Justin Bieber Scores Eighth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Justice' 3/28/2021 by Keith Caulfield www.billboard.com/articles/news/9547575/justin-bieber-justice-tops-billboard-200
Plus: Lana Del Rey’s 'Chemtrails Over the Country Club' bows at No. 2. Justin Bieber achieves his eighth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as Justice debuts atop the tally with 154,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending March 25, according to MRC Data. The album was released via Raymond Braun/Def Jam on March 18. Justice halts the chart-topping domination of Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album, which spent 10 consecutive weeks in a row, all from its debut, at No. 1. It falls to No. 3 on the new chart. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new April 3, 2021-dated chart (where Justice opens at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on March 30. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Justice’s 154,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending March 25, SEA units comprise 119,000 (equaling 157.02 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs), album sales comprise just over 30,000 and TEA units comprise a little more than 4,000. Justice’s start of 154,000 represents the second-biggest debut week for an album in 2021, following Dangerous’ start of 265,000 (Jan. 23-dated chart). The new album was previewed by a quartet of top 40-charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart: “Holy,” featuring Chance the Rapper (No. 3; Oct. 3, 2020-dated chart); “Lonely,” with Benny Blanco (No. 12; Jan. 23); “Anyone” (No. 6; Jan. 16) and “Hold On” (No. 26; March 20). The album's newest single is "Peaches," featuring Giveon and Daniel Caesar. The track was released alongside the album, and it's likely to bow on an array of Billboard charts dated April 3. All 10 of Bieber’s charting albums have reached the top 10. He’s only missed the top slot twice. Here’s a recap of all 10 of his charting sets: Justice (No. 1), Changes (No. 1; Feb. 20, 2020), Purpose (No. 1; Dec. 5, 2015), Believe: Acoustic (No. 1; Feb. 16, 2013), Believe (No. 1; July 7, 2012), Under the Mistletoe (No. 1; Nov. 19, 2011), Never Say Never: The Remixes EP (No. 1; March 5, 2011), My Worlds Acoustic (No. 7; Dec. 11, 2010), My World 2.0 (No. 1 for four weeks; April 10, 2010) and My World EP (No. 5; April 10, 2010). As Bieber is a youthful 27 years and one month old (he turned 27 on March 1), he also happens to be the youngest soloist with eight No. 1 albums. He was already the youngest to notch seven. Elvis Presley was previously the youngest soloist with either seven or eight leaders, until Bieber’s latest No. 1s came long. Presley was 26 years and 11 months, and then 29 years and 11 months, respectively, when the soundtracks to Blue Hawaii and Roustabout topped the chart in 1961 and 1965, respectively. If one also counted groups in these calculations, all four members of The Beatles were younger than 26 at the time of the band’s eighth No. 1, 1965’s Yesterday and Today. For the first time in nearly three months, the Nos. 1 and 2 albums on the Billboard 200 are both debuts, as Lana Del Rey’s Chemtrails Over the Country Club bows at No. 2. The set starts with 75,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, 58,000 comprise album sales (making it the top-selling album of the week), 16,000 comprise SEA units (equaling 21.19 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs) and less than 1,000 comprise TEA units. Chemtrails Over the Country Club is Lana Del Rey’s seventh top 10 album, of eight total charting sets, following Norman f**king Rockwell! (No. 3; Sept. 14, 2019), Lust for Life (No. 1; Aug. 12, 2017), Honeymoon (No. 2; Oct. 10, 2015), Ultraviolence (No. 1; July 5, 2014), Paradise (No. 10; Dec. 1, 2012) and Born to Die (No. 2; Feb. 18, 2012). Her only album to miss the top 10 was her self-titled release, which peaked at No. 20 on Jan 28, 2012. The last time both the Nos. 1 and 2 albums on the Billboard were debuts was on the Dec. 26, 2020-dated list, when Taylor Swift’s Evermore and Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon III: The Chosen debuted in the top two slots, respectively. Back on the new chart, Wallen’s Dangerous falls 1-3 in its 11th week on the list, with 66,000 equivalent album units earned (down 4%). Pop Smoke’s former leader Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon is pushed down two spots to No. 4 with 40,000 equivalent album units earned (up less than 1%). Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia descends 3-5 with 36,000 equivalent album units earned (down 5%), Pooh Shiesty’s Shiesty Season is a non-mover at No. 6 with 31,000 units (up 3%) and The Weeknd’s former No. 1 After Hours dips 4-7 with nearly 31,000 units (down 5%). Lil Baby’s previous leader My Turn falls 7-8 with 30,000 equivalent album units earned (down less than 1%), Lil Durk’s The Voice lowers 8-9 with 28,000 units (down 3%) and Luke Combs’ former No. 1 What You See Is What You Get rises 11-10 with 27,000 units (up 2%).

I wonder the last time the turnover on Billboard 200 has been so slow? The late 90s probably.

I wonder the last time the turnover on Billboard 200 has been so slow? The late 90s probably. I think so...in 1998 there were only two new number one albums from the start of the year through early May thanks to 'Titanic'. Celine Dion's album 'Let's Talk About Love', which included "My Heart Will Go On", spent a week on top in January and then the film's soundtrack was number one for 16 weeks. I think that was also the last time we had gotten this far into the year with more number one singles on the Hot 100 (7 in '98 between January and early May) than albums on the BB 200. Last week we had 3 number one singles and only 2 number one albums; this week it's still likely to be 4 number singles versus 3 number one albums.

Not even just with the #1 spot, but the top 10 on Billboard 200 has been very stagnant too. 5-6 albums have spent nearly the entire quarter top 10. Obviously the top20/top 40 and beyond has been extremely stagnant too, probably more than ever easily.

Plus: Justin Bieber, Loretta Lynn, Jon Batiste, Paul Stanley and Benny the Butcher & Harry Fraud bow in top 10. Lana Del Rey rules Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, as her new studio album, Chemtrails Over the Country Club, debuts at No. 1 on the list dated April 3. It’s her third chart-topper on the list, following 2017’s Lust for Life and 2014’s Ultraviolence. Chemtrails was released March 19 via Polydor/Interscope and starts with 58,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending March 25, according to MRC Data. With Chemtrails’ arrival, Lana Del Rey scores the third-largest sales week for an album released in 2021, and the largest sales week for an album released by a female artist this year. Only the debut frames of Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album (74,000) and Foo Fighters’ Medicine at Midnight (64,000) were larger. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now MRC Data. Pure album sales were the measurement solely utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. The new April 3-dated Top Album Sales chart (where Chemtrails debuts to No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on March 30. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.
Of Chemtrails’ debut sales of 58,000, physical album sales comprise 48,600 of that figure (CDs: 16,200; vinyl LPs: nearly 31,600 and cassettes: 800) while digital album sales comprise 9,700.
Chemtrails was a spectacular seller on vinyl LP, with nearly 32,000 copies sold – or, 54% of the album’s total first-week sales. Its vinyl fortunes were bolstered by the set’s availability across an array of different LP variants including multiple colored vinyl editions, picture discs and a standard black vinyl LP.
Chemtrails also scores the fourth-largest sales week for a vinyl album since MRC Data began tracking sales in 1991. Ahead of Chemtrails are the debut weeks of Jack White’s Lazaretto (40,000; June 28, 2014-dated chart), Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy (nearly 34,000; Dec. 10, 1994) and Paul McCartney’s McCartney III (32,000; Jan. 2, 2021).
Chemtrails naturally also debuts at No. 1 on the weekly Vinyl Albums chart.
Chemtrails additionally starts at No. 1 on Tastemaker Albums, which ranks the top-selling albums of the week at independent and small chain record stores. The set sold 6,000 copies through those retailers across all formats (CD, vinyl LP, etc.).
Justin Bieber’s Justice opens at No. 2 on Top Album Sales, selling 30,000 copies in its first week. The set concurrently bows atop the Billboard 200, where it marks his eighth leader.
Fleet Foxes’ Shore re-enters Top Album Sales at No. 3 with 18,000 sold (up 8,866%) after its release on physical formats on March 19. The album was released on digital retail and streaming services last year and previously spent two weeks on the tally, debuting and peaking at No. 32 on the Oct. 3, 2020-dated chart from download sales only (3,000 sold in its first week).
Like Shore, Chris Cornell’s No One Sings Like You Anymore, Volume One re-enters Top Album Sales (No. 4; 11,000 – up 5,897%) after its physical release. The covers set by the late artist initially debuted and peaked at No. 71 on the Dec. 26, 2020, chart (5,000 sold) after its digital release.
Loretta Lynn’s 50th studio album Still Woman Enough starts at No. 5 – the country legend’s highest-charting effort in the 29-year history of the Top Album Sales chart. The set, which features Reba McEntire, Margo Price, Tanya Tucker and Carrie Underwood, launches with 10,000 copies sold. Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Folklore falls 4-6 with 9,800 sold (down 6%).
Jon Batiste earns his best sales week ever and first top 10 on Top Album Sales, as We Are debuts at No. 7 with 9,500 sold. The album includes contributions from PJ Morton, Trombone Shorty and Mavis Staples. Batiste’s previous sales high came in the week ending Dec. 22, 2016, when his Christmas With Jon Batiste album sold 5,700.
Paul Stanley’s Soul Station bows at No. 8 with Now and Then, selling 8,000 copies. The covers collection from the Kiss co-founder and his ensemble band Soul Station includes classics such as “Let’s Stay Together,” “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me).” Now and Then marks the first top 10 for Stanley outside of Kiss on Top Album Sales.
Billie Eilish’s former No. 1 When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? falls 6-9 with 7,600 sold (down 10%).
Closing out the new top 10 is Benny the Butcher and Harry Fraud’s new The Plugs I Met 2, bowing with 7,300 copies sold. The hip-hop set boasts guest turns from 2 Chainz, Fat Joe and French Montana, among others.

Bieber's album isn't terrible but hard to draw inspiration... even with the MLK skits that seem oddly placed to further draw attention.
Props to "Holy" but meh...

Bieber's album isn't terrible but hard to draw inspiration... even with the MLK skits that seem oddly placed to further draw attention. Props to "Holy" but meh... He has already explained why he added that on and it certainly wasn't for attention. No offense but I don't think Bieber needs any more attention than he already gets. Holy is one of the worst songs on the album.
