I thought this was the only thread worth reviving because it was interesting to see who was able to balance a career in music and in TV.
Daveed Diggs - has been able to put out acclaimed albums under clipping. while being cast in TV shows, movies, and of course Hamilton
Donald Glover - put out albums under the Childish Gambino name while being in Community and even still while creating and producing Atlanta
Ice T - has been a long-running SVU cast member
Jennifer Hudson - oscar-winner, Mariah could never (please don't kill me Lambs)

Many of the Disney stars in their early years:
Hilary Duff - released 2 albums and a compilation while starring in multiple Disney Channel shows & movies, went on to sporadically release more music and obtain several movie roles, now focuses pretty much solely on acting
Lindsay Lohan - released 2 albums while upholding a budding acting career, now hardly does either lol
Aly & AJ - actually they both still act and make music simultaneously! Originally both were in various Disney Channel shows/movies during their first three albums, then a bunch of not great behind the scenes stuff happened with their music career, both got a few acting roles, then they turned indie while simultaneously landing major network starring roles. (Though Aly's has ended.)
Selena Gomez - balances music, sporadic acting, and the occasional directing I guess?
Demi Lovato - had the whole Disney Channel thing going on during her first two albums, almost exclusively does music now though
Raven-Symonรฉ - been acting and making music since she was essentially a baby, though recently began to focus solely on acting
Miley Cyrus - her entire start was on a musical TV show lol, but since then she has held a respectable name in both film and music, though focuses more on music
Ashley Tisdale - in the late 2000s she did both simultaneously, though now her focus seems to be more in the behind the scenes of television with a hobby in music
Vanessa Hudgens - went from blowing up in a Disney musical to securing different major teen roles with a budding music career only to let it all crumble before her so now she just plays the same character over and over again on shitty holiday Netflix films and whatever low budget Christian family value film about dogs she can get, probably she even forgot she made music
Not much on the Nickelodeon side, interestingly. Either they went completely into music and abandoned acting like Ariana Grande or made like one obscure album and bolted back to acting like Miranda Cosgrove.

Jennifer Lopez comes to mind. She wasn't particularly good at either acting or singing, but she managed to have a big career in both.

Either they went completely into music and abandoned acting like Ariana Grande Although I guess Ariana is making a return to acting. She is gonna be in a new netflix film with some big name actors and there is talk of her taking the role of Megara in the live-action Hercules remake

Barbra Streisand did this for most of her career. Often she'd have a hit movie and album quite close together.

This is a fun discussion.ย
Not all applicable, but the following musicians/vocalists were nominated for acting Oscars:
John Travolta (mostly in musical films, had a #10 hit on the Hot 100 in 1976) Bing Crosby (enormously successful singer in addition to acting) Dexter Gordon (jazz legend, eventually nominated for Best Actor in 1986) Topol (prolific recording artist, in addition to Fiddler on the Roof) Will Smith (music mostly gave way to acting, but still...) Lady Gaga Cher Bette Midler Diana Ross Orson Welles (popped up with a random, short-lived recording career in 1984 with some semblance of a cult following) Barbra Streisand Debbie Reynolds Jamie Foxx Ann-Margret Mark Wahlberg (short-lived music career that barely crossed paths with his acting notoriety) Eddie Murphy (lol) Bobby Darin Jared Leto Dan Aykroyrd (The Blues Brothers became a popular music act on their own accord, even outside of film and television) Frank Sinatra Doris Day Judy Garland Burl Ives Jackie Gleason (hugely successful career as a composer/bandleader outside of his acting career) Sal Mineo (had two Top 40 hits on the Hot 100) Anthony Perkins (brief recording career, had a #24 hit on the Hot 100) Walter Brennan (had two Hot 100 hits, including a #5 hit at age 67) Queen Latifah Peggy Lee Mary J. Blige Jennifer Hudson Shirley Jones (long music career, culminating with her acting as the matriarch of the Partridge Family) Julie Andrews (often ventured into recordings, Christmas albums, etc.) Ethel Waters Liza Minnelli Theodore Bikel (a recording artist in many languages, he also co-founded the Newport Folk Festival) Fred Astaire (most of his hit records were from films, but not all)
I did not count actors who sing only in film and theater performances, or who scored a hit song or two with songs from films (Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Kendrick, etc.)

Not to gatekeep or anything but for some of these actors feel, it feels their music careers were more side-ventures and not as serious as their acting careers - vanity projects dare i say. I guess I was just looking for actors/singers who were successful at both

Thought of a few more that haven't been mentioned:
Common - it's weird to think that Common's been in a lot of movies and not just small productions either, he's been in big blockbusters like Terminator Salvation and John Wick 2
T.I. - speaking of rappers who are in a surprising amount of films
Justin Timberlake - I think in the past ten years, Justin's been working in movies than in the music
Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube - I think this is more of a case of type-casting, especially for comedy or kids movies, but they still have a length filmography
Sabrina Carpenter - she's still doing acting but it seems her music is the focus

Surprised no one has mentioned Janelle Monae yet--she's proving herself to be an excellent actress in addition to a pretty stellar music career.

Britney Spears should have made this list, but Crossroads negatively impacted the talent pool so much that it's understandable why she didn't. Virtually every A list actress was finding themself second to Spears for any given role after Britney's critically acclaimed performance. The only reason she and Kate Hudson are friends is because Kate was one of the few who didn't chase her out of the industry and actually respected her for her talents.

Jennifer Hudson - oscar-winner, Mariah could never (please don't kill me Lambs)Does J Hud have a music career, though? Barbra Streisand did this for most of her career. Often she'd have a hit movie and album quite close together. Streisand, Sinatra, and Bing Crosby are the first three I thought of. They were hugely successful in both. Oh, and Elvis. It was a real thing back then. Cher did well in both in the 80s and early 90s.

Hmm, perhaps not in the traditional sense of putting out songs and albums no, but she's definitely in the camp of celebrities like say Josh Groban or Michael Bublรฉ or Susan Boyle who are known for their singing talent rather than any original material.

Is this a thread for dual CAREERS at the same time of acting and singing? Would seem to me to be a pretty short list if that was the case
On the other hand if we are listing actors by trade who just happened to have a hit song or singers who showed up in a movie or two, the list would be quite big,
Will Smith comes to mind that was big at both long enough to fit the first category. There are a few others but not that many

There are a few others but not that many I think I want this thread to be more a highlight of those were able to have successful careers in both departments. Obviously having an active acting career and an active singing career is difficult without sacrificing time for one or the other. It's fine if a singer has mostly transitioned into acting like Queen Latifah or Jennifer Hudson even, as long as they were successful as both a singer or a rapper

Yeah, Will Smith is definitely an excellent example here, even if he's more known as an actor these days. But in the 90s he was doing acting and rapping during the same period, and with huge success on both.
Another example, though not 'at the same time', is Billie Piper. She started off as a teen pop singer, and became the youngest female artist to hit #1 on the UK Singles Chart. She had three #3 hits in total. Then, however, she quit music to pursue acting, and gathered huge success in "Doctor Who" and "Penny Dreadful", to name a few.
