Yep. Doesn't have a very good voice, and he was a pretty unsavory individual. I think he'd be held in a very different light if he were around in the modern age, kinda similar to how people in recent times have started to sour on Elvis. I mean, I think that goes for every artist during that time period and wouldn't apply just to Johnny Cash. Much like Willie Nelson, I can understand though why his voice may not appeal to you and many others on Pulse lol.

#9 Kenny Rogers - The Gambler
Which song will miss the top 10? Dolly Parton - Coat of Many Colors VS Loretta Lynn - Don't Come Home A' Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)

Despite being a fan of both, "Follow Your Arrow" and "Goodbye Earl" are clear outliers amongst the rest of the songs here. Other than that, this is a pretty stellar top 10!

Which song will miss the top 10? I think it'll be Loretta Lynn's "Don't Come Home A' Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)".

RS comment
My comment Pretty great upbeat tune that captures Loretta's sense of self-esteem. Also a previous rankdown winner, but the real question is will this rankdown bring a new winner?

Two Johnny Cash songs in the top 10 and none from Loretta Lynn? Gross.

Two Johnny Cash songs in the top 10 and none from Loretta Lynn? Gross. I’d definitely trade “Ring of Fire” for “Coal Miner’s Daughter” as I thought that one was all but a lock for the top 10.

1. 2 Johnny is a bit surprising, and I Walk the Line is by far my fav, and somehow the other two made it to the top 10 :'( Also, I knew Reba would be popular here, but how Fancy made it to the list over her other songs is beyond my understanding. 2. Lots! Springsteen and Passionate Kisses in particular. 3. Independence Day should take the cake. The top 5 would be Martina, Kacey, Earl, and 2 Dollies.

1. Any surprises made in top 10? Not really surprising but Johnny Cash getting in is a nope from me. Hope his songs exit before top 5, at least. 2. Any disappointments that didn't make the top 10? No Loretta is the biggest shock to me. I also was hoping for my #1 ofc so it was sad to see Jeannie tanked. 3. Predict the top 10:
01. Dolly Parton - Jolene 02. Martina McBride - Independence Day 03. Reba McEntire - Fancy 04. Dolly Parton - Coat of Many Colors 05. The Chicks - Goodbye Earl 06. Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow 07. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues 08. Kenny Rogers - The Gambler 09. Patsy Cline - Crazy 10. Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire

I told myself I would wait to start reading the thread again until recordyear reached the top 10, because I expected the results to be piss-poor on account of my list leaning heavily toward the oldies. And yea, expectations met, pretty much The top 10 itself ended up OK though. And at least 1 of my rankdown's songs got here (but I doubt it's making the top 5 at this point) 1 3 4 8 17 31 49 50 73 84 the highest 5 are in my S and A/Love tiers, the middle 3 are in my B/great tier, and the lowest 2 are in my C/decent tier. I was worried for a bit there would be a flat-out dud in the top 10, but that fear evaporated when "I Hope You Dance" left. Most likely either my #50 or my #8 is winning--depends on if we're all on the same page with the latter. I'll put the odds 60/40 in favor of the #50

I'm in shock at some of the low rankings for these two. These belong in the top 10 for sure. These are two of the greatest Country songs of all time and you have songs like "Follow Your Arrow" and "Folsom Prison Blues" ahead of them!!!! Just wow I am beyond shocked at these results! Especially shocked at those ranks below the top 30 as those are extremely egregious ranks! As for the top 10: I am hoping to see "Independence Day" win this as it is the only song in the Top 10 that I think is deserving to win. Both FYA and FPB better not be in the top 5 because that would be rather disgusting based on some of the songs that missed the top 10 imo lol

I know that "Ode to Billie Jo" is iconic, but I have just never liked the song at all. I'm glad I wasn't left out all alone in the cold of the bottom rankers. Is it iconic? I know I'm no expert on older country music, but I've literally never heard this song or Bobbie Gentry. I didn't care for it though, so you're welcome

I'll have to look up Bobbie's version sometime.

I felt like most of this list was more influential than iconic.
Great top 10 though, I can't complain about any of them.

Especially shocked at those ranks below the top 30 as those are extremely egregious ranks! Don't you think top 1/3 is a little too high a cut-off line to be calling anything below it unacceptable in a list this amazing? Like, it's a rankdown literally built for high variations. I mean, my ~27-45 range were all the same level of great and were hard to put in any order, so my 27 wasn't at all apart from my 35, but you're saying the first rank is OK and the second rank is not because of an arbitrary bar Also it seems odd to me that for you Folsom Prison Blues is so distant from He Stopped Loving Her Today and Mama Tried. Idk if you were stating from a 'personal' or 'objective' point of view, but either way. All 3 are cut from a pretty similar cloth; whenever I queue up one on YouTube or Spotify the algorithm inevitably suggests the other 2 within the next ~10-15 songs (and that's putting aside how hearing the crowd responses on the At Folsom Prison live version should be enough to melt anyone's heart). You can't be that surprised anyway, like, I've talked to people from all walks of life about country and when I ask about pre-80s country, Cash/Haggard/Jones are always 3 of the first names to come up, and FPB/MT/HSLHT are among the most common songs to be brought up as their signature songs. So in my experience they're inextricably associated as being in the same category of reverence. Plus, this is now Folsom Prison Blues' second top 10 finish on this forum, and the first time was also an all-years rankdown

So in my experience they're inextricably associated When it comes to Cash the song I consider his signature is "Ring of Fire" and that is the one I feel deserves to be the highest of his songs. Not saying I dislike FPB but of what is remaining and what missed it is the outlier for my personal preference. I mean it isn't egregious that FPB made the top 10 but I personally would prefer quite a few of the songs that just missed (including "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'" as another shocking miss).
For songs as high caliber as "Mama Tried" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today" I Don't think saying Top 30 is too high of a cut-off line because without them most of the Country music we all love today wouldn't exist. These songs paved the road and still hold up amongst today's songs. I mean fair enough that a rank at 35 is not really unacceptable, but the lower ranks are a bit shocking imo.
This is all just my opinion, I truly mean no disrespect and my comments are all meant more in a light-hearted manner. I do stand by that "Mama Tried" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today" are two of the greatest songs ever and should have been easy locks for the top 10 so I'm shocked they missed so being a bit dramatic over them missing was necessary lol.
