What are some songs where the main artist contributes so little that they sound like a featured artist on their own song?
One that comes to mind for me is French Montana on "Unforgettable." Swae Lee's hook is so long compared to French's two very short verses.
Another one that stands out to me is The Notorious BIG on "Mo Money Mo Problems." He just gets a single verse like all the other featured artists, and it's the last one.
Finally, Flo Rida's GDFR seems dominated by Sage the Gemini, given Flo only songs the first verse and incredibly short bridge.

Rihanna's "Break It Off" seems more like a Sean Paul song featuring Rihanna.

I don't want to diminish his contributions or successes, but Santana's late 1990s/early 2000s hits like "Smooth", "Maria Maria", "The Game of Love", and "Why Don't You and I" often make Carlos Santana sound like a session musician playing guitar on others' hits.
Similarly, Herb Alpert on "Diamonds" and "Making Love In the Rain", on which he sounds like a guest musician playing trumpet on a Janet Jackson and/or Lisa Keith record.

Any song where the lead artist is only an instrumentalist or producer.

Any song where the lead artist is only an instrumentalist or producer. Respectfully disagree. There are tons of songs where the producer is the lead artist and their personality comes through in the instrumentals.

#Beautiful
Mainly because Miguel sings for a long time before Mariah is even heard. Still a CLASSIC.

Any Jennifer Lopez song where Ashanti, Brandy, or Christina Milian's vocals were combined with hers
The Britney songs where Myah Marie sang for her.

Meant To Be is my go-to example for this. Bebe Rexha, the main artist, doesn't even come in until the second verse, about a minute into the song. Even so, she gets three-quarters of a verse before Tyler Hubbard interrupts her to close that section out. FGL really does dominate that song (which I think completely sucks, BTW...not sorry).

The pop radio version fixes this and actually has Bebe sing the first and second verse. FGL doesn't come on until the third verse.

I've only ever heard that version in passing, so I can't speak to how much that version improves upon the original outside of Bebe sounding more like the main artist. All I know is that the original version, which got the music video, is terrible, and fits perfectly into this thread's theme.

Rihanna's "Break It Off" seems more like a Sean Paul song featuring Rihanna. While it's not Anne-Marie's song technically, I feel the same way about Sean's constant ad-libbing over her vocals on the chorus of Clean Bandit's "Rockabye."

We The Best Music! Another One! DJ Khaled!
On almost every song DJ Khaled is in if he's the lead. He had more lines if he's not the lead though (e.g. Migos' Culture as a feature and Will Smith's Friend Like Me [End Title])

Mariah Carey's "Glitter" has two notorious examples. In fact, the main criticism regarding this album is how often Mariah sounds like a guest among her features.
I love this tune, but it's pretty much Mystikal ft. Mariah.
This, on the other hand, didn't work for me. Way too long and overcrowded.

They were already mentioned but I agree with the earlier mentions of the Santana songs of the early 2000s, the Herb Alpert/Janet Jackson team-ups of the late 80s and Notorious BIG's "Mo Money Mo Problems" (that last one feels more of a Puff Daddy/Mase track rather that a Biggie track as "Been Around the World" and "All About the Benjamins" are similar with the Puff Daddy feat. [Insert rapper/R&B singer here] formula.)
A few others that come to mind: - What about Mariah Carey and Bone Thugs N Harmony's "Breakdown", feels more of a Bone Thugs track rather than a Mariah track to me.
- Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real" remix with Ja Rule
- "What's It's Gonna Be" and "Tell Me What You Want" by Busta Rhymes (Seems like Janet and Mariah respectively overshadow him in those tracks)
- "The Next Episode" w/Dr Dre (who only raps the 2nd verse). Snoop Dogg does the 1st verse and Nate Dogg does the 3rd and final verse.
- Alicia Keys overshadows Jay-Z in "Empire State of Mind"
- Lil Jon overshadows Usher in "Yeah!!!!!!"; he also overshadows Trick Daddy and Twista in "Let's Go".
- Frontin' by Pharrell Williams feels more like "Jay-Z feat. Pharrell Williams - Frontin'"
- "Dilemma" feels more like a Kelly Rowland solo track than a Nelly track to me.
- For a more recent example, Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" w/Bruno Mars or any David Guetta song with a featuring artist (Akon, Kelly Rowland, etc).

“Mo Money Mo Problems” felt like it belonged to Diddy or Mase back then. It was too bright and flashy for a Biggie track. Mase revealed that it was originally for his debut album but he felt it should go to Biggie since he had the best verse.
In the case of “Don’t Stop”, I chalk it up to Glitter doubling as a soundtrack. Mariah takes a backseat and let the rappers shine more on some songs.
Nelly sounded like a guest on his deep cut “Playa” from the Sweat album. Mobb Deep and even Missy outshined him.

Lil Jon overshadows Usher in "Yeah!!!!!!" Agreed, and I also vote this should also be the new title of the song haha. The many exclamation points make it so much better.

Childish Gambino sounds more like a guest on this song of his, featuring Steve Glover:

- Alicia Keys overshadows Jay-Z in "Empire State of Mind" That's why she made a Part 2 of the song to get all credits for it. :kii:

Madonna on her own song "Did You Do It" though that was intentional as the instrumental and her chorus vocals are from her song "Waiting."
