"Jealous" is definitely in the mold of what I always adore. Something about the execution wasn't quite top-tier level for me, but still very good. On the opposite side, I liked "Rare Changes" a lot more than I expected, definitely has that earworm factor. This is probably the closest matchup I've had to vote in thus far, so don't be shocked if I end up switching my vote halfway through.

Brett Eldredge is growing on me. I liked this. Felt passionate, emotional and genuine, but not overly dramatic. "Need Someone" was uptempo, but I'm getting a little bored of those poppy nu-disco songs, as much as I loved them at first due to being innovative at the time. I don't like Zara Larsson as a singer either, but this was probably one of the best things I've heard from her vocally.

I didn't expect to vote for "るるちゃんの自殺配信", but here I am. Definitely not what I typically listen to, but... that was a pretty solid earworm, lol. "ATM" was fine, but didn't really move me in any way. The chorus was fun, though.

I just didn't care for "Till Forever Falls Apart". Without being awful, it was kinda corny thematically. "I See You Sometimes" was much more interesting, from its bouncy beat to its somewhat detached vocals, and progressed in a really interesting way.

I wish I liked Julien Baker more than I actually do, but this was probably my favourite Baker song out of all the ones I've heard. While I love the instrumentation, the vocals never seem to blend seamlessly with me, to the point where I only "liked" this, though I liked it a fair bit. "Cavalry Court" suffers kind of the same fate for me: great instrumentation, but the vocals don't blend that well with the rest of the track. Overall, I enjoyed "Favor" more.

I liked the dreamy vocals in "Aftertouch" and I liked the future house influences here and there. The first drop was kinda predictable and cliché, but thankfully the rest of the instrumental was solid. "Law 'n' Order"... k, I love Law and Order, and I was NOT expecting the title theme to be used as a sample, lol. It was definitely interesting, but I thought it'd leave a stronger impact on me. Perhaps because it's barely 2 minutes long?

"Stuck In The Middle Pt. II" was... fine? It didn't leave much of an impact, for the better of the worse. The beat on "Headboard" was pretty hypnotic, almost... shoegaze-like? Real intriguing song, and one I'll probably revisit in the near future.

I loved House of Harm's EP from a couple years ago, so I was pleasantly surprised to see them on this list. This was probably even better than anything I've heard from their EP and one of the best songs I've heard in the whole tournament so far; definitely my cup of tea, a real banger. I appreciated the sentiment behind "Feeling Things", though the execution came out a little... bland? The verses felt like filler compared to the much more interesting hook.

Finneas has a great ear for production, and this complements Ashe's voice so nicely. Like the orchestral pop sound (with the slightest hint of slide guitar). The Vegyn track had a cool vibe, but I kept wanting something more in the development of the song and melody.

- "Jealous" was alright. I'm not sure how I feel about chillwave as a whole, but this didn't have too much of an effect on me. "Rare Changes" is an absolute bop. I love Mayer Hawthorne, but it had been a bit since I really liked a song from him, then he released this. One thing I noticed, however, is that the version in the playlist is different than the mix I've been listening to. I guess the album version and single version are different from one another, but the single version isn't on Spotify, so whatever, lol. The mixing is a lot more clear on this album version, but it still sounds weird to me lmao. 

Brett Eldredge - “Sunday Drive” (Samo, #1) vs. Zara Larsson - “Need Someone” (Cynthia, #6)

- I'll be honest, I think this might be the most out there #1 choice I've seen because it's a country song coming from Samo lmao. This was really nice though! I'm normally a fan of Brett's songs, but I never really get super into them. This kinda feels like one of those cases, but it's another quality song from him. I've really liked Zara's output this whole era (is "All the Time" in this one?), and this is another banger from her. Definitely someone I should check more into. I'm gonna go with Zara here, but Brett's song was great as well. 

Shinsei Kamattechan - “るるちゃんの自殺配信” (cf72, #1) vs. Bree Runway f/ Missy Elliott - “ATM” (BB, #6)

- I was not a fan of this one. Shinsei's vocals were not really great to me, and this song sounded like The Fairly Oddparents in Japanese lmao. I don't think "ATM" is really for me either, but I think I felt more grabbed by it. 

Ashe & Finneas - “Till Forever Falls Apart” (Keatonzab, #1) vs. Vegyn f/ Jeshi - “I See You Sometimes” (peacebone, #6)

- I expected a lot worse out of an Ashe & FINNEAS collaboration, but this is just super boring. I don't think their voices go well together at all either. Ashe doesn't sound bad on this, but FINNEAS singing with her is not good, lol. Give this song to a different male artist, and I think I'd like it a bit more, but it is a bit generic in general so meh all around. "I See You Sometimes" was super cool. Loved the vibe going on even if the vocal style tends not to be my flavor, but it worked behind the production here. Cool song.

- lmao I didn't realize we were getting 100% of the Julien Baker songs this round. She reminds me a lot of Phoebe Bridgers, so it makes sense why Pulse is loving her. This was another solid one from her, and it keeps right on track with good songs this tournament from her. This makes a lot of sense that Craig is the lead singer of The Hold Steady – very recognizable voice from the jump. "Calvary Court" was alright. It didn't really make much of an impression on me honestly. Not bad, but not really memorable to me. 

SJ & Tasji - “Aftertouch” (Fire, #1) vs. Veeze - “Law ‘n’ Order” (jtd, #6)

- "Aftertouch" was pretty nice. It had a super chill vibe to it, and I really dug the production and her vocal over the track. Really solid track. I didn't care too much for "Law 'n' Order". I like the sample it uses, but the rap leaves a lot to be desired. "Syrup" quality without everything that makes it good, lol.

- I think I like this remix more than the original. Kiana gives this a bit more flavor. I like this a decent bit. Okay, so I was not expecting this vocal on "Headboard" lmao. This was really solid, and something I wasn't expecting to even like just by judging by the artist name, lol. Nice little surprise. 

House Of Harm - “Vicious Pastimes” (wheatsquares33, #1) vs. Ingrid Andress - “Feeling Things” (bboat11, #6)

- "Vicious Pastimes" is sure a wheat pick... and what I mean by that is that this is great. I always love this kind of music that wheat sends and they're great discoveries and this was no different. Really nice song. The Ingrid Andress song was nice, but not really interesting to me. Kind of nothing I'd ever care to listen to again, but if it came on I wouldn't mind.

- Ooo “Jealous” is a jam! I like the somewhat “dark” vibe of it, definitely going to return to this. “Rare Changes” has a really nice groove to it. Definitely a nice pop/soul song. I like both of these, though I think at this current moment “Jealous” stuck with me just a bit more.

- Ok so, I fell in love with “Paris Illinois” after I listened to it for WTM. Honestly “Sunday Drive” has a similar vibe to it so this is definitely a great listen for me. Really love Brett’s voice, and just the overall sound of the song. I listened to Zara’s new album when it first was released but if I’m being honest I don’t remember how most of the songs sound lol. “Need Someone” is a bop, definitely feels like something I could casually jam to.

- “るるちゃんの自殺配信” is interesting. I feel like the vocals would be something I don’t like, but I actually enjoy them here? The bounciness to the song is interesting, though the context behind the song makes this different. Ok, I’ve been loving Bree Runway lately, all of her songs are such jams! The verses of “ATM” are incredible, really vibing with “ATM”.

- Hosting 2020 Alt made me realize that I enjoy both Ashe and Finneas’s music a bit more than the general consensus lol. I definitely think this duet works quite well, really just a sweet song to listen to. Wow, “I See You Sometimes” is really cool. I feel like it put me in a trance lol, definitely one of my top discoveries. I’d love to give “Till Forever Falls Apart” a vote, but man Vegyn’s song was *really* cool.

- The verses in “Favor” took a bit to click with me, but the chorus is nice. I haven’t gotten as into Julien’s music as much as I have with similar artists like Phoebe, but maybe that will change considering a lot of Julien’s songs were sent for this haha. Love the instrumental on “Calvary Court”, definitely a cool sound. I think both of these are nice, “Calvary” has my attention just a bit more right now.

Zara Larsson is uhh like equivalent to Tove Lo in terms of listenable yet completely disposable pop music.

Huh, Shinsei Kamattechan is definitely not a name I'd ever expect to see in a Madness tournament. Granted, I'm not overly familiar with their work, really just know the Denpa Onna opening, which is actually a really interesting song but I do find the vocals eargrating and uhhh the new Attack on Titan opening for some reason, really doesn't seem indicative of their style, and a couple of other tracks here and there, they seem like a cool group I should listen to more. I wasn't super into this song the first time I heard it, but learning the context + watching the amazingly animated and directed music video does bump it up a bit for me. But even before I did like it more than this Bree Runway track, I usually find her pretty likable but this song was kind of annoying.

Like basically all of Ashe's stuff, I appreciate the sound on Till Forever Falls Apart more in concept than I do in execution. I do really like the dramatic, theatrical sound she's always aiming for, and the production on this track actually supports it pretty well, she just does not have the vocal chops to really stick the landing. It's still a pretty nice song to listen to though, even though I don't think the Finneas feature does much. I See You Sometimes is a kind of cool track, I like the production but uhh frankly, I don't get it. It's definitely unique and I think it's cool, just a bit too abstract for me.

Favor is a Julien Baker song. Calvary Court was a kind of cool first listen, like the punky energy in what is mainly a heartland rock track, vocals were hit or miss for me, at best they reminded me of Social Distortion, at worst I was just kinda like hmmm. I think I prefer it slightly.

Aftertouch was a pretty piece of dark pop music that I enjoy listening to in the moment, not sure if I'll ever grow to like it enough where I seek it out, but it's definitely a good fit for my personal playlist. I actually really liked the Law and Order sample on the other track, it made for a surprising good beat. I wish the vocals were a little better, but the song still had its moments. It was a surprisingly fun first listen, but I think I'm gonna stick with Aftertouch.

Stuck in the Middle is a good song, I've been a fan since it charted last year. Don't think the feature particularly adds or detracts anything sonically at least, I still feel about the same about it either way. I don't know too much about Lil Ugly Mane, don't think I've heard a song by the guy before now, but this was definitely not the sound I was expecting. It's cool though, the guitars sound cool. This one's close, it really could go either way.

This one was a pretty difficult matchup because I found both of them to be decent listens. I'm not really sold on it overall, but I could see it maybe growing on me. It takes the win here easily.

I have tried to get into "Stuck in the Middle" several times now and I just can't. It has all the pieces there to pull me in, but it just never lands fully. I wish I could pinpoint exactly what it is that turns me away, but I honestly can't. (Which is why I've given it multiple chances lol.) "Headboard" didn't particularly pull me in much either, though. I think I'll give the ever so slight edge to Tai.

Musically I prefer "Calvary Court" but the vocals are a bit of a tougher sell for me. This one's pretty close but "Calvary Court" wins out overall for me.

"Aftertouch" was a vibe; it was a pretty cool house track. "Law 'n' Order" was.... um let's just say interesting.

Tai Verdes f/ Kiana Ledé - “Stuck In The Middle Pt. II” (Kimberly, #1) vs. Lil Ugly Mane - “Headboard” (singingrulebritannia, #6)
"Stuck in the Middle Pt. II" was cute although a little uninteresting at times. "Headboard" has a really interesting beat - not something I'd listen to casually but it was a very cool listen.

House Of Harm - “Vicious Pastimes” (wheatsquares33, #1) vs. Ingrid Andress - “Feeling Things” (bboat11, #6)
"Vicious Pastimes" is really cool, I'm not necessarily familiar with the darkwave genre but been slowly getting into adjacent genres via acts like Depeche Mode so this kind of came into my ears pretty seamlessly. "Feeling Things" was in the bottom 3 of the Lady Like RD, why is it that only the tracks I don't care for a ton getting sent this Madness, haha. Ingrid's best stuff are just flat out amazing but she also has her misses and "Feeling Things" is only decent imo.

Also dremolus - solarpunk mentioned "Yoru Ni Kakeru" (the English translation would be "Racing into the Night"), it's my #4 seed so look forward to it! It's a banger (it also happens to be one of the biggest hits in Japan in 2020 but anyways).

It's based on a short story posted online called "Thanatos' Seduction" (Thanatos is the god of nonviolent deaths in Greek mythology at least from what I've read) that talks about suicide (being "seduced" by The Grim Reaper, which the "seduction" in the title comes from) so it's coming from a different context than "るるちゃんの自殺配信" which was in this round but with similar overarching themes.
