This is one of the few songs from this band to chart on the Hot 100 but not make a rock chart rankdown. Another song from them to do this is "Everybody Hurts" which will be in the Mid 90s I rankdown. #9

Stats to consider for #8:
The #1s just keep falling as another goes out here. It looked like this song might have secured a spot in the top 5 but was knocked down right at the end. Only 2 of us did not rank this song top half.

This next song was tied with #6 in points. Although it received the fewest top 10s of any song in the top 10, 4 of these were top 5s including a #2. This song was in the top 10 most of the way only briefly being kept out of it for 1 movement.

Originally released in 1984 this did chart briefly in March 1985. The song was later re-released as part of a singles compilation album in 1988 whereupon it did better on the Hot 100. It was a #1 hit in Sweden and also reached the top 5 in Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Brazil and Italy. #6

Color me surprised that Thorn in My Side and Love Comes Quickly are still in this thing. Both are fine songs, but nowhere near their best IMO.
I'm rooting for Run DMC or Depeche Mode for the win. It's Tricky would be a great win.

Not only did Inner City make the top 10 this time, they were able to make it all the way to the top 5. This song was a #1 hit on Billboard's Dance chart. It was very successful worldwide going to #1 in Finland and reaching the top 10 in 9 other countries. #4

Stats to consider for #3:
So which song will miss out on being in the final 2? The song at #3 spent time in first place and the majority of its movements were in the top 3. 6 people ranked this song in their top 5. However, it was a considerable distance away from making the top 2 needing 70 more points to do so.

LOVE COMES QUICKLY vs. NEVER LET ME DOWN AGAIN Which song will win the Late 80s III rankdown? Will the Pet Shop Boys defend their title after winning the second Late 80s rankdown with "Domino Dancing" or will Depeche Mode avenge their #3 finish from Mid 80s I with "People Are People"? In total, the 2 songs received 22 top 10 rankings between them, 16 of these being top 5s. Each also received at least one #1 ranking. All of us ranked at least one of these two songs top 10 and only 4 people didn't have one of these in their top 5. Both songs had low standard deviations with one having the 3rd lowest and the other the lowest SD of the rankdown. Both songs spent time in the lead and these two were the frontrunners for most of the rankdown. As for the point gap, in the end these two songs were separated by 33 points. 7 #1s are still in play: Troy , singingrulebritannia , newpower , aerodynamite , BBđ , and peacebone as well as my own. Who will get to see their favorite come out on top? Find out in a few minutes...

That concludes the third and final Lost Hits of the Late 80s rankdown! Thanks again to all who sent in a ranking. And how about a special shout out to those posters who've participated in all 3 Late 80s rankdowns: Troy , singingrulebritannia , Mirago , mamooshka , Doc Indie Party Rock , gonecountry , newpower , and Juanca . I hope these rankdowns have been worth your while and done justice in representing this era of the 1980s. As for the results themselves, it probably isn't too surprising that it came down to "Never Let Me Down Again" and "Love Comes Quickly". I was unsure which would be able to prevail though. Even though Depeche Mode received more #1s, with all but one of us ranking the Pet Shop Boys top 10, this was a pretty decisive victory for "Love Comes Quickly". At the moment I'm not entirely sure which rankdown will be next in the Lost Hits series. It will likely be either the Mid 80s III or Mid 90s I rankdown since the song lists for both of those have been mostly figured out at this point. It may be a little bit though as I'll be hosting another rankdown in the meantime. Until next time... {FINAL STATS}

Pretty content with these results! Wouldâve been cool to see âDonât Give Upâ go a bit further but honestly top ten is dope. Pleasantly surprised âItâs Trickyâ made it to the top three!
Thanks for hosting Rowell!

I'm not the biggest fan of this top 10, but at least my last top 10 remaining took the crown. 10. Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel and Kate BushThis was excruciatingly boring. I know both this artists are PULSE hard -ons, but this didn't do nothing for me , but wish I could speed up time (while it was on). In Garbriel's defense I love "Shock The Monkey" more than anyone in this game. 9. Pop Song 89 - R.E.M.Lyrically some of their songs make me uncomfortable. This wasn't so bad in music department. Infact , it was pretty melodic for amatuer R.E.M, but I didn't need R.E.M until the 90's. 8. Handle with Care - Traveling WilburysPetty decent for all the iconic vocals. There are few other songs from this Super group I prefer. 7. All I Want Is You - U2Not a very popular one from the album, and wayyyyyyyyyy tooooooo mellow for my U2 playlist. "Desire" would have made my top 5 easily. 6. Forever Young - AlphavilleKinda surprised it makes it this high after "Big In Japan's showing, but whatever. This was a huge hit all over the world. I like it on a Synthpop ballad level, but my personal best will forever be "Big In Japan". 5. Thorn in My Side - EurythmicsI preferred their New Wave/Sunthpop style way more, but this was a melodic devil on many levels, and I could still here the strings from their first album. 4. Good Life - Inner City While you guys were listening to this I was listening to High Energy ,and Latin Freestyle. 'nuff siad. 3. It's Tricky - Run-D.M.C.Not exactly one of the ones I hated, but nothing I feel compelled to have in my mp3 collection. The only song I have in my 45' collection from these guys is "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith. 2. Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche ModeThis is one of my least favorite songs from their discography. It's not about the NRG. I do like "Question of Lust" and other haunting sounding ones, but this particular song never clicked with me. 1. Love Comes Quickly - Pet Shop Boys At the same time this is one of my favorites from Pet Shop Boys. Not that I don't love them all. This isn't one of their most NRGetic, but still hauntingly beautiful, and I have it on 12' vinyl. rowellfarm490 . great job with the hosting. I obviously grew up in a different 80's circle than most, but I still have a blast doing any RD based on 80's music. Also guys. Don't listen to rock on cell phones, and buy some real speakers for your lap tops. preferably ones with a Sub woofer. ;)

Wow, I can't believe LCQ won this. I thought it won't make it to the top 10. One of the many minor hits by PSB. The Shep Pettibone Mastermix is perfection. Thanks for hosting rowellfarm490

Sorry I missed the action!!! Had to undergo a (minor) surgery and deal with some covid issues with relatives in my home country that took me out of Pulse... Sharing now comments on songs where my ranking diverged from the final RD position the most. 50. Women (12): I donât recall hearing this song in the 80s. I watched the video in the 90s, as a music tv channel would have 30-min specials with an artist, and DL was a guest a couple times. In any case I was not that familiar with the song before this RD, but I loved it. Itâs got the typical polished but powerful late-80s rock sound that DL mastered. Surprised itâs #50, considering there are several much less melodic and more weakly produced tunes in this RD. 49. Wishing I Was Lucky (15): This was my favorite discovery, but Iâll admit it took me several listens to love it. Initially I had it in my 30s, but the more I heard it the more I got the richness of its production, the layered vocals, and the additional verse melodies that may be overlooked by the chorus melody thatâs repeated a bit more often than it should. Plus, this is a great representation of the last breathes of 80s sophistipop, a style I love. Btw, I didnât know WWW had hits in the 80s, I only knew them from Love is all around onwards. 47. I Feel the Earth Move (31): Another song that needed a couple more listens for me to rank it this high. I remember not caring much for it in â89, but in this RD I appreciated the dynamic, rich, Hi-NRG and pre-90s-techno production, which made me rank it higher than several songs that may be better melodically but much less interesting soundwise. 44. Stop (20): My third favorite discovery in this RD. The girl SANG this one. Even if the melody may be a bit too old school for cool, I had to give extra points for one of the best, most emotional vocal performances in this RD. 43. Youth Gone Wild (27): Nice discovery with classic mid-80s rock instrumental, especially the guitars and drums. I also liked the vocals (including the arena-ready group vocals). I found it much more interesting than Heartâs ILCK (which I ranked in my 30s because I didnât like how the synths cheapened the sound, and the melody wasnât as catchy even if the vocals were as great as expected). 41. A Kind of Magic (30): I had this pre-ranked in my bottom 10, as Iâve always considered it a bit of a disappointment, especially ´cause of its (lazy) melody. With a few more listens before this RD, I appreciated a bit more the vocal arrangement and instrumentation, including Brianâs guitar. The song was their last top 30 in my personal chart before Innuendo. 38. Theme from S-Express (17): my second favorite discovery in this RD. I really liked the forward looking sound and the melody underneath. They were clear trendsetters and trailblazers with the sampling orgy and an evolution of the hi-NRG and synthpop style. 37. Oh Yeah (49): this was the opposite to S-Express in terms of discoveries. I didnât find the melody that strong or catchy or the production interesting. 36. The Only Way Is Up (16): this video had a lot of rotation in our main tv music channel, so it has lot of nostalgia attached to it. I still find it catchy and uplifting, and I really like her vocals, even when it may seem a bit generic. 34. Colors (48): another underwhelming discovery to me, especially the chorus. 33. Love in the First Degree (11): to be honest, back then I thought this was cute but generic and a bit childish, so it barely reached my top 30. Several years later when I bought their greatest hits cd I changed my mind and appreciated better the catchiness of its choruses and the more mature sounding verses, and their vocals. But I do get that many would consider this as a very bubble-gum, plastic song... 31. Running in the Family (47): the only songs played in pop radios were Lessons and Something. I heard this when I bought their Level Best CD, and I thought it was ok. In this RD it was my leafy favorite sophistipop or new wave tune, both in terms of melody and instrumental... 29. Misfit (44): ... and this was my third to last favorite, following L42 and FYC. I like the production and melody better but not enough to escape my bottom 10. 26. Englishman in New York (1): What??!!! I was so happy I was one of two with all top 10s remaining, so this was like a bucket of ice water thrown at me actually I didnât know this had flopped that bad in the US! This was a big hit in Peru, with great recurrent airplay, only surpassed by If you love somebody. It was a personal chart topper and is still one of my favorite songs by Sting, which I like hearing once in a while. I love his layered vocals, rich instrumental (eg pipes!), and all the different melodic sections including the bridge. Plus, I used this as a key song in my personal soundtrack during my first year in the US -living in NY :) 24. Dance Little Sister (41): this was an interesting discovery, which I may have slightly under ranked. I do like the funk, Prince vibe, the instrumental and vocals, although the melody in the verses were a letdown. Donât mind seeing it this high, though

20. Criticize (26): great discovery! I really liked its polished, modern production with hints of classic kool & the gang, plus the strong lead and backing female vocals, and the overall melody. 19. Iâm bad (28): nice discovery, in terms of melody, lyrics and production including the Swat sample. I liked other songs a bit more, but Iâm glad itâs this high. 18. Cry Wolf (14): this was their third hit in Peru (following ToM and TSASoTV) although not their last (Maybe Maybe would be their final big hit), which also reached my personal top 3. I still love the production, song structure and vocals. 17. If I Was Your Girlfriend (34): I had never heard this. It has an ok main chorus melody, but the verses are a bit underwhelming as is the production. I expected much more of this, and it ended being as disappointing as her Love Song duet with Madonna that I think this song served as inspiration. 16. Hey ladies (23): the more I heard it for this RD, the more I liked it. I remember hearing it before, but I had almost forgotten it. I The melody is quite catchy, and I like the production / sampling going on. Iâm not a big fan of their vocals, but I think they work for this type of song. 15. You came (10): I discovered this song when I bought her greatest hits cd in the late 90s âand this was one of my favorite discoveries. I still like it quite a bit, especially its sophistipop / synthpop elements, nostalgic melody, and heartfelt vocals. Good to see her this high. 14. Like the weather (37): I under ranked this discovery a lil bit. Iâm a fan of Natalieâs vocals and most of the 10k singles, but I found the melody of this song a bit weaker than what Iâm used to hearing from them, and some elements of the production a bit poppier than usual, but I got more hooked to it after submitting my list... 13. Better be home soon (22): Another song I heard first in the late 90s when I bought their hits CD. I like its very classic / Beatles sound and melody, and vocals, but not as much as those in my top 20. 12. Coming up close (9):actually, this was my favorite discovery (above Wet x3). I appreciate the emotions it invokes through an outstanding combination of lyrics, vocals (Aimeeâs warm tone is a highlight), instrumentals, and melody. Beautiful composition that IMO deserved a spot in the top 10. 11. Closer to Fine (29): another nice discovery. I really liked the vocal harmonies and main melody. Iâm not that big of a fan of this type of acoustic production especially for an 80s RD, but I donât mind seeing it this high. 10. Donât give up (5): I only heard this later in the 80s, and I found it haunting, poignant, powerful, including thanks to the great vocal performance of both Peter and Kate. Years later, itâd help me go through some tough times. 9. Pop song 89 (40): Iâm more of a 90s REM fan I actually didnât remember this song... I like the production but Iâm not a big fan of the slightly monotone melody. I preferred most of the other rock songs in this RD (incl Broken Land and Right next door). 8. Handle with care (4): my favorite song of this amazing supergroup. It was great to see Roy and George not only having hits on their own but also together with TW. A midsized hit in Peru and a personal top 10 that Iâve grown to like even more with time, with the classic GH sound and melancholic vibe, Royâs dramatic vocals, Jeffâs elegance, Tom and Bobâs more indie sound and vocals. 7. All I want is you (7): I discovered this song in the late 90s, and it was only then that entered my personal chart and reached the top spot. Itâs become my favorite song off R&H. Love the melody, dark production, rich instrumental (especially that riff) and strong vocals. Great to have it as a perfecto! 6. Forever young (3): Another song I discovered in the 90s, initially in its synthpop version, which I liked, and then in its ballad version, which I love and has become my second favorite of this group after BiJ. Great melody and especially vocals. A classic. 5. Thorn in my side (2): I was very close to have this as my #1 in this RD. I discovered this song when I bought their Greatest Hits Cd in the 90s, as the song wasnât played in pop stations. It was my favorite discovery from that album. I adore the melody and Annieâs vocals (including her layered vocals from beginning to end), the instrumentals (sax!) and the more pop-rock sound. It all worked perfectly. Itâs definitely in my top 5 Eurythmics songs. 4. Good life (24): another pretty good discovery in this RD, and a song that like SâExpress was very forward looking, introducing the sound that the likes of Black box and others would popularize in the early 90s. In the end, I liked SâExpress a bit more, but I shouldâve put this in my top 20. 3. Itâs tricky (35): actually the more I heard this song for this RD the less impressed I became. Especially when I realized that the main melody was completely borrowed from Toni Basilâs Mickey that was the nail in the coffin to rank it outside my top 30 and appreciate better the sampling that LL and Beasties did for their songs. 2. Never let me down again (6): Yes!!! One of my favorite 80s DM tunes, even when it wasnât played in our main pop stations back then (which overplayed New Day and Just canât get enough, followed by Everything counts). I love the darker sound, which makes it a unique song among 80s synthpop / new wave songs, and a great prelude to the 90s. Great representative of DMâs varied sound, as vocals and melody perfectly complement the sound. 1. Love comes quickly (8): PSB is one of my favorite artists ever, so seeing them once again atop makes me super happy! This song wasnât played in our pop stations, but PSB as Def Leppard (and Depeche Mode) would be at the center of some 30-minute specials in our #1 music tv channel, and thatâs where I discovered this one in the early 90s (just like I did with DMâs NLMDA). Great melody and instrumental, with that extra dosis of sophistication that makes listening to some of the PSB songs a very pleasant sonic experience. I remember whoring the Discography CD, which I bought soon after being released, and daydreaming to songs like this, jealousy, rent. Great winner!!! Thanks again for another great RD, that allowed me to discover several 80s gems. Really appreciate it!!!

2. Never let me down again (6): 1. Love comes quickly (6): Dang, why didn't rowell let me have two 6s lol Good catch! I switched DM and PSB at last minute practically. My sure top 5s were sting, eurythmics , Alphaville and Wilburys. Then I switched things around in my 5-10 block among u2, PSB, DM, Peter. And a couple of spots in my top 10 were tough fights that included Kim, a-ha, Bananarama, Def, Communards (their cover of NCSG is my favorite version... and if this had been DLMTW they wouldâve been in my top 5), and with Til Tuesday storming up in the end :)
