Yeah some of the complaints are silly when we think about the fact that radio stations would be unlikely to play the show without the extras because station playlists have gotten so restrictive in the last 10-20-30 years. I’d say if you have anything to complain about, complain about that. Even Ryan as host, as much as I don’t like his style, it’s likely because without those celebrity interviews and all the other non-chart stuff, people wouldn’t be as likely to listen to just a chart counted down. I much prefer Casey Kasem’s style but I also acknowledge that it was pretty dry. I liked it because I tuned into it. For someone casually listening to it, it probably wasn’t particularly entertaining. You are so right. The tastes of this society, today, are different than my taste. For me, order is very important. The reason I listen to AT40 is because I have to have a family of current music all the time. I am so accustomed to it that I can't give it up. Back in my day (1950s and 1960s) there always were stations that played only current music. Today, AT40 is the closest thing I know of to playing pure current music. No radio station does it anymore, or even comes close. But AT40 is gradually getting further and further away from playing just current music. Even half the songs in the countdown are too old to be considered (by me) as current music. Some of the extras are current, but the rest are oldies. And that is because this list is reflecting the fact that radio stations are playing mostly old music as if they were current. So, to me, AT40 is falling apart as a source of current music. |

...but Heather should of moved up Talk about odd chart runs. Counting the frozen weeks, "Heather" has, now, been stuck at #32 for 9 weeks. |

I agree with Fire, if you don't like the way things going on AT40, just STOP POSTING ON MY THREADS .... its just putting things down.... remember its nothing about Ryan, its mainly when Radio and Records disbanded in early 2k i assume, the crack staff of AT40 is using a variation of the MediaBase chart mixed with recurrents.... and its affiliates' playlist reflects on the AT40 chart, not the regular MediaBase chart ... and also the listeners now don't even know about LDD's ...so this is mainly a show for today's listeners.... just appreciate the guest hosts if you don't like Ryan

Even though I get annoyed by the amount of extras, I still enjoy the show. I'm a fan of music charts and I'm always excited to see what is on the chart every week. Hearing AT40 every week is always something good in life to look forward to. Love the show no matter what.

I deeply apologize that my comments offended you. I was complaining about the show, and in no way was this a reflection of your service to us. I very much extremely appreciate your effort to supply this chart for us. I hope you will not be angry at me for just giving an opinion. To me, you are the most important poster in all of Pulse Music Board. Your chart is very important to me. I want to make you feel good about what you are doing for us, and me. Again, I apologize for offending you. I had no way of knowing that you would be offended.
I also want to apologize to Fire, that I upset him. At first I thought I was agreeing with Fire. But I didn't realize he saw it a different way. Believe me, primarily, I am not here to complain, and sometimes I have put in helpful comments. That's what I am primarily here to do.

thoughts for week
1. glad to have the regular countdown back i find the year end countdown uninspiring now. I miss the old 100-51 on week one and 50-1 on week 2 rather than a repeat countdown. They should at least do top 50. In addition half the songs on the year end countdown are songs from the previous year.
2. "Save your tears" sounds like the 80's group o.m.d to me
3. Nice to see "all time low" possibly hitting the top 40 rock songs are practically extinct on today's countdown
4. i would have been happy to hear a 19th extra this week in lieu of an interview about a home game of dungeons and dragons. Just saying.
5. The year starts out with 2 hours and 5 minutes worth of the actual top 40 hits based on i tunes. Wouldn't be shocked if we break the 2 hour mark this year.

it's alright, lol, you didn't upset me, if anything i feel that i came off as too aggressive in my post. i just felt that lately almost every time i go into at40 threads i just see one complaint about "too many extras" or "ryan isn't hosting correctly" (not specifically from you, from other posters as well) and i just kinda needed to vent some frustration that some of these complaints i just find ridiculous. i'm just glad that everyone here still comes to this thread out of enjoyment for the show in the end~ :) |

Sorry if this has been brought up a hundred times, but is the AT40 chart NOT the published Mediabase CHR chart? Is it a mixture with Hot AC? If so, when did this start? Thanks

It is based on a survey of only what the radio stations that carry the AT40 show are playing. Mediabase surveys many more radio stations. I would guess that it is not mixed with Hot AC. Playing extra's is just part of radio, always has been. The CHR formula has always been relatively the same, play your 'power songs' every 90s mins (power songs r the top 5'ish most requested) becuz ppl want to tune in an hear their fav song an not wait long to hear it. Mix in a few recurrents an few golds per hour (but never back to back) an maintain a tight playlist of around 30 songs, no more (outside of golds an recurrents). There's a few more rules to it, do's an dont's, no reason to go into great detail here, main point is xtra's are part of CHR radio an thus part of AT40. As to whether a chart show should contain so many extra's?? well the alternative would be slim the show down to 3 hours?? An even that im not sure you could squeeze 40 songs an commericals into 3 hours, thus we're left w/ 4 hour show. 18 extras? yeah then maybe you actually could trim the show down to 3 hours. Would you rather have AT40 do what they used to do? an fill time w/ talk talk talk talking w/ celebs or artists? An didn't they used to do AT40 sleaze or something? so if its not extras filling the space, its something else. I think the show format has definitely improved from all the banter an yacking they used to do. At least now its more music oriented instead of in the past, the music was almost an after thought. "We'll get back to talking to 'insert artist/celeb name' after we play number 18 this week" And now on with the countdown, I recorded this weeks show thinking that Ryan would be taking a holiday?!?!?! Isnt the 1st show of the year usually guest hosted?? I found it odd that it wasn't. Rick Dees best known for his sleaze segments .... not Ryan and definitely not Casey or Shadoe Ryan took more time off last year than previous years i believe....
