Morgan Wallen's 'Dangerous' Hits Eighth Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart 3/7/2021 by Keith Caulfieldwww.billboard.com/articles/news/9536197/morgan-wallen-dangerous-tops-billboard-200-eight-weeksMorgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album continues to rule the Billboard 200 chart for an eighth week, all consecutively, after having bowed atop the tally seven weeks ago (chart dated Jan. 23). Dangerous is now one of only six country albums that have spent at least eight weeks in total at No. 1. Dangerous earned 82,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending March 4 (down 7%), according to MRC Data. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new March 13, 2021-dated chart (where Dangerous is No. 1 for an eighth week) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on March 9. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Dangerous’ 82,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending Feb. 25, SEA units comprise 75,000 (down 7%, equaling 103.33 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs), album sales comprise 6,000 (down 4%) and TEA units comprise 1,000 (down 13%). Dangerous now ties Taylor Swift’s 2020 album Folklore for the second-most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the last five years -- among albums of all genres. Each has tallied eight weeks at No. 1. Drake’s Views has the most weeks at No. 1 in the last five years, with 13 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 (all in 2016). Dangerous continues to move up the list of country albums with the most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, since the chart began publishing on a regular weekly basis in March of 1956. (Country albums are defined as those that have charted on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.) Dangerous is also the only country set to spend its first eight weeks on the chart at No. 1. Country Albums With Most Weeks at No. 1 on Billboard 200: Artist, Title, Weeks at No. 1 (Year) Garth Brooks, Ropin’ the Wind, 18 (1991-92) Billy Ray Cyrus, Some Gave All, 17 (1992) Taylor Swift, Fearless, 11 (2008-09) Garth Brooks, The Hits, eight (1995) Eagles, Hotel California, eight (1977) Morgan Wallen, Dangerous: The Double Album, eight to-date (2021) For the third week in a row, no albums debut in the top 10 on the Billboard 200. The chart last housed top 10 arrivals on the Feb. 20-dated list, when Foo Fighters’ Medicine at Midnight and Pooh Shiesty’s Sheisty Season debuted at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. The last time the chart went without top 10 debuts for three straight weeks in January of 2019 on the Jan. 12, 19 and 26-dated charts (thanks to a quiet post-Christmas release schedule). The last time the top 10 was absent of debuts for three weeks in a row outside of the post-Christmas period was on the charts dated Dec. 16, 23 and 30, 2000 (when the chart ranked titles only by album sales, before it transitioned to a multi-metric consumption ranking in December 2014). In 2000, the only album released after Thanksgiving (Nov. 23) to bow in the top 10 was Snoop Dogg’s Tha Last Meal, which was released on Dec. 19 and debuted at No. 9 on the Jan. 6, 2001-dated chart. Back on the new Billboard 200, The Weeknd’s compilation album The Highlights rises 12-2, matching its peak, with 52,000 equivalent album units earned (up 96%). The set includes many of the artist’s best-known hits, including “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears” -- both of which are also on his last studio album, 2020’s After Hours. On the latest chart, the TEA and SEA units for both songs contribute to The Highlights, as a song’s activity is assigned to the artist’s album with the most sales in a week. (The Highlights sold 3,000 copies in the latest tracking week, while After Hours sold 2,000.) A week ago, the TEA and SEA for both songs were directed to After Hours (which in that frame outsold The Highlights 3,000 to 2,000). In turn, with the songs’ activity moving to The Highlights, the After Hours album moves 6-163. Pop Smoke’s former No. 1 Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon is a non-mover at No. 3 with 42,000 (down 1%), Pooh Sheisty’s Sheisty Season climbs 5-4 with 36,000 (down 4%) and Lil Durk’s The Voice dips 4-5 with 36,000 (down 7%). A pair of former No. 1s are next, as Ariana Grande’s Positions falls 2-6 with 32,000 units (down 34%) and Lil Baby My Turn rises 10-7 with 30,000 units (up 4%). Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia is steady at No. 8 with 29,000 units (down 2%), Luke Combs’ former chart-topper What You See Is What You Get is stationary at No. 9 with 28,000 units (down 2%) and Juice WRLD’s former leader Legends Never Die is up 11-10 with 27,000 units (down 2%).

Why did The Highlights suddenly get a boost and After Hours fell? It's a little messy, The Highlights is kinda pointless, especially seeing as there isn't any original material on there.
Also great hold for Dua!

^It's 3,000 in sales for Highlights vs. 2,000 in sales for AH. It's so close.

After Hours went 6-163 💀 This is looking like a rollercoaster. I made a thread about the longest-charting acts on the Billboard 200 and in it, I remarked about this very thing. I've updated the OP through this week's chart. Some observations: - 2Pac reaches 900 charted weeks. - The Weeknd surpasses 800 charted weeks. - Hall & Oates (787 weeks) surpasses Beyoncè (786 weeks). Kendrick Lamar (786 weeks) and Rascal Flatts (783 weeks) are the next in line to surpass Beyoncè. Interestingly, Justin Bieber has no albums charting currently despite his last album being released just over a year ago. The only Adele album currently charting is 21 (released in 2011) and not 25, which was released more recently. Same thing with Born to Die (released in 2012) being the only Lana Del Rey album charting despite her having many more recent albums. Bruno Mars also has Doo-Wops and Hooligans (released in 2010) as his only album charting and not any of his more recent albums. Goes to show that fans will only continue to consume their favorite albums long-term and that it isn't easy charting on the Billboard 200 for an extended period of time. I also noticed that following the release of the Weeknd's greatest hits album, Beauty Behind the Madness has fallen off the Billboard 200. After Hours, the Highlights and Starboy are the 3 albums he has charting now and with Starboy dropping 84 positions in the last 2 weeks (it went from #103 three weeks ago, to #125 last week to #187 this week), it may not be charting on next week's chart. A consequence of him having a greatest hits album now is that his older albums will suffer as a result.

Willie Nelson may complete the longest route to his first #1 on Top Album Sales. A span of 58 years between his debut album and That’s Life. His previous high? Always On My Mind peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 in 1982.
This incorporates Billboard 200 data prior to the Nielsen switch, as the charts had been on sales reports.

^Although since Top Album Sales does use the same methodology as Billboard 200 used to use, but isn't the same chart, Billboard wouldn't count it as a record.

The Weeknd might have had a chance to have hit #1 in the past few weeks if the Highlights album was not released.

As a huge country fan I hate to see it because he’s gonna have more weeks than albums and artists that are better/not racist.

Billboard 200 and Hot 100 Charts Having the Same No. 1s For Eight Simultaneous Weeks By Andrew Unterberger 3/9/2021 Click to copy www.billboard.com/articles/business/chart-beat/9536636/billboard-200-hot-100-same-number-ones/Olivia Rodrigo's "Drivers License" and Morgan Wallen's 'Dangerous: The Double Album' have reigned on Billboard's marquee songs and albums charts for the last eight frames -- the first time in over 20 years both listings have seen simultaneous reigns this long. On Jan. 17, Billboard announced that the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated Jan. 23 was Morgan Wallen's Dangerous: The Double Album. The next day, Billboard revealed that Olivia Rodrigo's "Drivers License" had debuted at No. 1 on the same week's Billboard Hot 100. And ever since then, it's been Wallen and Rodrigo alone sitting atop Billboard's marquee albums and songs charts. The latest charts, dated March 13, marks the eighth consecutive frame that both Dangerous and "Drivers License" reign on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100, respectively. That eighth simultaneous week now makes it the longest consecutive joint rule of the two charts in the last 20 years. The pair passes the seven straight weeks that Drake notched in 2016 with both the No. 1 album (Views) and No. 1 single ("One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla). The rapper's seven-week dual rule was then interrupted for one week, as Views was temporarily replaced atop the Billboard 200 by Blink 182's California, before resuming for one more non-consecutive week -- making it eight weeks total for the duo spent simultaneously at No. 1. (Views ultimately spent 13 non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200, while "One Dance" ruled the Hot 100 for 10 combined frames.) The last album/song combination to notch eight consecutive simultaneous weeks atop the Billboard 200 and Hot 100? You have to go back to spring 2000 for that, when boy band *NSYNC's blockbuster sophomore LP No Strings Attached debuted atop the Billboard 200 with record-breaking sales numbers on the chart dated April 8 -- while on the Hot 100, classic rock outfit Santana began its second straight double-digit-week run at pole position, thanks to its second Supernatural smash, "Maria Maria," featuring the Product G&B. "Maria Maria" lasted 10 straight weeks at No. 1, but No Strings Attached tapped out after eight frames, replaced on top by another TRL-era best-seller in Britney Spears' Oops!....I Did It Again. Before *NSYNC and Santana, there were three consecutive joint runs of at least eight weeks that happened in the '90s -- when double-digit-weeks reigns on both charts were more common on the whole than thus far in the 20th century. In 1997, the eight-week run of So-Cal alt-rockers No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom coincided with eight of soul great Toni Braxton's 11 straight weeks atop the Hot 100 with her megaballad "Un-Break My Heart." In 1992, the final eight weeks of country star Billy Ray Cyrus' staggering 17-week reign atop the Billboard 200 with Some Gave All coincided with the first eight weeks (of a then-record 13-week run) at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for R&B quartet Boyz II Men's torch song "End of the Road." And in between the two examples, legendary diva Whitney Houston pulled double duty atop the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 for a record 12 straight weeks in 1993 -- with her Diamond-certified soundtrack to The Bodyguard, and its lead single, a towering cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You." (The Bodyguard would reign for 13 weeks total, while "Always" ultimately spent 14 weeks at No. 1, breaking the record Boyz II Men set the year before.) Prior to the '90s, there were just two examples of consecutive joint eight-week runs atop the Hot 100 and Billboard 200, dating back to the 1963 merging of Billboard's stereo and mono charts into one all-encompassing albums chart -- both occurring in the late '70s. In 1977, two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers combined for the feat, as Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)" overlapped at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for eight straight weeks with Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, which ultimately spent 14 total weeks atop the Billboard 200. Then a year later, the Bee Gees' disco-era dominance was reflected in the simultaneous rule of their eight-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Night Fever," and the 24-consecutive-week run atop the Billboard 200 of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, a various artists set that featured "Night Fever" and several other Bee Gees smashes. In addition to Drake's interrupted eight-week joint rule with Views and "One Dance," there has been one other example in the past decade of an album and single ruling the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 for eight weeks simultaneously, but not consecutively. Pharrell's effervescent "Happy" spent its first week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2014 alongside Disney's best-selling Frozen soundtrack atop the Billboard 200, but then the latter fell off for two weeks (as rappers ScHoolboy Q and Rick Ross took turns at No. 1 with their Oxymoron and Mastermind sets, respectively), before rejoining "Happy" for another seven weeks on top. ("Happy" ultimately spent 10 total weeks at No. 1, while the Frozen soundtrack reigned for 13 non-consecutive weeks.) There aren't a ton of obvious common historical elements linking the now-seven examples of simultaneous eight-week consecutive runs atop the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 -- though it's perhaps worth noting that five of the seven came predominantly in the first four months of the calendar year, when release schedules are often a little slower. That's certainly helped Dangerous with its run so far this year, as only one album (The Weeknd's The Highlights collection) has even hit a new peak of No. 2 during the eight weeks Dangerous has spent at No. 1 -- and has also helped "Drivers License," which for the most part has only had to fend off strong pushes from a new Cardi B release ("Up") and a remix-boosted Ariana Grande single ("34+35," featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat on its redo). However, that's likely to change this upcoming week. Big-ticket full-length releases are still sparse, but new singles from Justin Bieber ("Hold On") and the Silk Sonic superduo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak ("Leave the Door Open"), and a whopping three-song pack from Drake ("What's Next," the Lil Baby-featuring "Wants and Needs" and the Rick Ross-featuring "Lemon Pepper Freestyle") should make it the most competitive frame for "Drivers License" atop the Hot 100 since it debuted there eight weeks prior. We'll see next week whether it whether its run will be halted at eight weeks -- or if it and Dangerous can both hang on for one more week, and join Whitney's Bodyguard/"I Will Always Love You" duo as the only nine-plus-week joint consecutive runs atop the two charts in Billboard history. Additional research for this story was provided by Gary Trust.
