Much like I had done for the 1983 Mainstream Rock rankdown I am going to try and highlight the most noteworthy extras during the rankdown itself. Since there are so many of them left though, I will be posting a significant portion of the extras beforehand. There's not too much to say about this first set although it does include the title track from .38 Special's 4th studio album. YE Rank | Artist - Song | Peak | Weeks | Points | Video | 280. | .38 Special - Wild-Eyed Southern Boys | - | - | 29 | Link | 363. | 707 - Live with the Girl | - | - | 1 | Link | 337. | 707 - Tonite's Your Nite | - | - | 5 | Link | 258. | Adam and the Ants - Physical (You're So) | 19 | 1 | 42 | Link | 244. | The Alan Parsons Project - Snake Eyes
| 47 | 1 | 53 | Link | 137. | The Alvin Lee Band - Ridin' Truckin'
| - | - | 246 | Link |
Wild Eye Southern Boys not making the Top 100 year end is nothing short of sacrilegious - at least where from where I come from (Indiana). Between that and Hold on Loosely, I can't tell you how many times I have heard these songs in my life. Tens of thousands, I'd swear.

"Be True" was the B-side to "Fade Away" and was left off of The River. The other 2 Springsteen songs here are on that album though. You might be familiar with another tune by the Bus Boys, "The Boys Are Back in Town", which was featured in the action comedy film 48 Hrs. Also included in this set is a live cover of the Lynyrd Skynyrd hit song. YE Rank | Artist - Song | Peak | Weeks | Points | Video | 307. | Bruce Springsteen - Be True | 42 | 1 | 19 | Link | 308. | Bruce Springsteen - I'm a Rocker | 42 | 1 | 19 | Link | 241. | Bruce Springsteen - The Ties That Bind
| 2 | 1 | 59 | Link
| 327. | The Bus Boys - Johnny Soul'd Out | 49 | 2 | 12 | Link | 218. | The Cars - Don't Tell Me No
| 9 | 6 | 83 | Link | 317. | The Charlie Daniels Band - Sweet Home Alabama (Live) | 52 | 3 | 16 | Link |

I was unable to find an audio link anywhere online for "Dream Life" but the song is from the Brains' album Electronic Eden. This is the band that wrote and originally performed Money Changes Everything, made famous by Cyndi Lauper

Being a Fan of Classic Rock myself there are so many timeless classics on this 1981 Year-End list, From Journey's "Don't Stop Belivin'" my favorite rock song of the 1980's hands down, To Stevie Nicks with "Edge of Seventeen" there is literally nothing as good as Classic Rock. Personally the Power Ballads are my favorite as those songs really were just incredible, You just don't hear these kinds of Romantic Love Songs on the Mainstream today.

Heart, John Mellencamp , Police, and especially " Treat Me Right" would all make my top half. In fact I would give "Treat Me Right" a top 30 rank. Higher than her other songs appearing here. Treat Me Right and Hell Is For Children are my two choice tracks off of Crimes of Passion.

Love these extras. I didn’t know Heart’s cover of Rock N Roll charted - I thought it wasn’t released. I don’t suppose any of their Bebe Le Strange songs show up anywhere..

Today's final set features the Steve Miller Band guitarist Les Dudek along with some southern rock by the Marshall Tucker Band. "Rock and Roll Doctor" is an alternate version of the song originally recorded for Little Feat's 1974 album Feats Don't Fail Me Now. Also being remade is "Rattlesnake Shake" which was from Fleetwood Mac's 1969 album Then Play On. Once again, I was unable to find audio for one of the songs here, but the track is off of the Brooklyn singer/songwriter's self-titled album. YE Rank | Artist - Song | Peak | Weeks | Points | Video | 300. | Les Dudek - Déjà Vu (Da Voodoo's in You) | 52 | 3 | 22 | Link | 205. | Little Feat - Rock and Roll Doctor | 34 | 10 | 102 | Link | 366. | Louise Goffin - If You Ever Did Believe | 60 | 1 | 1 | Nope

the vast majority of this year's mainstream rock extras aren't really my cup of tea...but, as always, it's great to see detailed documentation of all of the songs played on rock radio back in the day

This next set features a song from the San Francisco based country rock band New Riders of the Purple Sage, whose original lineup was composed of several members from the Grateful Dead. There are also 4 songs from the pop singer Nicolette Larson's 3rd studio album Radioland, none of which charted on the Hot 100. "Love on the Airwaves" was a minor Hot 100 hit though peaking at #87 for the short-lived rock band Night. Next up we have a cover of the reggae song "New Age Music" only recently released by Inner Circle in 1980. There's also a song from the American blues singer Paul Butterfield as well as a track from vocalist Pearl E. Gates who was notably married to the Clash bassist Paul Simonon along with fronting the band Pearl Harbor and the Explosions. I'm guessing that the version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" that charted was a duet Townshend did with classical guitarist John Williams for The Secret Policeman's Ball which benefitted Amnesty International. ...And finally "Behind the Lines" was a re-recording of the Genesis song from their 1980 album Duke. YE Rank | Artist - Song | Peak | Weeks | Points | Video | 201. | Pat Benatar - Take It Any Way You Want It | 32 | 10 | 110 | Link | 236. | Pat Travers - New Age Music | 33 | 3 | 64 | Link | 368. | Paul Butterfield - Footprints on the Windshield Upside Down | 60 | 1 | 1 | Link | 358. | Pearl Harbour - Everybody's Boring But My Baby | 59 | 1 | 2 | Link | 231. | Pete Townshend - Won't Get Fooled Again (Live) | 39 | 5 | 68 | Link | 355. | Phil Collins - Behind the Lines | 58 | 1 | 3 | Link | 285. | The Plimsouls - Now | 47 | 2 | 27 | Link |

The following set includes a track from Poco's 13th studio album Blue and Gray, an album which was themed upon the American Civil War. "The Hero" was the closing track from Queen's soundtrack album Flash Gordon. There are a pair of songs from Pirates, the second album of the Chicago-born singer Rickie Lee Jones. If you're looking for more female vocals you can also check out the song "Send Me an Angel". Also in this set is a song from the Detroit based band The Rockets who are most famous for their cover of the Fleetwood Mac song "Oh Well". YE Rank | Artist - Song | Peak | Weeks | Points | Video | 146. | Poco - Widowmaker | 33 | 13 | 215 | Link | 211. | Point Blank - Let Me Stay with You Tonight | 38 | 7 | 91 | Link | 331. | Queen - The Hero | 56 | 2 | 10 | Link | 222. | Rickie Lee Jones - Pirates (So Long Lonely Avenue) | 40 | 8 | 78 | Link | 181. | Rickie Lee Jones - Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking | 31 | 11 | 130 | Link | 333. | Robin Lane and the Chartbusters - Send Me an Angel | 53 | 1 | 8 | Link | 270. | The Rockets - I Can't Get Satisfied | 42 | 3 | 34 | Link |

I'll try to post the last of this year's pre-rankdown extras this weekend. The Rossington Collins band were a southern rock band made up of several surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd following the plane crash of 1977. However, the band recruited a female lead vocalist in Dale Krantz. This set also includes a song from the appraised guitar player and blues musician Roy Buchanan. We saw Ry Cooder before in the mainstream rock rankdowns as he was a founding member of the band Little Village which we ranked in 1992 ("She Runs Hot"). There's also the English rock band the Searchers who covered the Ducks Deluxe song "Love's Melody" (1974). And wrapping up this set is some power pop from the Illinois-based band Shoes. YE Rank | Artist - Song | Peak | Weeks | Points | Video | 305. | Rossington Collins Band - Gotta Get It Straight | 50 | 3 | 20 | Link | 362. | Roy Buchanan - My Babe | 60 | 2 | 2 | Link | 359. | Ry Cooder - Crazy 'Bout an Automobile (Every Woman I Know) | 59 | 1 | 2 | Link | 282. | Santana - Changes | 45 | 3 | 28 | Link | 140. | Santana - Searchin' | 26 | 12 | 236 | Link | 371. | The Searchers - Love's Melody | 60 | 1 | 1 | Link | 344. | Shoes - She Satisfies | 58 | 2 | 5 | Link |
