"Under These Conditions" is SO freaking smooth I can't get enough of George's vocal on this song! This is the one and only placement from the If You Ain't Lovin' You Ain't Livin' album in this rankdown, and boy is it well-deserved. I know that the heteronormative lyrics may put some people on Pulse off ("a man needs a woman, a woman needs a man", etc.) but that melody is to die for when he is singing that part! This would be such a great song to dance to at a nice country wedding or something. This is yet another song that suffered from not really getting that many passionate votes to elevate it from the bottom 10.

I didn't even realize this was kicking off tonight! The only real surprise in the bottom 5 is "Under These Conditions" which certainly doesn't belong there. I just as easily could've placed this in my top 30 as it's always one of the first album tracks from If You Ain't Lovin' that I put on when revisiting the album.

We kick off our next set of reveals with another track from the '80s. "Lover In Disguise" nearly made the top 10 in the '80s rankdown, but aside from a top 15 from LBTrocks, it lacked the overall high passion to do any better than bottom 10 in a list this strong. Despite my #49 rank, I definitely love this one! The vibe is very unique, and I can see why it might make this one a little bit too polarizing to be a career standout, it is still a fun listen imo.

Beyond The Blue Neon, George's final installment of the '80s, suffers its first loss next. "Leavin's Been Comin'" nearly made the top 5 in the '80s rankdown! I do feel like that high of a placement was kinda random, but I could see it doing at least a little bit better than bottom 10 if we had managed to have more participants in this one. This one isn't quite as poignant of a "leaving song" as he would later release with similar songs like "I Ain't Her Cowboy Anymore" throughout his career, but it is still a solid song! Blue Neon is a great album, and this is one of the many that I like to come back to from it!

Honestly, I am shocked that "The Only Thing I Have Left" even managed to make this rankdown. I mean, I absolutely LOVE it. Easily one of my top 5 of his album cuts from the '80s But I feel like every time it has come up in a rankdown it has literally just baaaaaarely managed to hang on by the skin of its teeth. It feels like I am the only one who likes it, lmao. Definitely fitting that it would be my first top 20 loss. I just looked back at the '80s results, and this was the winner of a 3-way tie, where only one song was able to sneak into the top 20 and end up in the finale rankdown. "Friday Night Fever" and "Every Time You Throw Dirt On Her (You Lose A Little Ground)" both just baaaarely missed out, and it was definitely my high rank that gave TOTTIHL the edge Anyway, this is by far one of the most infectious melodies of his early years. I love every moment of this one, and absolutely never get tired of cranking it up It reminds me of like the antithesis of John Anderson's "Hillbillly Hollywood" or Travis Tritt's "I'm Gonna Be Somebody" or Alan Jackson's "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow", showing the gritty reality of how difficult life on the road can be (while also being somehow catchier than all three of them combined!!!)

tim talks about "Easy As You Go" like it was a fairly buzz-worthy fan favorite about the time that Twang was about to be released. So it felt like a fitting addition to this rankdown! That being said, I have always found it rather underwhelming overall. Especially compared to all of his all-time best album tracks. So I'm kinda glad to see it ending up in the bottom 10 here. Similar to most of the others in this region, there just wasn't the high praise to give it much of a boost. It ended up being our 9th-least polarizing song, indicating that the primarily middling ranks are what sank it.

If there's one thing George is known to be able to pull off better than just about anyone else, it's a good ol' Texas celebration song! "Somewhere Down In Texas" is so much deeper than that, though, as it not only celebrates Texas, but also celebrates the way that Texas can shape a life. "That’s where I got started, where I was born and bred. It’s a fire inside of me. I couldn’t have imagined this Texas highway led far beyond my wildest dreams." In my opinion this is his best Texas song, as it just feels so realistic and personal for George even though it wasn't written by or for him. It quite literally seems like a thank you letter to his fans. And I even remember at the time of this album's release people freaking out like "Does this mean George is retiring?!?!?!" and him responding in an interview that he just liked the song, but someday when he does retire he'll have to play it.
I was disappointed that he never did bring it back when he decided to retire. This would have fit absolutely PERFECTLY in his big closing stretch that included "I'll Always Remember You", "Troubadour", and "The Cowboy Rides Away". Like I'm actually getting goosebumps right now when I think about it. I need to post this and move on with my life before I start getting too invested in things that are never going to happen!

"Arkansas Dave" still remains a staple in George's live shows as I think he's performed it on each and every tour since Twang. I don't find myself revisiting that album much, but whenever I do this song still remains a highlight from it.

It's really ironic that "Arkansas Dave" would outlast "Somewhere Down In Texas" by one position and one point, because that scenario was exactly flipped in the '00s rankdown! SDIT was one point and one position ahead in that one I'd say that's pretty good consistency for these two songs! "Arkansas Dave" is a nice simple story song, along the same veins of some of the classics of this genre like Marty Robbins' "El Paso". Written by George's son Bubba, this has always been a little bit of a fan favorite. I do like it fine, but the '90s neo-trad style that dominated George's career is just waaaaay more my style as a country music fan. So like after jamming to powerful melodic anthems like "Blue Clear Sky" and "Heartland", this more '60s/'70s traditional style just sounds a bit limp to me.

WE FINALLY HAVE OUR FIRST LAST-PLACE LOSS!!!! Congrats to George Strait Junkie ! That dishonor falls on the shoulders of "Remember The Alamo", which is only the second loss to come from the '90s. I do consider this to be a great song, but I can definitely see it not stacking up as well in a list of his all-time greats. It's great, but not career-defining, lol. One Step at a Time is one of his best '90s albums imo, and as great as this song is there are still a solid 3-4 other songs that I would have put in the should-have-been-singles category before this one.

Going back to the previous set of reveals, the most disappointing one for myself was "Leavin's Been Comin' (For A Long, Long Time)" as that already puts me down one in the top 15. That's one of those songs that I remember being instantly drawn to when I first head it as a young boy and as such it still remains a favorite track of mine that I revisit every now and again. tim talks about "Easy As You Go" like it was a fairly buzz-worthy fan favorite about the time that Twang was about to be released. It did have some initial buzz amongst the fans as the short audio clip with the chorus from the pre-release certainly sounded promising, especially with songwriter Steve Bogard's name attached to it as he also penned "Carrying Your Love With Me" and "Carried Away". While the song never quite lived up to the initial expectations I personally had for it, it still is one of the tracks that always comes to mind from Twang.

One Step at a Time is one of his best '90s albums imo, and as great as this song is there are still a solid 3-4 other songs that I would have put in the should-have-been-singles category before this one. Welp, speak of the devil..... 68. "Neon Row" Album: One Step At A TimeDecade: '90sOriginal Placement: #23

"Remember the Alamo" is a bit long by George's standards as it clocks in at over four and a half minutes. As such, I'm only ever going to put it on if I happen to be revisiting One Step at a Time.

Yea, I'm not entirely surprised by the back-to-back losses for OSAAT as "Neon Row" also clocks in at almost five minutes long which I think is a rarity in George's catalog. That said, both of these songs are a must-listen whenever revisiting the album!

NOT One Step at a Time starting to suffer multiple casualties!!! :'( Like I alluded to above, this is one of his most missed-single-filled albums in my eyes. I am a DIE HARD "Neon Row" stan. I am just absolutely captivated by every moment of George's vocal performance, more than anything else. He simply has no peer who has the right blend of baritone lows and powerful highs to have belted this one out the way that George did. I suppose Alan would have also done a great job with it, but there's just something so earnest and warm and balanced about George's vocals that makes it hard for me to imagine anyone else comparing to him.
His ability to belt is severely underrated as well, so this is always one of my go-to examples of him putting it on display. I honestly cannot fathom why this always seems to be one of his more polarizing songs, as it also seems to be one that has just baaaarely scraped by every time it has been ranked.

I had always kinda hoped that "Peace Of Mind" would've followed "Write This Down" as the album's third single (over "What Do You Say To That") as I thought it would have made for a great choice to hear on the radio waves over late summer/early fall. I've been a stan of this song ever since I first heard it and is one that I still put on from time to time, especially if I'm on a road trip.

"Remember The Alamo", "Neon Row", and "Peace Of Mind" all finished really close to each other in the '90s rankdown as well, so it makes sense to see them all keeping each other company here. Always Never the Same is another missed-single-filled album, and to me this is one of them that has potential, but it is also similar to "Alamo" in that there are a few others that I would have put even ahead of it. The melody here has a tendency to get stuck in my head sometimes, without a doubt!
Speaking of missed singles from this album, I just realized that "I Look At You" didn't even make this rankdown, despite being the highest-placing album track in the album rankdown! It only made it to #34 in the '90s rankdown. Wild!
