Released in the summer of 1987, this duet was the first of 5 #1s on both the Hot 100 and soul charts from the Bad album. Siedah Garrett was chosen to be MJ's singing partner at the last minute after both Barbra Streisand and Whitney Houston declined to participate. It topped the AC charts as well as the charts in Britain, Ireland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, and Zimbabwe.

MJ would perform this on the Bad tour with his background singer who would go on to have a career in her own right, Sheryl Crow.

The early pressings of the Bad album include a spoken word intro by Michael.
