The premise of this story is probably a bit too toxic for this song to have had much of a modern shelf life, so I'm almost glad that it wasn't a single in hindsight, even though George puts a positive spin on it by refusing to accommodate the crazy guy's request and also talking him out of it, lmao. But I always had a soft spot for this one! I think it's because of the low notes George hits at the end of the chorus!

Ugh, remind me again why I even bothered to wait for Flops' list. Thanks to his entirely-uncalled-for bottom 2 rank that literally came at the moment the gates closed, "If It's Gonna Rain", which is one of the biggest missed hit opportunities of George's career PERIOD, and even WON our '00s album tracks set, ended up completely missing the top 20....
The real kicker? It was his NUMBER FOUR when we did the '00s album tracks rankdown A man with less logical taste has never existed!

Unfortunately for kw9461 and gonecountry, our first MULTI-#1 loss comes at the expense of their top-ranked song :'( "I Ain't Her Cowboy Anymore" has always been one of the, if not THE, most noteworthy single choices that was left behind on the It Just Comes Natural era, at least in terms of fan favorite status. The story of a tired cowboy who is kicked to the curb by his wife is not strange territory for George, but this one is definitely one of the best thanks to his resonant vocals being at an emotive high for this entire album. Another one that I am disappointed to see miss the top 20, as I would have pegged it for a top 10 contender heading into this thing, along with "If It's Gonna Rain".

This song, on the other hand, I'm shocked to see do quite this well! I'm not complaining though, and I'll take the perfect ranking "You're Right I'm Wrong" has such a unique and instantly-recognizable melody, and I can't help but sing along when it is on. I could hear this being successful on radio, although there was no shortage of options on Holding My Own! "Trains Make Me Lonesome" and "Wonderland Of Love" might have been a little safer.

Another one that is a bit of a surprise to see this high! "I've Got A Funny Feeling" is catchy as heck though. It's a good old-fashioned uptempo country romp, and George sings the fire out of it, just like all the instrumentalists play the fire out of it as well! Of all his albums, Carrying Your Love With Me is probably one of the hardest to argue against the single choices that were made, but this is easily another one that could have been a hit, if you ask me. Such a great album!

"House Of Cash" is another fan favorite that probably would have made a great hit! This song about the fire that famously burnt down Johnny and June's estate just a few weeks after their death, preventing most of their belongings from being auctioned off or given away, features George's fellow '90s icon Patty Loveless. And they sound great together! It's just such a unique song! This actually might be a fun song to plug into ChatGPT and see what it has to say about the subject matter

I am sorry to see I Ain't Her Cowboy Anymore leave already. What an incredible song. Jazzed to see 80 Proof still in. And a little surprised to see That's What Breaking Hearts Do and Blame It On Mexico (don't get me wrong, I find them to be great toetappers). I have a real soft spot for Designated Drinker so I'm hoping that goes Top 5.
Personally, I never saw the hype for When the Credits Roll. I get the significance of the song, it just doesn't do much for me.
All in a all, a real solid top 20 for King George.

I was going to stay up when bboat11 started revealing yesterday, but I knew if I did I'd probably just be up all night waiting for more . Anyways, let me gather my thoughts over the songs that just left. {Reveals 30-26} “One Of You” has always seemed to be a Pulse favorite from George’s catalog of album tracks, I’ve just never quite felt that same enthusiasm y’all seem to have for it lol. That isn’t to say I don’t enjoy it as it’s a fun ditty song, but I’ve honestly always kind of thought of this as album filler more than anything else.
On the other hand, “A Better Rain” is a song I always have been fond of from the first time I heard it and still reach for when I’m in the mood for it. Happy to see this make the top 30.
Speaking of the top 30, I’m honestly a bit surprised to see “Poison” sneak in as I would’ve guessed it to bow out before then. Much like “A Better Rain”, one can’t help but not get wrapped up in a song such as this one as George’s aging voice layers this with a certain texture that just almost might give you the chills.
“Make Her Fell In Love With Me Song” is a great toe-tapper and another Pulse favorite for sure. While this is another that has always felt more like album filler to my ears, I do still enjoy it. It might also surprise some (or not lol) that I’ll occasionally hear this come on the radio locally in Austin.
“A House With No Doors” is yet another Pulse favorite that in turn was bound to do well here. It’s a great song, but just not one I feel compelled enough to frequent much. More often than not, George’s spoken versus don’t bother one bit…but in this case, they do make it a bit harder for me to get into the song because of that I think. {Reveals 25-21} Dadgummit LBTrocks! “If It’s Gonna Rain” shouldn’t be anywhere near your bottom 2 let alone your bottom 10. This is a MUST-listen whenever revisiting George’s self-titled album and one that I especially love to put on in the fall/winter months as the mood just seems fitting. I’m not sure how this would’ve fared at radio, but I sure wouldn’t have complained had they released it over “Don’t Make Me Cover Over There…”. “I Ain’t Her Cowboy Anymore” is an album track that George had included in his live sets ever since the release of IJCN and only recently did he seem to take it out to make room for some other material. This is one of those songs that happens to be a fan favorite that Pulse seems to agree on overall as well. It kind of surprises me how well-received “You’re Right I’m Wrong” has been over the course of this series as it definitely has stood out as a favorite as well. I’m not complaining either as I often revisit this and quite a few other tracks from the Holding My Own album. I was going to guess that “I’ve Got a Funny Feeling” was bound to exit before the top 20 as I just didn’t think it could muster up enough support to make it in. This is yet another track that I’m somewhat surprised to see Pulse take such a liking to and probably would’ve preferred it to leave a bit earlier than it did, but hey no complaints from me as there’s no doubt that I had this on repeat back when the album first came out. Wow…we really were quite divided over “House of Cash” weren’t we! Either you were in the group that ranked this right up in the top 20, or you fell into the other category of those who ranked this at or near the bottom 20. I think this likely would’ve made the top 20 had we gotten a couple more participants on board, though.

Kicking off the top 20, we say goodbye to one of the biggest fan favorites from Honkytonkville! A fan favorite, that is, for everyone except gardyfan and George Strait Junkie , lol. Gardy even FINALLY loses his last place!
I've always just thought this one screamed "hit". It's very much got that mainstream "shine" to it. I will never not wonder what life would have been like if this had been the lead single instead of "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa"....

One of George's most notable "undesirable narrator" songs that wasn't a hit! This is a certifiable jam about a man who gets dumped by his girl, so he goes off the deep end, showing up at her mom's house stoned out of his mind, writing her letters, drinking, trying to move on until he imagines her getting intimate with somebody else and gets messed up all over again, etc... George sells it with sass, and also spruces it up with powerful fiddle, steel, and various other guitars, leading to quite a big arrangement that has a lot of cool things going on. Might be a little too dark for country radio, but it is definitely one I frequently revisit from It Just Comes Natural!

I'm still trying to process the fact that we live in a world where "You Haven't Left Me Yet" barely makes the top 20 in a celebration of George Strait's best album tracks This is one of the ones that feels like it WAS a hit, because it's just so great and so popular, and even managed to rack up quite a few weeks on the charts. One Step At A Time is another one where there is more hit potential than there is room for actual hits, and this reigns as the king on a stacked record.
At least it finished at #2 in the '90s album tracks rankdown! That was a much more fitting placement for it.

Our #3 finisher from the '80s edition of this series bows out next, taking with it tim's #2. "Honky Tonk Crazy" has definitely always been a standout from George's second album! Again, it's hard to argue with any of the singles, but this one rises towards the top of the ones that COULD have been!

There it finally is! Flops' last place!! "Blame It On Mexico" is a nice song, but tbh I am a bit surprised to see it do THIS well. It just feels so much more dated than almost anything else in this rankdown. And, also, George has always sounded very similar to Kenny Chesney on this song to me??!! Am I the only one??

Well there ya go! Proof that even the most blatant examples of filler in George Strait's catalog can find an audience! Seriously, how did THIS make the top 15 Easily the most random song that was still left. "4 Minus 3 Equals Zero", "Down Louisiana Way", and "Baby Your Baby" all beat this in the '90s rankdown, but finished like SIXTY positions lower than it this time around Like yes, they obviously all finished way too low here, but this one also overperformed by an EXTREME amount.
