output is consistently great! With his peak in the '00s came his penchant for recording more novelty-type songs. Song-for-song, his '00s work was bigger, but his '90s work was better (all while still being plenty big in their own right).

Song-for-song, his '00s work was bigger, but his '90s work was better (all while still being plenty big in their own right). Oh, I can't argue with you there! There's plenty in Toby's '90s output that I enjoy including "Dream Walkin'", "We Were in Love", and the all but forgotten "Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You" (such an underrated gem!). I tend to split Toby's career into two between the pre- HDYLMN era and the post- HDYLMN era (much like I do with George in regards to the Jimmy Bowen/Tony Brown eras). Aside from 1994's "Who's That Man", the only other '90s songs you'll even hear from Toby on country radio are from his debut album in 1993; everything else that is played is post- HDYLMN. He had a much bigger impact on the genre as we moved into the new millennium, therefore should we ever do a rankdown for the Icons of '00s Country I can tell you he'll for sure escape my bottom 5 then lol.

The 90s were literally the decade when women were at their peak at country radio, so the fact that any men made it that high on my list is impressive due to how strong the competition was. Randy probably wouldn't have even made my top 20 if we'd included more of the female hitmakers of that time, but I realize why some were left off (like Sara Evans, i.e.). I could've surely bumped Martina down though if you were so concerned for the men.

However, alongside them, the men of the '90s were also making some of the best male country music of our lifetimes as well. It was just such a great decade all around! And there is no question that people like George Strait, Tim McGraw, and Alan Jackson at the very least made great enough music and a big enough impact to be ranked above people like Pam Tillis, Deana Carter, and at least a few of the other women who are still in. It's just so on-brand for you to have your highest male artist barely even be in the top half of your list, which is hilarious enough to be worth mentioning. There's no shade, it's just funny ;)

I think Alabama's success in the '80s has kind of overshadowed the rest of their long career, but I think those stats pretty much speak for themselves: 22 Top 10 Hits and 5 #1 Hits along with three Gold, six Platinum, one Double Platinum, and TWO 5X Platinum Albums! They may have no longer been winning CMA Awards, but they were still quite influential in the early to mid '90s and were always out on the road touring the country. In fact, they used to come to Omaha, Nebraska, every year and for quite some time performed five shows over the course of a week. I got the chance to see them a couple times in the '90s and I remember that they had just released their new single "She Ain't Your Ordinary Girl" (this would've been in the summer of 1995)...anyways, the song was so new to them that even Randy Owen had to look at a sheet with the lyrics just to sing it lol. It wasn't until about 1997 and thereafter that their commercial success certainly began to cool off.
Diamond Rio was always right there alongside as I grew up with country radio in the '90s and the same goes for CMT as they were always releasing music videos for their singles. Their debut album is probably my favorite as it not only contains their signature hit "Meet in the Middle", but also two of my other favorites "Norma Jean Riley" and "Nowhere Bound". I also got to see them live but only once as they came to our local county fair in Nebraska one summer (I think it was 1997).

at Alabama and Diamond Rio being tied. For both groups, when I like their songs, I love them. But they are far from my favorite artists because I am completely indifferent to at least 85% of their material. Alabama spend way too much time in their Southern Pride mentality, and Diamond Rio's vocals are an acquired taste that only works for me on certain songs. That said, "I'm In A Hurry (And Don't Know Why)" is one of the best group songs of all time!!!

Two Icons of '90s Country will not be making the Top 20. Any guesses as to which two it could be???
