Even in those areas, though it is hard to find a pure "coming from the bottom" sort of narrative. No matter how much one does oneself, one has to be noticed by the right kind of people and get the right opportunities to showcase one's abilities and get signed to the right labels and have good producers and so on.

Is “industry plant” the next Pulse obsession as a term to use against separate groups of artists to make them seem less credible? Yeah, to me it's similar to the "soccer moms" term they use to bash M5, P!nk, Kelly C, etc and it seems Dua Lipa and Lana del Rey are "plants" too according to this forum, lol. |

I definitely miss prior to 2016 when "industry plant" and "payola" weren't thrown around (90% of the time incorrectly) at every online mention of musical success.

Lana was definitely a plant - she started out kind of as an alt artist, where that 100% mattered (at least then). And she was very cleary pushing this indir, DIY image when she most definitely was a major label artist. Lana's probably my favorite artist ever (COCC is my favorite song of 2021, Born to Die is my favorite album ever), but she at least started out as a plant. Doesn't matter, though, since she makes bops.

I wish they saved more awards for tv, because I am honestly enjoying these speeches and artist/audience reactions more than most of these performances. They seem a little more organic and free in their words than most other “formal” events.

Every single time she just keeps gaining more or having almost no decline. I'm surprised if it's simply word of mouth still this late into her breakthrough.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but Good 4 U is now discounted on iTunes. Looks like Olivia's team is gunning to keep that #1. Don't think they'll succeed (I expect the inevitable Butter remixes to come as soon as tomorrow), but I respect the effort.
