Take my opinion however you want it, but I fail to see why this track and Disney-borne singer have seen this much acclaim. Who thinks it’s clever to build a song around a metaphor as sedate as a driver’s license? It’s like writing about lost love using a folder as a metaphor. Furthermore, just because this song has a crescendo doesn’t mean it’s epic—it just swells. This is a turgid, mawkish record.
The only decent aspect of this song is her voice, which admittedly has layers. Everything else, however, is a juvenile take on a piano ballad. The whole song plays like a trite Lorde song: It has less imagination, less creativity, and it has the lyrical depth—or lack thereof—of early Taylor Swift.

I’d say it’s a clever song because getting a driver’s licence is a big step for everyone at that age and it represents freedom and, in this case, a way to reach/access a relationship much easier, only what was planned didn’t work out because the relationship ended before the licence was attained. It’s not particularly elegant but she did a great job capturing it into a story. She was also presumably 17 when she wrote it so, the ease of criticizing her without giving it context. Only very few of us are ever granted the ability to use “turgid” and “mawkish” in a sentence.

I think this is a teen song for teens. I can't get through this at all, but I'm not a teen for a long time now, so it's not for me.

Only very few of us are ever granted the ability to use “turgid” and “mawkish” in a sentence. Ah yes, context. Well, the context surrounding this song and Olivia doesn’t make the song itself any better. Its context actually lends itself well to my criticism. Her being 17 definitely explains why this seems to have been written by a glum, humorless teenager. I’ve heard better from other teenagers. I think this is a teen song for teens. I can't get through this at all, but I'm not a teen for a long time now, so it's not for me. I agree with you. This is indeed a teen song—juvenile angst and all. It’s as predictably slight as something that one might expect from a typical 17-year-old who dabbles with a pen when he/she is sad. This would be an appropriate soundtrack to a Disney teen show’s hammy break-up scene. I am clearly not the target audience for this either. However, hearing this and knowing that it’s number one just makes me wish that the vastly superior singer-songwriter Lorde was active again. I’ll wait till then.

I’m a teen who likes Lorde and Taylor, but I have never liked this at all. It’s got generic melodies, with generic lyrics, though the bridge is decent enough. The appeal is that it’s “relatable” and “sad” but if this is either of those things then there are hundreds of other songs that do those better.
That said, I don’t dislike Olivia, and I actually enjoy All I Want for its more interesting and powerful chorus. And if the rumors are true that her next single is Cruel Summer-esque, then I might just like her.

I expected this to be way more dominant at radio. This probably won’t even be in the CHR top ten a month from now.

It will eventually slow down it's descent. There's a new single and it was at the top spot for 5 weeks so I don't think radio could have kept it much longer on power rotation before audiences completely burned on it.

I expected this to be way more dominant at radio. This probably won’t even be in the CHR top ten a month from now. Same. I expected it to run at #1 for 8 weeks I think I said a few months back. It’s weird to see a song already fall out of the top less than three months after entering the chart itself when it takes most songs longer than that to even reach the top ten.

Went recurrent this week on Hot 100 after 28 weeks. The best selling song of the year in the US and expected to be the best selling song of the year worldwide in IFPI's year-end list
