Very interesting to see that Mark Ronson hopped onto a re-version of this song, Now I'm actually curious to know if this song could crossover into other radio formats. Knowing that the Foo Fighters had successfully crossed over before of course does have me wondering if this song has that kind of potential.

A gentle reminder that Mark Ronson also produced "The Way You Used to Do" by Queens of the Stone Age. That song didn't crossover.
Though I did hear a bit of the new version and yeah it's poppier.

The Mark Ronson edit is kind of awesome and uh, weirdly enough, reminds me of something Harry Styles might do.

The Mark Ronson mix has been put under Alternative Cool New Music, put in the regular version's folder. I suspect this is the Foos' attempt at making an Audacy-friendly version of one of their singles considering AAA has not received this mix.

Funny, because to me this sounds better suited to AAA than Alternative. Then again I felt the same way about Black Pumas.

Funny, because to me this sounds better suited to AAA than Alternative. Then again I felt the same way about Black Pumas. That was rectified sometime before this evening as they serviced the Mark Ronson remix to AAA too.

That Mark Ronson version strips the harder edge Rock vibe of the original. Not a fan.

Remember when I said this? I should also mention that WFUV is the exact opposite of WNYL/KINK/WXRV whatever in that they mostly try to avoid songs on the alt chart, though not to the extent that WXPN does. (Unless the artist has been established on AAA like The Killers or Gorillaz, or started there like The Revivalists, Bakar or Michigander) WFUV doesn't even play the Foos that much. Well, guess what? I have a feeling they added this song today. Not sure if it's the remix, but I caught this played around midnight on their playlist. I think their recent PD change (after the passing of Rita Houston) might have to do with this, because they also added Heat Waves and Vertigo the first week when he was in charge, and they're also starring to play stuff such as Sofia and Therefore I Am which they did not add during their time as currents. They still aren't going all the way on the alt stuff like Imagine Dragons and twenty one pilots, but that's expected.

This song is the best song they've released to radio so far from the new album.

I love this song and was hoping it would be single #3. "Medicine at Midnight" is solid throughout...easily my favorite FF album since 2011's "Wasting Light".

WTTS is playing the Mark Ronson version; I wish there was a way to see who was playing which one.

So "Making A Fire" has (deservedly, IMO) made a strong (Top 5) impact on AAA and Active (edit: almost there on Active!) and appears poised for a Top 10 showing (at least) at Alternative, which is impressive, considering it appeared to have maxed out spins-wise in the 20s a handful of weeks back. Hopefully, it continues to leave a mark on all the formats. How about FF in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?! I've been impressed at the Foos' ability to handle each format with relative ease - which can be quite, well impossible I think at any given point in history.
Question is where do we stand on fourth single options. Cage The Elephant and Twenty One Pilots have clearly set the standard of going 4-deep in recent years so the Foos need to prove their worth, again.
Cloudspotter - would fit all three formats but too much like "Making A Fire." Pass.
Medicine At Midnight - too left field for AAA and Active. Would fit on Alt but might not get higher than 20s. Bookmark.
No Son Of Mine - already a teaser release? Would fit on Active. Bookmark.
Holding Poison - good but not great option for all three formats. Reminds me of a catchier but similarly repetitive "Low." Would see it maxizing around on lower part of each chart. Pass for now.
Chasing Birds - AAA only release. Pass (for me).
Love Dies Young. Chorus is merely decent but refrain/guitar is excellent. Could the refrain/guitar carry the song? I genuinely don't know. Last tracks on albums don't generally make good single choices but this would do strongly on AAA and Alt
I guess I would go with "Love Dies Young" and if that isn't the choice, I'd go with the trifecta of "No Son of Mine" (for Active), "Medicine At Midnight" (for Alt) and "Chasing Birds" (for AAA).

Love the Foos, but this and "No Son Of Mine" are the only songs on the new album that I really like. The rest was so disappointing. :(

FF hit #1 on active and AAA 20 on the 20 year mark of the infamous Clear Channel banned records list. Of which Learn to Fly was a charter member of the club. Along with John Lennon “imagine”. Making a Fire almost surely would be on such a list today. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_Channel_memorandum#List_of_songs

They will be denied the Billboard AAA #1 for a third time because they failed to pass "Hush" and Nathaniel Rateliff passed them.

Damn the Foo Fighters have really bad luck on the Billboard AAA Chart, "Shame Shame" and "Waiting On A War" both got blocked by 2 different songs from going to #1 there and this song just got blocked by 3 different songs from the Top 2 there..

The Foos have the same problem on AAA that they do on Alt; albeit on a smaller scale and with less coordination than the Audacy-led effort to kick them from Alt. A number of mostly noncommercial AAA programmers do not like the Foos or feel they don't fit the format. The Mediabase AAA panel; which leans commercial, is unaffected by this, but Billboard carries a ton of noncommercials that MB doesn't. Personally, I feel that good music is good music regardless of the source and the Foos bring it album after album. I would play the Foos if I ran a noncommercial especially as they are likely a great way to draw listeners in. But others don't feel that way. So it goes.

To further expand on this: Of the several non-commercials Billboard has, they have at least four indie-based noncommercials - KVOQ, KTBG, WYMS and the new WNXP. Those stations focus more on indie and R&B/rap and a few of these, WNXP in particular, on newer artists. None of the four added this, though KVOQ and KTBG have added the previous two Foo Fighters singles. Besides most older artists, they (except KTBG) also don't tend to dabble into the Americana/folk stuff as much as the likes of KJAC and WCLY on BB and MB respectively - neither of those two added this too. For this reason, only KTBG of those four has added the new Robert Plant and Alison Krauss collab. At least seven non-commercials (three are on Mediabase) added this, but almost every non-comm has added "Hush" and "Survivor". Additionally, Billboard has several commercials that Mediabase does not have, most notably KVYN, who plays currents to abnormal levels (over 50 plays per week for some). KVYN has continued to play Hush, and to my knowledge they either dropped or lower this. Those helped out songs such as "I Need Some of That" and "Move" which are doing better on Billboard as well. Because Sirius Spectrum has a bigger influence on Mediabase, that put "Hush" also on a loss on Mediabase. WCLY has also refused to add "Hush" because of their Americana/folk-based playlist, and KYMK has yet to max "Hush" unlike this song. So the combination of all these three (more so for the former) put Foo Fighters at a loss compared to "Hush" and "Survivor".
