Winning the first leg of PAR3 is...1. Anne-Marie's Ninjas (MoD & maine )Overall Score: 74.9 | Detour Rank: #6 | Roadblock Rank: #1Detour Results:
(Light Reflector)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I only actually learned this was a cover when it was sent in PAR2. Goes to show how iconic this version has become. The little thump thump after most lines is basically just a perfect musical sequences (9.4)District: (9.4)Leo: I think I’ve heard this previously and I can’t really remember exactly where. Nice song but I feel like something is missing here. (8.5)Wrip: This in my opinion is a defining hit from the 80s. It definitely has one of the most recognizable beats from the time, and overall it’s always great to listen to any time it comes on. (9)Overall Score: 36.3
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by James)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: The guitar riffs here, especially the main repeated one, are pretty great. The verses bring some good energy, which feeds really well into the chorus. A favorite in this set for sure, and generally just a great indie track (9.6)
District: I was surprised it had 450 million spotify streams. Shockingly I think this is a first listen. One of my favourite discoveries here. The guitar lines make the song amazing! (9.5)
Shooter: the rhythm and energy of this one remains just as infectious almost a decade later! (10)
lyhom: I should probably give tourist history a full listen some time, the stuff I've heard from it is the exact kind of early 2010s indie rock that I have a weakness over (9.5)
Overall Score: 38.6
Congrats on securing a win right off the bat! Hopefully it's a sign of things to come for you two. You'll get a +3.1 bonus next leg

Our runner-ups for this leg are...
2. Weezer (willapted33 & ramona wants sleep )Overall Score: 71.7 | Detour Rank: #3 | Roadblock Rank: #3Detour Results:
(Light Reflector)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I really like all the allusions to music and the different ways they're used in the chorus, very clever! I also really like how much of a re-imagining this is compared to the original. Instead of just doing a copy paste cover, they really take the song and make it their own, which is great to see (8.8)District: (9.1)Leo: I remember sending this song last time and none of the judges gave it what it deserves, so it’s my turn to reward such an amazing song. (9.7)Wrip: I mean, anything with Ms. Lauryn Hill on it will likely do well with me. This is one of those songs that I never really know who sang it/made it popular, so I didn’t realize this was made popular by the Fugees. Definitely a classic though. (9.1)Overall Score: 36.7
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Will)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: A great, fun, track. I love the energy of this, and everything about the song goes together really well. (9)
District: I love how fun and bouncy this is! Very catchy, I found myself singing parts of the song as I was listening to the other songs lol. (8.9)
Shooter: SOPHIE was such a talent and her loss was tragic. It’s no Ponyboy but it’s still miles ahead of whatever 100 Charli XCXs is usually trying to attempt. (9)
lyhom: I miss sophie, man (8.1)
Overall Score: 35
You two may have come second, but this is the first time that Will hasn't won the opening leg of PAR. Will this be a sign of things to come? You'll have a +2.6 bonus next leg

Claiming the last spot on the podium is...
3. The 17 Year Olds (Trilogy & woods )Overall Score: 69.9 | Detour Rank: #2 | Roadblock Rank: #11Detour Results:
(World Connector)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: Simply one of the most fun, bouncy tracks this century. It never fails to put me in a good mood (9.5)District: (9.3)Leo: The chorus of this is gold and works perfectly with the rest of the song. (9.4)Wrip: This still sounds just as good as it did when I first heard it. The production bops, and the connection between Estelle and Kanye really works here. Just love this song! (9.2)Overall Score: 37.4
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Trilogy)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: This pick just feels kinda out of left field. That's not necessarily a bad thing - I do like the song somewhat. The bridge and a lot of the instrumentation is solid, but the song feels a bit too repetitive for me overall (7.7)
District: This isn't terrible but it doesn't match up to the rest of the roadblock songs imo. (7.4)
Shooter: at least one of Gaga’s best deep cuts was chosen! It still holds up and the fact Teddy Riley produced this makes me love it even more. (10)
lyhom: not the sound I expected out of something from the fame monster, kind of digging this though (7.4)
Overall Score: 32.5
Congrats on starting the race strong with a top 3 finish! You'll get a +2.4 bonus next leg

Missing the top 3 by 0.1 points is...
4. Feeters (@chartf**ker72 & samo🦕 )Overall Score: 69.8 | Detour Rank: #4 | Roadblock Rank: #8Detour Results: (World Connector)
Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I really like this song. The beat kinda feels like it's chugging along just like the titular train, which is a nice touch (8.9)District: (9)Leo: Of the songs I didn’t know in this set, this is my favorite discovery. Great vocals and the rhythmic is amazing. (9.5)Wrip: Beautiful vocals, pleasant vibes. (9)Overall Score: 36.4
Roadblock Results: (Sent by Samo)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: For whatever reason, this hasn't been a track I revisited post-WTM, but clearly that was a mistake. I really like the feeling of utter longing that the chorus emits, and the vocal performance feels truly heartfelt. Great re-discovery (9.3)
District: This continues to grow on me every time, I love everything about it! I lose myself in the song, and that post-chorus instrumental is euphoric. (10)
Shooter: this sounded like it had the makings of a solid song but the vocal mix ruined my enjoyment. I get it; these indie alt girls can’t dare make a song that sounds too much like a “regular” Pop song but they just end up doing themselves a disservice. (5)
lyhom: one of my favourite discoveries in 2019 wtm in general (9.1)
Overall Score: 33.4

The last member of the top 5 is...
5. Mylo Shark (razorshark & Mylo13 💜 )Overall Score: 69.7 | Detour Rank: #9 | Roadblock Rank: #7Detour Results:
(Light Reflector)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: This song is nice. I feel like it's generally agreed upon as a good song. It also feels like a kinda boring choice though. I do like this song, but you coulda dug a bit deeper for something (8)District: (9.8)Leo: I lost interest in Lana since she released “West Coast”, so when I heard this, I ended really surprised. Nice cover with a summery vibe. (9.3)Wrip: While most covers sound pretty much like an exact copy of the original, Lana completely transformed “Doin’ Time” into her own song. The production here gives this an eerie vibe, perfect for Lana’s music. (8.6)Overall Score: 35.7
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Mylo)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: This was a favorite of mine back when Dedicated dropped, and it remains so two years later. I like the varied repetition in the chorus, and the vocal pattern on the bridge is really nice. Cute song! (8.9)
District: While I prefer the other Carly song on this list, this is still a bop. I enjoy her delicate and airy delivery throughout the song. (9.1)
Shooter: I forgot how much of a bop this is. The hook is such ear candy. (8)
lyhom: my opinions on the songs I've heard from dedicated have been more uneven than emotion (although it's mostly a range of "still good but a little disappointing" to "great"), this one is in the middle of those two opinions, which is to say that it's quite good lol (8)
Overall Score: 34
Despite mid-range rankings in both challenges, you two still only missed the top 3 by 0.2 points! You'll get a +2 bonus next leg

Scoring a 6th place finish is...6. Dula Peep Please Step on My Face (@jadenlefranks & HamedM1 💔 )Overall Score: 69.1 | Detour Rank: #12 | Roadblock Rank: #5Detour Results:
(World Connector)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I've always wished this one connected with me more than it did. The writing is certainly great, but the song overall doesn't click with me the same way other songs from Folklore do. Still very good though (8.2)District: (10)Leo: My favorite from folklore, the storytelling is top notch. (9.3)Wrip: “dynasty” is one of those songs that I respect more than I actually enjoy. It isn’t exactly my favorite on Folklore, but it’s a fine song. I kind of wish there was just a bit more going on for me to click with it more though. (7.4)Overall Score: 34.9 Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Hamed)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I really like the way the sound is done on this song, between the growling voice in the background and the "shaky" vocals, it does feel like someone is trying to perform some spell to wake a witch or something! (8.5)
District: one of the first listens on the roadblock list for me. I enjoyed how "out there" it was, but I don't see myself coming back to it a lot. (7.9)
Shooter: Queen Kate can do no wrong and I applaud submitting one of the more unconventional choices here. (10)
lyhom: I know way less kate bush than I should probably know lol. this was really interesting (7.8)
Overall Score: 34.2
You two managed to kick off the race with a strong finish. You'll get a +1.8 bonus next leg

7. Team Don't Lecture Me Obi-Wan... (filthy & tanooki )Overall Score: 68.9 | Detour Rank: #5 | Roadblock Rank: #10Detour Results: (Light Reflector) Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I remember thinking this was only okay in whichever madness it was in, which terrible take by me, this song is great! The instrumentation is both chill and complex, and Lianne La Havas sounds fantastic over it (9)District: (8.7)Leo: I’m not that crazy on Lianne as a lot of people on Pulse are with. This song is good, I particularly like the backing vocals in the chorus, really elevate the song. (8.8)Wrip: Lianne’s self-titled album is easily one of the best albums of 2020. I enjoy every song on it, but Weird Fishes has been my absolute favorite. She transformed a great song into something even better in my opinion, giving stellar vocals, beautiful instrumentation, and overall just a heavenly song. (9.8)Overall Score: 36.3
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Filthy)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: Weyes Blood never fails to deliver on sweet calming guitar-rooted tracks. This is one of my favorites I've heard from the album (which I really need to give a spin) (9)
District: This was actually a first listen as well. I've only listened to half of the album but I'd put this at 3rd after Andromeda and Something To Believe from what I've listened to. I really enjoy her vocal agility throughout this album, and the harmonies here were really nice. (9)
Shooter: can’t say I’ve been a big fan of Weyes' music in the past but this was a rather soothing listen. (7)
lyhom: nothing from weyes blood has really clicked with me yet even though it probably should, but I've been getting more into some songs with sparse chamber-y production so I should probably revisit some of her stuff (7.6)
Overall Score: 32.6

Falling in the middle of the pack is...8. No No Drama (Enyasurvivor & shruggie )Overall Score: 68.8 | Detour Rank: #7 | Roadblock Rank: #9Detour Results:
(Light Reflector)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I do much prefer the '68 Version which was taken off Spotify, but this version still works really well. This version brings some some really fun energy, and makes for just an overall solid listen (9.2)District: (8.9)Leo: I’ve been watching some episodes of “The Voice” and this might be one of the most overused songs in the show. But the moment it starts playing, I want to dance to this. (9.3)Wrip: I low key thought that Amy was the original singer of this lol. This is a jam though. (8.7)Overall Score: 36.1
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Enya)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: This is such a genuinely pleasant, calm song. The lyrics about the summer slipping away all too fast connects (probably too well?) for me. I especially like when the song speeds up a bit about half way through, before slowing down again - feels like the summer months rolling by! Possibly my favorite on folklore and one of my favorites in the set (9.3)
District: a folklore standout for me, albeit obvious. I enjoyed this more when folklore came out as it was one of the first songs that clicked for me, but I still enjoy this very much. I love the playfulness of the song with its happy sound and innocent lines. (9.7)
Shooter: yay. A Taylor song. Just what this challenge was missing. (6)
lyhom: most of the songs I've heard from folklore have been pretty good, this included (7.7)
Overall Score: 32.7
Finishing just in the top half isn't too bad of a way to start out! You'll get a +1.4 bonus next leg

The first team in the bottom half is...
9. The Invisible Hand (Red & Sambalada )Overall Score: 68.5 | Detour Rank: #15 | Roadblock Rank: #2Detour Results:
(Light Reflector)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: This is such a sweet song. The laid back instrumentation fits very well with Fiona Apple's vocals. I don't have a ton to say about this one, it's just a very good listen (9)District: (8.6)Leo: I think Fiona has a nice voice; the instrumentation is also nice. Overall, this song was a little boring for me. (7.5)Wrip: This is a nice cover, I really enjoy Fiona’s voice in this. Not a whole lot for me to say but it’s pretty solid. (8.4)Overall Score: 33.5
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Samba)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: Maybe a top 5 track for me on Emotion? Regardless, I really dig this one. It's got a nice poppy chorus with a good build up beforehand (especially post-bridge). Solid lyrics combine with all that for a really enjoyable song (9.6)
District: This is one of my favourite CRJ songs. I fell in love with its earnest lyrics and the vulnerability in professing love for someone who doesn't love you back. (10)
Shooter: of course we get two Carly songs. Good thing this is also another bop. (7)
lyhom: I looked over this way too much when I was first getting into emotion (8.4)
Overall Score: 35
