All of us know how overplayed songs that CHR stations have in power rotation can be, to the point where they're being played every hour. There have been a couple times where my CHR station has played the same song twice within a ridiculously short period of time, like less than an hour apart, and I've noticed it quite a bit more lately. I assume it's accidental because they are playing the song every hour, and just chose to play the song late in one hour and then early in the next, but does anyone else have any examples of ridiculously short periods of time between your CHR station playing the same song?
I'm sure there are probably lots of examples, but these are the few I wrote down just because they were so ridiculously close:
Harry Styles - As It Was - 8:18pm & 8:58pm (40 minutes apart)
Justin Bieber, Daniel Caesar & Giveon - Peaches - 4:33pm & 5:12pm (39 minutes apart) Morgan Wallen - Thinkin' Bout Me - 12:49pm & 1:28pm (39 minutes apart, 4/15/24) Meghan Trainor - Mother - 10:25pm & 11:03pm (38 minutes apart) SZA - Kill Bill - 11:24am & 12:00pm (36 minutes apart) Shaed - Trampoline - 9:18pm & 9:52pm (34 minutes apart) Post Malone - Better Now - 12:25pm & 12:59pm (34 minutes apart) {Particularly notable/odd since this was in 2022} Olivia Rodrigo - Deja Vu - 8:40pm & 9:13pm (33 minutes apart) Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather - 12:53pm & 1:24pm (33 minutes apart) Kid Laroi - Without You - 8:28pm & 9:00pm (32 minutes apart) Luke Combs - Fast Car - 11:30am & 12:01pm (31 minutes apart) Doja Cat - Paint the Town Red - 11:30am & 12:01pm (31 minutes apart) Tate McRae - Greedy - 11:31am & 12:01pm (30 minutes apart, 4/17/24) The Weeknd & Jennie - One of the Girls - 10:54pm & 11:24pm (30 minutes apart, 2/26/24) Megan Thee Stallion - Savage - 4:25pm & 4:55pm (30 minutes apart)
Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever - 11:35am & 12:03pm (28 minutes apart) Morgan Wallen - Last Night - 11:30am & 11:58am (28 minutes apart) Ariana Grande - Yes, And? - 7:50pm & 8:17pm (27 minutes apart, 2/26/24) Anitta & DaBaby - Girl From Rio [Remix] - 7:55pm & 8:20pm (25 minutes apart) Djo - End of Beginning - 7:36pm & 7:57pm (21 minutes apart, 3/19/24) Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer - 11:59am & 12.19pm (20 minutes apart)
Miley Cyrus - Flowers - 12:04pm & 12:23pm (19 minutes apart) Lil Nas X - That's What I Want - 11:37am & 11:53am (16 minutes apart, 12/23/21) Metro Boomin' feat. The Weeknd & 21 Savage - Creepin' - 11:58am & 12:08pm (10 minutes apart)
Steve Lacy - Bad Habit - 11:59am & 12:08pm (9 minutes apart, 1/15/23) David Guetta & Bebe Rexha - I'm Good - 11:53am & 12:00pm (7 minutes apart, 2/19/23) Miguel - Sure Thing - 10:02am & 10:06am (4 minutes apart, played twice back-to-back, 5/27/23) Rema & Selena Gomez - Calm Down - 12:35pm & 12:38pm (3 minutes apart, played twice back-to-back, 9/17/23) Tate McRae - Greedy - 11:58am & 12:00pm (2 minutes apart, played twice-back-to-back, 1/28/24)

I once heard Y100 play Eminem's "Lose Yourself" 3 times in an 80 minute period.

Of course, sometimes those close spaces between hearing the same songs can be the result of different shows from different hosts and sources. Like the local DJ's might play something, and then Ryan Seacrest, Elvis Duran, or some other nationally syndicated show starts and airs the same song soon after. It's not uncommon for a song ranked high on American Top 40, the iHeart countdown, or similar show to be played by the individual affiliate just after the countdown ends.

I have sometimes heard songs repeated literally back to back (or only separated by a commercial buffer) because of this, lol. I don't know if this would ever happen with a CHR station, but I do also remember back in the 2000s there was an urban radio morning show here that purposely played songs two or three times in a row every once in a while because the artist/song was hot and they knew the audience wouldn't be bothered by it. I have also heard of stations stunt broadcasting when they switch formats by playing one song on loop for a day or two. The song in question doesn't always relate to the old or new format.

Likewise, there's got to be an instance of some CHR station world premiering a song and playing it a second time immediately afterwards or separated by an interview with the artist. Other genre format stations did that occasionally, particularly alternative and especially in the 2000s.

When Y100 temporarily moved AT40 to Sunday evenings back in the day, after the show ended they would replay the top 10 in order.

Not my station, or CHR, but in April 2006, the world premiere of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ newest single “Dani California” consisted of KTBZ-FM DJ Don Jantzen playing the track continuously for the entirety of his three-hour program. I’m curious if a CHR has done anything like that before.

I’m curious if a CHR has done anything like that before. I know of a CHR station (idk which) that played Rebecca Black's "Friday" over and over for a full hour on April Fool's Day one year, and I believe a different year that same station played Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" on repeat for the entire morning show on April Fools' Day. This one's not as comparable, but for my CHR's "daily top 5" countdown, they jokingly had Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber's "I Don't Care" as all five positions on the countdown on the day it came out.

I have sometimes heard songs repeated literally back to back (or only separated by a commercial buffer) because of this, lol. That happened a lot back in the day on Radio Disney. I remember that at least once when Oops!...I Did It Again was #1 on the Countdown and was played again at the top of the 6pm PT hour, and it happened twice with Love Story as well... KDIS AM1110 Los Angeles Taylor Swift - Love Story - Sunday, January 4, 2009 1:52pm & 2:00pm ET (4-minute commercial in between) Taylor Swift - Love Story - Saturday, January 10, 2009 9:52am & 10:00am ET (4-minute commercial in between) Wait, I have more. Love Story was #1 on the Dot Com Top 3 and later played at its scheduled slot on the rotation: Taylor Swift - Love Story - Tuesday, December 2, 2009 6:40pm & 7:07pm ET (27 minutes between, start to start)

This happened this past Sunday on KIIS-FM, when Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More” played twice in a row, after being the number one song on the iHeartCountdown, and then playing again after the station ID and the intro to On The Move with Enrique Santos.

Bumping an old thread with a tangential example, but this Sunday, my CHR played three Doja Cat songs in a span of 12 minutes. "I Like You" and "Vegas" played as #2 and #1 on AT40, and it was only separated by one song before they resumed regular programming and played Saweetie's "Best Friend," which Doja is featured on.

An example from my CHR:
Steve Lacy - Bad Habit - 6:49pm & 7:09pm (20 minutes apart)

They played "I'm Good" at 11:53am as #2 for AT40, "Die for You" was in between as #1, and then they played "I'm Good" again right at noon when they switched back to normal formatting (which was only 7 minutes apart from the last time they played it).

This happened again this morning on my station, ironically in the exact same scenario. Miguel's "Sure Thing" was #1 on the iHeartRadio Countdown, then when they shifted to On the Move with Enrique Santos, they immediately replayed "Sure Thing" again, meaning it was played twice in a row.

I saw this on my station's playlist on AllAccess yesterday and thought it was really weird. For some reason, they played Dua Lipa's "Dance the Night" three times in the span of 42 minutes, two of those times being within 7 minutes of each other.

My local country station played “Light on in the kitchen” twice within 10 minutes due to one of the plays being on the Iheart Woman Of Country program and the other 1 song before.

Oh I have got all of you beat! My local CHR from my hometown once played a song on repeat for an hour and a half. Yes, the same song. alchetron.com/KTXYI still remember my ride to school that morning. "Wow, wasn't that a great song! You know what we should play now? How about 'Friday' by Rebecca Black!" It was amazing.

I have looked at playlists for leading CHR radio stations and I seen songs with 120 to 130 spins a week. That is almost that song once an hour every hour of the week.

I bet many CHR #1s have even exceeded that spin count per week. Outside of stunts or countdowns switching over to regular programming and things like that, that shouldn't make it too unusual for the top songs to be played twice or sometimes even three times within the same hour (that's certainly been my impression listening to CHR regularly for many years).

This afternoon, my CHR played Rema & Selena Gomez's "Calm Down" back to back during normal programming. They played it once, then the song restarted and played again in full. I'm presuming it was an accident since there was no station bumper or anything in between; the song just restarted as if it was playing on loop. Still interesting though.

I listened to a stream from Madison Wisconsin where they played the same Bruno Mars song twice in fifteen minutes.

And I see they played Morgan Wallen twice and Taylor Swift twice (although different songs) in the same 42-minute period. Mixing it up is not exactly that station's strong suit.

My CHR played Tate McRae's "Greedy" twice in a row today without a commercial break in between. It was played as the #1 song of AT40 at 11:58am, and then was immediately played again 2 minutes later when regular programming resumed at 12:00pm.
