Hank's "I Saw The Light" is a song that I came to be familiar with at a fairly young age as it's intertwined with pop culture overall. This was also used as the title to the biographical film with Tom Hiddleston starring as Hank Williams. Unfortunately the movie didn't really do his legacy the justice it was so deserved. For some reason I read this at first as a biographical film of Tom Hiddleston starring Tom Hanks, and you can probably imagine the mind fuck that I just experienced trying to figure all the logistics of that out 😂😂😂

Going back to Charlie Rich for a sec, he is also most well-known for this infamous CMA moment (of which John Denver wasn't even aware of until after the ceremony):

Coming up is the first tie of the three ties in this rankdown. It's between two male songs (whereas the latter two ties involve one male song and one female song), and it involves top 20 ranks to break the tie.

My comment I enjoyed the performance of choir more than the singer tbh. The orchestra is good but not that impressive. This was having a 50s finish until the last two ranks pushed it down (it feels like I wrote this a lot during the reveals...)

I was kind of surprised to find a Ray Charles song on this list honestly. It's a good one nonetheless and has two stellar co-writers of the time.

My comment *insert Texas Country singers can't actually sing joke* Seriously though the instrumentals at the end always get me because of how epic it sounds, but the almost 6 minutes length of the song didn't do any favors. This switched between 40s and 50s for some period before it ended up in the 60s.

Not one of my favorite songs by Jerry Jeff Walker, but it's hard not to like anything by him who unfortunately passed away last year. He was a local Austinite and I had the pleasure of meeting him once quite a few years back...he was rather eccentric but incredibly down to earth and friendly.

As a lifelong Texan I have always been a sucker for Texas country. It's cool to see a fellow Austinite being represented here too.

My comment The lyrics are cute, especially in the second verse where he sang "But if you run short of money I'll run short of time/Cause you with no more money honey I've no more time" This has got one of the flatest trajectory graph here.

Lefty Frizzell always makes me think of this song, which is pretty much all I know about him, lmao. Especially because "If You've Got The Money" is name dropped! So it was nice encountering him for the first time in this rd. I did enjoy his other song more though, lol. (Shameless plug, this one will be in George Strait's '80s album tracks rankdown later this summer! )

I think Lyle Lovett is a rather underrated artist on Pulse as he is someone who is considered a legend down here in Texas. That said, "If I Had a Boat" did seem like a bit of an outlier on the list.

My comment For a 1988 song, the production is so clean it's kinda refreshing in this group of songs. Sadly I cannot relate to the mindset of the lyrics at all. The trajectory graph is a steady rising one, suggesting I am the lowest ranker out of all participants. (Sorry not sorry)

One of the songs featured in a previous rankdown will be eliminated in the next reveal.

I really liked "If I Had A Boat", and thought Lyle Lovett's voice was really strong! The mentions of Tonto and saying "kemosabe" felt a bit outdated and out of touch, but overall this has a really pleasant melody and I enjoyed listening to it a lot.

He's even opened for George a few times already in Vegas I think! Lyle often performs here in the Austin area and I regret never seeing him live yet (although he's usually a pricey ticket).

"Hello Walls" is another classic country song that I became familiar with at a young age (again, that's most likely due to those Time Life infomercials). This most certainly should've been in the top 50.

My comment This was featured in gates personal country rankdown where it finished at #33/50. I still love this song, but the competition in this rankdown is tough especially the top 50.

"Hello Walls" did sound familiar af, but I figured I must have just heard it on a random oldies station since we haven't ranked many of these oldies before And I did enjoy it quite a bit too!
