Today marks the second anniversary of Lil Nas X's Old Town Road, the song didn't start to smash until early 2019 when a remix featuring country legend and former one hit wonder Billy Ray Cyrus sent it over the top. One controversy later, the song spent a record-breaking 19 consecutive weeks at #1 and 26 weeks in the Top 10, it ended as the biggest song of 2019 and the 7th biggest song of the 2010s decade. It's also one of the best-selling digital songs off all time and holds the record for fastest song to be certified diamond. The song additionally peaked at #3 on Pop.
A freaking monster hit

it's so crazy how it already feels like a classic and it isn't even that old.

What happens you let a rapper new on the scene and a country legend known more in the 90s loose? They create an iconic and insanely successful hit, it's crazy that this is just 2 years old (with the original version's release), yet it already felt like a classic. The summer of 2019 was a fun time for me, and this is one of those songs that really defined that time period.
When it got to 17 weeks at #1, I'm genuinely surprised that Lil Nas X managed to best Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber and I had to admit, he and Billy really deserved that huge achievement.

I had no clue this was released in 2018. I didn't even know of this song's existence until it started to blow up on streaming. As much as I loved this song in 2019, I don't really care too much for it now. Old Town Road feels like the definition of novelty song. Granted, the chart run was fun to watch and something I don't think we will see again for a long time. Plus, a country rap song featuring a gay rapper and a 90's one-hit-wonder country singer: it's hard not to root for it.

Yeah I don't get it either and I think any sort of conversation around it died the week it dropped from the charts.

Memes and chart success aside, this is a great song. When people look back upon the 2010s (particularly the Late 2010s), this is one of the first songs they'll think of.
