Interestingly enough, "Texas" is arguably George's most "successful" album track. Many casual radio listeners might even think this was a hit, considering that it peaked at #35 on the charts strictly from unsolicited airplay! And has undoubtedly continued to receive airplay down in Texas itself well into modern times.
On top of that, it is a successful Pulse Fave as well, making it as high as #7 in the 00s album track rankdown.
So, I am a little bit surprised to see it miss the top 50 in this cumulative rd! Although, the competition IS fierce, so... I know my rank isn't great, but honestly I have always considered this to be the most cliched of his Texas Pride songs. This is basically "I love Texas because it's Texas", while something like "Somewhere Down In Texas" actually gives us an emotional connection to the area that the listener can latch onto.

Oh wow, apparently my last place was still in?!
This isn't bad, but, like.....it's just SO meh compared to all the incredible highs that George would hit as his career progressed! The theme is cheesy, the production is more dated than anything else from this same album, and the vocals are unseasoned and oddly whiny. I'm shocked it made this rankdown at all, and then to nearly escape the bottom 30?!?! Absolutely ridiculous, tbh.

Referring to a woman as a "steal of the night" probably wouldn't fly in modern times, lmao. But in this song George is a bit of a hero for "stealing" her away from the man who was neglecting her and hitting on other women in front of her! It's admittedly a theme that nobody else could quite pull off with the same charisma and swag as King George. It's a fun listen, with a great melody. George's whole second album is more or less perfect, tbh.

"Holding My Own" is such a pleasant and comfortable listen, and it has also always been one of tim 's random favorites throughout this entire series.
This whole era is so solid, it's almost a shame it got cannibalized by the Pure Country era coming a few months later! (Granted, PC is an even better era, so at least it wasn't all in vain!) But so many songs feel like they could have been hits, such as this one, "You're Right I'm Wrong", "Trains Make Me Lonesome", "Wonderland Of Love", etc. Speaking of, it is absolutely ASININE that "Wonderland Of Love" didn't make this rankdown! I probably should have snuck that one in just by administrative decree...

The title track to George's 2003 album, "Honkytonkville" finally sees the loss of tim's last place!!! I am a lower ranker too, but tbh I still love this one... This nearly making my bottom 10 is just an example of how overall strong George's career is, and especially in a rankdown like this where everything has been filtered down to mostly the best of the best!
As much as I like this one, there are probably four or five songs I would have rather seen be hits from this era before this one ever got a chance, so I am happy to see it leave before "Honk If You Honky Tonk", "As Far As It Goes", and "She Used To Say That To Me".

Ugh, some opinions are just plain trash. Any opinion that dislikes "He Must Have Really Hurt You Bad" falls into that category. This song has such an iconic and memorable melody! Honestly one of my favorite ballad melodies of George's career. His role as the wise bartender watching a patron go through heartbreak fits him so well too. Honestly, he sells this role so well, I'd like to see him portray that character in a video or something (like that would ever happen, lmao).
When considering all of his eras, and which ones are the most "essential", I would definitely consider It Just Comes Natural to be one of his most essential ones, because it's just FULL of incredible album tracks. Top 5 for sure!

Speaking of trash opinions! Wtf are those THREE bottom 10 ranks?! In my opinion, "Why Not Now" is easily one of the top 5 biggest missed hit opportunities of George's '90 albums. "Why not now, why not here? Darlin' my heart just ain't too clear" is such a powerful melodic MOMENT, and George sings the hell out of it! Even more iconic is the baritone guitar that drives this arrangement. I can't get enough

We step all the way back to George's debut for our first #1 loss, which unfortunately for gardyfan, happens to be just outside of the top half...
Honestly, this entire rankdown continues to have no rhyme or reason to it, lol. "Her Goodbye Hit Me In The Heart" is just such a simple yet catchy jam! Easily one of my favorites from his debut, and one that I would have loved to look back on as a huge hit rather than forgettable filler like "Down And Out".

Ugh, I have lost WAY too many top 10s in the last few reveals..... Love Is Everything is to the 2010s what It Just Comes Natural was to the 2000s. Hit after hit after hit, many of which were never actually released to radio!! "When Love Comes Around Again" is one of those such hits! This one, along with "When The Credits Roll", "Sitting On The Fence", and "That's What Breaking Hearts Do" are all among the catchiest songs George put out in the entire decade of the 2010s, and would have made for MUCH better singles than "I Believe" especially, but possibly even "Give It All We Got Tonight".

Speaking of albums that are hit after hit after hit! Always Never The Same is one of his most noteworthy missed-hit albums of the '90s. I could hear the title track being a hit, but tbh it lands so far down my list because it just feels a bit more like filler than many of the other songs in this rankdown. Still a catchy jam though would have been a great hit, even though there are at least 4-5 other songs on the album that I feel deserved to be hits more. Similar to "Honkytonkville", this one being so low is a testament to just how prolific George's quality level is!

"Overnight Male" is one of George's most famous puns, from one of his most famous albums! Definitely a fan favorite, that would have made for a great single....although for me there are other melodies that I like better on the Pure Country soundtrack, so this is consistently one of my lower tracks from that album.

Our lone entry from the Blue Clear Sky album that was in this rankdown bows out next, with "I'd Just As Soon Go" barely missing the top half by one point! (Of all his albums, that is definitely one of the more single-heavy ones, lol). I do love this song, but this is right around where I ranked it, so clearly I'm fine with it leaving now, even if in my mind I'm thinking "oh no it's another one gone too soon!" I love the lyric, "it's not an easy thing to do; leavin' seldom ever is. But staying just to see us through just ain't no way to live."

Wasn't expecting a 90's killing field so early. "I'd Just As Soon Go" has such a great melody. Hard to argue with the single choices from Blue Clear Sky, but I wish they could've found room for it.
Honestly surprised to see "Why Not Now" out so soon. The melody is so engaging and the song is so catchy, it would've fit seamlessly with his late 90's run of smash hits. I expected the 90's to fare the best in this, but so far that is definitely not the case.

We give the '90s a break and dip back into the '80s for the next reveal! "Haven't You Heard" is just such a simple melody that I can't get enough of. Also, I have said this many times by now, but I love how George isn't afraid to make himself the bad guy. Every time he is an undesirable narrator, it makes for a super engaging song. In this song, when he breaks up his friend and his wife to take the wife for his own, just to suffer under the weight of his own conscience when he realizes how badly it screwed up his friend and their son, is such a great and unique perspective for a song.
