Morgan Wallen's 'Dangerous' Spends 10th Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart 3/21/2021 by Keith Caulfield www.billboard.com/articles/news/9543993/morgan-wallen-dangerous-tops-billboard-200-10-weeks
Plus: Giveon and Rob Zombie debut in top 10, Dua Lipa’s ‘Future Nostalgia’ hits new peak & Taylor Swift’s ‘Folklore’ jumps 29-10 after Grammy Award wins. Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album hits double digits at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as the set spends its 10th week atop the list. It arrived at No. 1 nine weeks ago (on the chart dated Jan. 23) and has yet to budge from the top. Dangerous is the first album to spend its first 10 weeks at No. 1 since 1987 (more on that in a moment) and continues to have the most total weeks at No. 1 since Drake’s Views spent 13 nonconsecutive weeks in the lead in 2016. Dangerous earned 69,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending March 11 (down 11%), according to MRC Data. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new March 27, 2021-dated chart (where Dangerous is No. 1 for a 10th week) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on March 23. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Dangerous’ 69,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending March 11, SEA units comprise 64,000 (down 10%, equaling 88.85 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs), album sales comprise 4,000 (down 30%) and TEA units comprise 1,000 (down 9%). Dangerous is the first album to spend its first 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since 1987, when Whitney Houston’s Whitney album logged all 11 of its weeks at No. 1 from its debut week (from the June 27 through Sept. 5, 1987-dated charts). Before that, the only other album to spend its first 10 weeks at No. 1 on the chart, which began regularly publishing as a weekly survey in March of 1956, was Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life. It spent its first 13 weeks at No. 1 (of a total of 14 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1) from the Oct. 16, 1976, through Jan. 8, 1977-dated charts. Notably Dangerous is the first album to accomplish the feat since MRC Data (then SoundScan) information began powering the chart in May of 1991. Dangerous is also the first album to string together 10 weeks in a row at No. 1 in total since Adele’s 21 linked 10 weeks in 2012 (of its total 24 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1). Dangerous is one of just four country albums to spend at least 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 -- since the chart began publishing on a regular weekly basis in March of 1956. (Country albums are defined as those that have charted on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.) Ahead of Dangerous among country sets with the most weeks at No. 1: Garth Brooks’ Ropin’ the Wind (18 weeks, 1991-92), Billy Ray Cyrus’ Some Gave All (17, 1992) and Taylor Swift’s Fearless (11, 2008-09). Pop Smoke’s former No. 1 Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon is a non-mover at No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, with 40,000 equivalent album units earned (down 2%). Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia gets a big Grammy Awards bump, as the album hits a new peak, rising 6-3 (37,000 units; up 27%). The set surpasses its original chart high of No. 4, achieved in its debut frame (April 11, 2020). Future Nostalgia won the Grammy Award for pop vocal album during CBS’ televised broadcast of the Grammys on March 14, while Lipa also performed two Future Nostalgia songs on the show: “Levitating,” featuring DaBaby, and “Don’t Start Now.” The Weeknd’s After Hours is stationary at No. 4 with 32,000 equivalent album units earned (up less than 1%). R&B singer Giveon scores his first top 10 with the No. 5 debut of When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time, bowing with 32,000 equivalent album units earned. Of the album’s starting sum, 30,000 comprise SEA units (equaling 43.56 million on-demand streams of the set’s tracks), 2,000 comprise album sales and a negligible sum comprises TEA units. The 13-track set compiles his two earlier projects, both released in 2020 -- the eight-track Take Time and the four-track When It’s All Said and Done -- and adds one new song: “All to Me.” Take Time and When It’s All Said and Done have generated a half-billion on-demand streams to date for their tracks in the U.S. Further, Take Time garnered Giveon his first Grammy nomination, for best R&B album this year. Giveon first dented Billboard’s charts a little under a year ago, when Drake’s “Chicago Freestyle,” on which he’s featured, debuted on multiple tallies in May of 2020, including the top 10 of Hot Rap Songs and the top 20 of the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. The success of the track pushed Giveon to a debut last May in the top 20 of Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart, where he peaked at No. 3 this February. He broke out on his own with singles such as “Like I Want You” and “Heartbreak Anniversary.” The former hit No. 10 on the Hot R&B Songs chart last November, while the latter marked his second top 10 on the this February. Giveon is also getting attention by way of his featured turn on Justin Bieber’s recently released track “Peaches.” Pooh Shiesty’s Shiesty Season falls 3-6 on the new Billboard 200 with 30,000 equivalent album units earned (down 8%), Lil Baby’s former No. 1 My Turn is steady at No. 7 with just under 30,000 units (up 2%) and Lil Durk’s The Voice slips 5-8 with 29,000 units (down 7%). Rob Zombie achieves his seventh top 10 album on the Billboard 200 as his new studio set The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy debuts at No. 9. All seven of Zombie’s solo studio albums have now reached the top 10. The new set earned 28,000 equivalent album units in its debut frame. Of that sum, 26,000 comprise album sales (it’s the top-selling album of the week), 2,000 comprise SEA units (totaling 2.77 million in on-demand streams of the set’s tracks) and a negligible sum comprise TEA units. The album was led by the single “The Triumph of King Freak (A Crypt of Preservation and Superstition),” which has so far peaked at No. 18 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Lunar was released via Nuclear Blast and marks the company’s second top 10, following Slayer’s Repentless (No. 4) in 2015. Closing out the Billboard 200’s new top 10 is Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Folklore, which jumps 29-10 with 28,000 equivalent album units earned (up 59%). The set is basking in the glow of its Grammy Award win for album of the year on March 14, as well as Swift’s three-song medley performance on the show. (She sang Folklore’s “Cardigan” and “August,” as well as her Evermore single “Willow.”)

Do you think Morgan would’ve gotten 10 weeks without the controversy? I think yes he absolutely would have but it is interesting to consider.

Yes, he had 3 weeks at #1 before the controversy, big fan following and 30 songs(30 songs I think was more of the driver of the 10 weeks, rather than the controversy). If the album chart was less streaming based on individual songs it would not have had 10 weeks. Sales now are pretty small

Other than radio (which doesn't factor into the BB200), the backlash had a very small impact. I think it would have probably done about the same without the controversy. Maybe even a bit less SPS here and there due to some MAGA support he got.

Many things played into him getting 10 straight weeks at #1 but the most significant will be that no one big enough dropped an album throughout that time so his run at #1 never got interrupted. In a busy year, he wouldn't get 3/4 straight weeks at #1 before a new album debuted above him.
Even with how an album that moves 28K units can make the top 10. In a busy year, you'd be lucky to get a spot in the top 10 with 35K.
The biggest artists aren't releasing new music, sales are dead and streams are down and so every chart is weak as hell right now.
When everywhere opens back up and we get a lot more activity with frequent music releases, the charts will naturally get stronger and more competitive.

It's totally mostly good luck that the run hasn't been interrupted during the last five weeks. There were weeks that no albums could debut in top ten even. But the album is probably going double platinum regardless, thanks to 30 tracks.

Maybe even a bit less SPS here and there due to some MAGA support he got. True, a lot of it comes down to money. The thing with radio is that at the time they dropped his songs, none of them were receiving very huge airplay anyway, and he as an artist and his record label don't get royalties from airplay anyway (though as a songwriter, he along with his publishing company get paid). Since there still seems to be a demand for him though, I think airplay will slowly start to creep back, and if his record label and all retailers, streamers, etc., really cared, they would pull his music from availability (not sure of the legality of all of those parties doing that though), but there's just too much money to make.

The Grammy boosts were quite lame all around, except for Taylor I guess.

Plus: Nick Jonas, Selena Gomez, Lake Street Dive debut in top 10, while Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Black Pumas and more get Grammy-fueled boosts. Rob Zombie achieves his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart as his new studio album, The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Conspiracy Theory, debuts atop the tally (dated March 27). The set was released on March 12 via Nuclear Blast and launches with 26,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending March 18, according to MRC Data. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now MRC Data. Pure album sales were the measurement solely utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. The new March 27-dated chart (where Lunar debuts to No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on March 23. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.
Lunar’s arrival at No. 1 continues Zombie’s hot streak on the tally, as all seven of his solo studio albums have reached the top 10. It follows Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser (No. 5 in 2016), Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor (No. 7, 2013), Hellbilly Deluxe 2 (No. 8, 2010), Educated Horses (No. 5, 2006), The Sinister Urge (No. 8, 2001) and Hellbilly Deluxe (No. 5, 1998).
Of Lunar’s starting sum of 26,000 sold, physical album sales comprise 20,000 of that figure (CDs: 13,200; vinyl LPs: 6,500 and cassettes: 300). The remaining 6,000 were digital albums.
The album’s CD sales were enhanced by the availability of a special edition of the set, packaged in a retro cardboard longbox. Lunar was also sold on multiple colored vinyl LP variants, helping the title debut at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart.
Not only is Lunar the first No. 1 on Top Album Sales for Zombie, but also the first for Nuclear Blast. The label previously topped out at No. 2 with Slayer’s Repentless on the chart dated Oct. 3, 2015.
Lunar also bows at No. 1 on Independent Albums and Tastemaker Albums. The latter list ranks the top-selling albums of the week at independent and small chain record stores, and Lunar sold 6,300 copies through those retailers. On the Billboard 200 chart, Lunar starts at No. 9 – the seventh top 10 for Zombie.
At No. 2 on Top Album Sales, Nick Jonas’ Spaceman debuts with 16,000 sold. It’s his fourth solo top 10 on the tally. Selena Gomez’s first Spanish-language project, Revelación, bows at No. 3 with 14,000 sold. It’s her seventh top 10.
Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Folklore jumps 13-4 with 10,000 sold (up 130%). Meanwhile, her more recent album, Evermore (another former No. 1), also bounces back into the top 10. It rises 25-9 with a little over 6,000 sold (up 88%). Both albums are basking in the glow of Swift’s performance and win on the Grammy Awards (March 14). Folklore took home album of the year, while Swift performed a three-song medley of Folklore’s “Cardigan” and “August,” and her Evermore single “Willow.”
Rock band Lake Street Dive debuts at No. 5 on Top Album Sales with their latest release, Obviously, selling 10,000 copies. It’s the second top 10 for the act, who previously reached the region with 2018’s Free Yourself Up (No. 4). The rest of the top 10 is comprised of albums all seeing sales gains thanks to exposure on the Grammy Awards. Billie Eilish’s previous leader When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is pushed down 4-6 on Top Album Sales, despite a gain, due to the number of debuts ahead of it. When We All Fall Asleep sold 8,000 copies – up 37%. Eilish performed the non-album track “Everything I Wanted” on the Grammys, which also won the record of the year award.
Harry Styles’ former No. 1 Fine Line moves 8-7 with 7,000 sold (up 27%), following Styles’ Grammy performance of the album’s “Watermelon Sugar.” The tune took home the award for best pop solo performance.
Black Pumas log their best sales week yet, as the band’s self-titled album vaults 39-10 (matching its previous chart high) with nearly 7,000 sold (up 156%). On the Grammys, the act performed the album’s “Colors,” which was also nominated for record of the year and best American roots performance.
Rounding out the new top 10 is BTS’ former No. 1 Be, falling 6-10 with 6,000 sold (up 3%). The group performed the Grammy-nominated “Dynamite” on the Grammys.

In ten years people will take look at the Billboard 200 wikipedia page and be like HOW did Morgan Wallen managed ten consecutive weeks at #1 - and then they remember that Billy Ray Cyrus managed 17 weeks at #1.

Chevelle's album joins the list of 176-plus positions droppers (Kings of Leon came close, at -170). This is the info I have. Gary, if anything is missing, do inform. Not sure if I missed anything in recent times.
