This deserves an asterisk since JT helped a lot. Would it have been a hit if it was a solo single? I don't ask that as a criticism of Madonna, but of Top 40 radio. Madonna had a hit in her 40s with "Music," though, so you don't need "4 Minutes" for her to fit your topic question. And where did "Hung Up" peak at Pop?

^"4 Minutes" was from her album, so she wasn't riding hype for a JT album or anything- though I get what you're saying. Pitbull didn't hurt the success of "On the Floor," either.
RE the "Music" note- "Don't Tell Me" and "Die Another Day" were also top 5s at top 40 radio.
Someone like Sia- yeah, she was in her '40s, but it took her so long to hit the mainstream, so it was kinda like she was a "new" artist when she started scoring mainstream hits.
Cher was in her 40s with the Cher and Heart of Stone eras- though like some other females who scored hits in their 40s and beyond back then, the climate was less ageist than what it became.

I didn't say she was riding hype for a JT album, but surely his presence helped the song get more airplay than it would have otherwise. For as well as "Hung Up" did, it didn't get make the top 10 at Top 40 radio. The other singles from COADF flopped in the U.S. "4S" was then a hit, but then her other singles from the album flopped. So, the outlier is the song with JT. That isn't a knock on Madonna, it's a knock on Top 40 for needing JT on a song to play it.

For sure- that's the USA for ya. The steady top 10s kept coming in the UK/globally through "Celebration," though by then she was past 50- and at a certain point, other countries follow suit, at least those that play more current acts. In the UK, Radio 2 is an outlet for older acts- "Ghosttown" and "Medellin" cracked the top 20 on the UK Airplay chart, for instance, while pulling far less impressive numbers on the main singles chart.

Mariah’s birthdate is disputed as either 1969 or 1970. If she was born in 1969, then she was 40 when “Obsessed” went top 10.

Regardless I think the 2x platinum "#Beautiful" was a big enough hit she could be grouped in here, though she had an assist from Miguel (though he's never been a Top 40 draw so I'm not sure his presence made a difference).

Beyoncé had a # 1 hit with “Break My Soul” last summer so she should be mentioned and she has been in the game since the late 90’s and Early 2000’s.
