I like "Redneck Woman" but I just don't think it's as good as most of the songs here.
Also what is this Bobbie Gentry hate because "Ode to Billie Joe" better stay in for a while!

I 100% agree that "Ode To Billie Joe" needs to stick around for a while, I love that song. Shocked to see "Redneck Woman" out already. While I'm not the biggest fan of this song and have always felt it was a bit overrated, I thought it was a bit more popular here and figured it was a lock for top 50 at least. I do think overplay killed this song and continues to do so, which might have contributed here I do think "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" and "Walking The Floor Over You" both deserved better and am disappointed but not shocked to see them out so early.

I still can’t get over the fact that “Okie From Muskogee” is out already lol. I’m sure I was first introduced to this song during one of those Time Life classic country infomercials that they used to air back in the early/mid 90s and in turn its one of those songs I’ve grown up with since my youth.
Speaking of being out too soon, “Blue Moon of Kentucky” should’ve at least made the top 50 at a minimum. Especially given that Bill Monroe is the Father of Bluegrass!
I wanted to like Bobby Bare’s “Streets of Baltimore” more than I did, but I really could’ve done without the obtusely loud background vocals during part of the chorus. I had no idea this was co-written by Tompall Glaser and although I’ve never mentioned it before, my brother is married to his niece as most of the Glaser family resides in Nebraska.
I need to dive into John Anderson’s 80s material more as I’m really only familiar with his big hit hits of that decade. Of those that I do know, “Wild and Blue” isn’t a favorite of mine at all.
“Old Hippie” by the Bellamy Brothers seems like a song that is a bit of an outlier on this list at first, but this is one of their signature hits and another that I’m sure I was introduced to from those Time Life infomercials lol. There is just something really catchy about this song and even if you don’t know all the words, I’m sure you’ll end up humming along to it.
I had no idea where to rank “Redneck Woman” because I’m just not even sure this is a song that belongs in this list by Rolling Stone. And overplay has done no favors for me with it. There are times when I'm in the right mood to hear it, but this wasn't one of those times as I was completing the rankdown.

Unfortunate news, but I accidentally entered some of the bboat11 's ranks wrongly (Text to Column function in Excel can be tricky). Basically, the current stats of this rankdown is: 70. Gretchen Wilson - Redneck Woman (891) 71. Buck Owens and the Buckaroos - Act Naturally (916) 72. Bellamy Brothers - Old Hippie (920) 73. Flatt and Scruggs - Foggy Mountain Breakdown (927) 74. Stanley Brothers - Man of Constant Sorrow (948) 75. John Anderson - Wild and Blue (954) 76. ??? 77. Bobby Bare - Streets of Baltimore (976) 78. Bill Monroe and The Blue Grass Boys - Blue Moon of Kentucky (982) 79. Ernest Tubb - Walking the Floor Over You (983) 80. O.B. McClinton - Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You (988) 81. Merle Haggard - Okie from Muskogee (1001) 82. Buck Owens and the Buckaroos - I've Got a Tiger By the Tail (1015) 83. Porter Wagoner - A Satisfied Mind (1056) 84. Tom T. My comment Despite being very ancient music, the music from The Carter Family has that catchiness that makes them more listenable than other songs from that era. ====== Also, no new set reveals later today. Have to recharge myself a bit before continuing.

Catching up with a lot, but ... - Man, y'all did Buck Owens dirty! - "Walking the Floor All Over You" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" are objective classics I do really enjoy, but I get why others don't. - I love, love, LOVE John Anderson, and I can't for the life of me understand why "Wild & Blue" is one of his most popular tunes. Would have rather seen something from his '90s run. - I know it's the classic, but I've just heard, like, a million better versions of "Man of Constant Sorrow." - Gretchen Wilson ... honestly, tim said it best.

While I don't use Excel, I do utilize Google Sheets to organize my rankdowns and also have a system in place that pretty much allows me to copy/past everything over instead of inputting the data manually. I learned the hard way though that even a missing "The" from the title of a song can throw someones entire list out of whack haha.

Yeah, no, y'all did Gretchen dirty. "Redneck Woman" is one of the biggest female country songs of all time for a reason. What an absolute BOP that is. Timeless... unlike a lot of these dusty old tunes. Also what is this Bobbie Gentry hate because "Ode to Billie Joe" better stay in for a while! I have been thinking the same thing. I had that pegged for a possible top 20 finish, but now I wonder if it'll go out quite a bit lower as a result of a few tankers. It's a superb classic though.

Yeah, I'm surprised by the negative comments about Bobbie Gentry as well. "Ode To Billie Joe" is such a classic. One of the greatest story songs (and the lyrics still contain a mystery to this day). Bobbie has said that she knows what Billie Joe threw off of the bridge, but she will never reveal it.

Phew, finally caught up on everything after not really being around Pulse much the last couple days! So far this is still going pretty well. There is nothing that has really shocked me or felt too wrong.
"Convoy" is one that my dad talks about all the time, as it was a song that was important during his formative years while his dad spent a few years driving a semi truck in the '70s. The chorus is definitely lame compared to the verses, but the verses themselves are so jargon-filled that I'm not surprised to see this not be very widely appreciated among us!
Glad to see that "T is for Texas" was the higher of the two "Blue Yodel" numbers, as I found that one to be significantly stronger than the other one!
Hank Williams has got to be one of the biggest-names-with-the-worst-voices ever to come from this genre. The rest of his songs can leave anytime now!
I have no idea why I've never really been able to get into "Crazy Arms". It plays all the time on the country radio station in GTA V, and I always think it sounds really discordant for some reason.
"A Satisfied Mind" is the one that I am most disappointed about so far. I thought that Porter's voice sounded really strong here, and the melody made this one of the old ballads in this list that stayed with me the most.
Very impressed to see the instrumental make the top 3/4 of the least here!!!!!! "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" was a jam, but I didn't have high hopes for it 'cuz instrumental!
I had never even heard of "Wild And Blue" before this Rankdown, and after listening to it I am SHOCKED that this is somehow supposed to be one of John Anderson's biggest classics!! "Straight Tequila Night" or "Seminole Wind" or "I've Got It Made" would have been significantly stronger contributions from his career, although the list seems heavily biased against '90s country for some reason.
"Old Hippie" was a nice discovery that I found to be really catchy!

Oh yeah, and similar to castleoblivion26 I though that "Redneck Woman" might make it closer to the middle of the rankdown, but I am 100% not shocked to see it be the first of the songs from my lifetime to leave us. It doesn't feel quite as out of place in this list as something like "Welcome To The Future", but it is still out of place considering that there are substantially more influential artists who weren't even included, like Alan Jackson. Of course it still pretty easily made my top 20 here just because it's more in line with my favorite eras of country music, lol.

My comment I think the gender disparity displayed in lyrics is not very good, like "She never makes a scene/By hangin' all over me in a crowd", "she makes me glad that I'm a man" and probably the worst of it all, "She's always a lady/Just like a lady should be/But when they turn out the lights/She's still a baby to me" which sounds a bit creepy to me. Also a nice number for this song.

RS comment My comment I think this is a weaker Hank Williams song in this rankdown but this is too low. The lyrics sum up country music pretty well. This received some bumps to 40s when some high ranks came, including a top 5 rank from zack97, eventually though it ended up in the 60s and the well-known Hank Williams hater bboat11 pushed this down to its lowest rank ever in the rankdown.

Hank's "I Saw The Light" is a song that I came to be familiar with at a fairly young age as it's intertwined with pop culture overall. This was also used as the title to the biographical film with Tom Hiddleston starring as Hank Williams. Unfortunately the movie didn't really do his legacy the justice it was so deserved.

RS comment My comment As I mentioned before I am not a religious person, and this imagery is overused and often used out of context in lyrics of modern country music, but it's hard to argue this gospel song is very catchy and well-suited to Hank Williams' life. It had a strong start before zack97 pushed it down to 60s where it hovered around since.
