Nice to see someone unknown (to the general public, at least) have such a breakout out of nowhere...
Maybe I'm not the target for this song cause it did absolutely nothing for me (lol)... It's a bit boring and it lacks a bit of, I don't know, personality? She sounds great on it though!

This song is absolutely fantastic, I really loved the bridge of the song, gives off Lorde vibes and the lyricism comes off from her "mom" Taylor Swift. I'm also glad to see that someone new to the music industry gets her debut single be an organic hit, so totally well deserved!
And the idea of a Filipino get a #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 (Olivia's father side was of Filipino descent) was truly incredible and proud! 🇵🇭🙌

I really like this! If anything, this song's performance thus far is going to make me pissed if Lorde doesn't get the same reaction tbh.

I was actually thinking that I think this reaction means great things for Lorde’s comeback. I’m gunna knock on wood but seems like a lot of the people listening to this also listen to Lorde.

Would she be the first female artist of Filipino descent to go to #01? I know Bruno Mars is half Filipino, but I'm curious if she would be the first artist to achieve that as a female

Yep, she may be the first Filipina to achieve #1 status at the Billboard Hot 100, but second over-all after Bruno Mars, who happens to also have Filipino descent.

She doesn’t even look Filipino at all, she looks like a white hispanic or an ethnic looking white girl who tans like Ariana.
Let’s be real if she actually did look Filipino she would not be getting this success, same goes for Bruno and Enrique Iglesias. It’s like using Halsey and Logic as an example of black people succeeding aka ridiculous when most people see them as white.
Anyway, the song is bland as hell and sounds like a Lorde knockoff without the talent. I don’t get why this is doing so well at all but impressive that she’s doing so well out of nowhere.

Unlike Bruno Mars and Olivia Rodrigo that both have parents with Filipino descents, Enrique Iglesias' parent (being his mother) was a Filipina herself.

Wait HOW is this blowing up? The song is obviously great, but do people just like the song that much? Or does this girl already have a huge following?

Wait HOW is this blowing up? The song is obviously great, but do people just like the song that much? Or does this girl already have a huge following? As a Disney alum who previously charted with “All I Want” [#90] and has been on High School Musical & Bizaardvark, she’d already established herself with the 13/14-and-unders. The TikTok success of “All I Want” familiarized high schoolers & young adults with her. At this point, she has an established fanbase but is unknown to older people. Recently, a tabloid story about her, Joshua Bassett (another new Disney alum) and Sabrina Carpenter began, intriguing fans of all 3 celebrities. The proximity between the announcements of “driver’s license” and ex Bassett’s own next single “Lie Lie Lie” further stoked the fires of drama. All this buzz resulted in a solid streaming & sales debut fueled by mostly under-18s that shocked those not familiar with Rodrigo or the drama surrounding her. Curious, they then took a listen, boosting the track’s numbers further. More articles come out about Taylor Swift complimenting her & cheering her on and about the older blonde referenced in the lyrics (speculated to be Sabrina Carpenter) which boosted it once more. People read those articles and then checked out the song. It’s a snowball effect. All these factors + the currently weak sales/streaming climate resulted in her dominance.

No it's only a website now. There are other tween fan magazines around similar to it though. Walgreens even carries a BTS fanzine lol.

I have no idea who this is, no idea it was coming, and am still extremely confused on how this blew up immediately out of the gate. No other Disney star had their debut just explode like this immediately upon release. (On the contrary, most of them are outright flops.)
Haven't heard this yet, but it is exciting to see something left field storming up the charts rather than the latest TikTok trend or A-list release.

She’s on a massive Disney+ original TV show and from what I understand was romantically linked to her lead co-star in real life. She definitely didn’t come from out of nowhere, lol, BUT the enormity of this song is certainly a pleasant shock.
It really is excellent. That bridge! Go off, girl. She deserves.

I feel like all the Lorde/Billie Eilish comparisons are a bit overblown but this is a solid debut single. Sound wise it's more similar to Lorde than Billie Eilish but I think Lorde had more complex lyrics than this one just from "Royals" alone - the songwriting here reminds me more of earlier Taylor Swift than Lorde.
Her dominance right now is insane though, good for her - I'm always here for more Asian representation in music!
