Polo G Lands First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With ‘Hall of Fame’ 6/20/2021 by Keith CaulfieldPlus: Migos, TWICE and Maroon 5 debut in top 10, while Bo Burnham’s “Inside (The Songs)” jumps 116-7. Polo G lands his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as Hall of Fame opens atop the tally, earning 143,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending June 17, according to MRC Data. All three of the rapper’s charting albums have reached the top 10. The 20-track Hall of Fame, released on June 11 via Columbia Records, contains Polo G’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, “Rapstar,” which spent two weeks at No. 1 (April 24 and May 1, 2021-dated charts). The album also boasts guests such as The Kid LAROI, Lil Durk, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Roddy Ricch, Pop Smoke, Rod Wave and Young Thug. Hall of Fame leads a busy week in the top 10 on the Billboard 200, as Migos’ Culture III starts at No. 2, TWICE’s Taste of Love debuts at No. 6, Bo Burnham’s Inside (The Songs) jumps 116-7 after its first full tracking week of activity, and Maroon 5’s Jordi bows at No. 8. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new June 26, 2021-dated chart (where Hall of Fame debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on June 22. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Hall of Fame’s 143,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending June 17, SEA units comprise 124,000 (equaling 181.9 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), album sales comprise 18,000 (aided in part by deep discounting of the set at digital retail for a portion of the week) and TEA units comprise a little over 1,000. Polo G previously hit the top 10 with The Goat (No. 2 in 2020) and Die a Legend (No. 6 in 2019). Rap trio Migos debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with Culture III, earning 130,500 equivalent album units. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 106,000 (equaling 144.57 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), album sales comprise 22,500 and TEA units comprise nearly 2,000. Culture III was initially released on June 11 as a 19-track album, but was bolstered be a deluxe edition release on June 17 that added five extra tracks. Like Polo G’s Hall of Fame, Culture III was also deeply discounted at digital retail for a portion of the tracking week. Culture III and Hall of Fame have the second-and-third-biggest sales weeks (22,500 and 18,000) for hip-hop albums in 2021, trailing only the debut frame of J. Cole’s The Off-Season (37,000; May 29-dated chart). Culture III is Migos’ third album to reach the top two on the Billboard 200, following Culture and Culture II (both No. 1, in 2017 and 2018, respectively). A trio of former No. 1 albums lines up next on the new Billboard 200: Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour falls 2-3 (122,000 equivalent album units earned; down 15%), Lil Durk and Lil Baby’s The Voice of the Heroes dips 1-4 in its second week (73,000 units; down 52%) and Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album descends 3-5 (50,000 units; down less than 1%). K-pop girl group TWICE debuts at No. 6 with Taste of Love, with 46,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 43,000 (making it the top selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 3,000 (equaling 5.09 million on-demand streams of the album’s six tracks) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. Like many K-pop releases, the CD edition of the album was issued in multiple collectible packages (four, including a Target-exclusive edition), each with assorted internal paper goods and randomized elements. Of the album’s 43,000 copies sold, the CD editions combined sold 39,000. The rest of the sales came from the album’s digital download. Taste of Love is the first top 10 for the nine-member act. Bo Burnham’s Inside (The Songs) jumps from No. 116 to No. 7 after its first full tracking week of activity, earning 37,000 equivalent album units (up 330%). Of that sum, SEA units comprise 33,000 (equaling 44.71 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), album sales comprise 3,000 and TEA units comprise less than 1,000. The album bowed on the list a week ago after one day of activity, as it was released on Thursday (June 10), the final day of that chart’s tracking week. Inside (The Songs) is the companion album to Burnham’s Netflix special Bo Burnham: Inside, which premiered on May 30. Inside (The Songs) is categorized as a comedy album and is the first such album to reach the top 10 on the Billboard 200 since the chart dated Aug. 22, 2015, when Lil Dicky’s Professional Rapper debuted and peaked at No. 7. Maroon 5’s new album Jordi debuts at No. 8, marking the seventh top 10 effort for the group. It bows with 37,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 20,000 (equaling 27.64 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), album sales comprise 15,000 and TEA units comprise 2,000. All seven of Maroon 5’s full-length studio albums have reached the top 10, stretching back to the act’s debut, Songs About Jane, which peaked at No. 6 in 2004. Rounding out the new top 10 are two former No. 1s: Moneybagg Yo’s A Gangsta’s Pain, which falls 6-9 with 34,000 equivalent album units earned (down 11%), and J. Cole’s The Off-Season, slipping 4-10 with just under 34,000 units (down 22%).

Too bad Mammoth WVH's album didn't manage to debut in the top 10. It was definitely the most competitive week in a while.

^I guess some of those lower debuts reflect Record Store Day sales.

Record Store Day really cleaned up the Vinyl Sales chart this week.
By Keith Caulfield 6/22/2021
Plus: The U.S.' top-selling Record Store Day-exclusive albums and singles at independent record stores.
Record Store Day 2021’s first drop, held on June 12, helped sell 1.546 million vinyl albums in the U.S. in the week ending June 17, according to MRC Data. That’s a record for a Record Store Day week and the second-largest week for vinyl album sales since MRC Data began electronically tracking sales in 1991. The only larger week for vinyl album sales since 1991 came in the week ending Dec. 24, 2020, with 1.841 million sold.
Further, with 1.209 million vinyl albums sold at independent record stores in the week ending June 17, that marks the largest week ever for the format at the indie sector in MRC Data history. It surpasses the previous MRC Data-era high for weekly vinyl LP sales at indies: 733,000 sold in the week ending Dec. 24, 2020.
Record Store Day, the annual indie music retailer celebration, is being staged over two days in 2021 -- June 12 and July 17 -- owed to complications caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Traditionally, Record Store Day is held on one Saturday in the springtime. In 2019, it was held on April 13. In 2020, Record Store Day was meant to be held on April 18, but was split into three separate drops: Aug. 26, Sept. 26 and Oct. 24.
Record Store Day 2021 Boasts Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Prince & More Exclusive Titles
Per usual, many albums were released specifically for Record Store Day 2021’s first drop -- including those on unique color vinyl variants, one-off pressings, hard-to-find archival projects and reissues of classic and niche albums. (See lists, below, for the week's top-selling Record Store Day-exclusive releases.) Among those that were released on June 12: the first vinyl pressing of Prince’s rare album The Truth, the vinyl debut of Rage Against the Machine’s The Battle of Mexico City live album, a translucent yellow vinyl pressing of Lady Gaga’s Chromatica album, and the CD and vinyl LP debut of Ariana Grande’s live album k bye for now (swt live).
Here are some facts on Record Store Day 2021’s first drop and its impact, plus a look at the top 25-selling Record Store Day-exclusive albums and singles:
All data is for the week ending June 17, 2021, in the U.S., according to MRC Data.
Total album sales across all formats (physical [including CD, vinyl, cassette, etc.] and digital downloads): 3.029 million -- up 61.4% compared to previous week (1.877 million). That’s the largest week for album sales in 2021, and the biggest week since 4.165 million albums were sold in the week ending Dec. 24, 2020.
Physical album sales (CD, vinyl, cassette, etc.): 2.521 million -- up 77.1% compared to previous week (1.423 million). It’s the largest sales week for physical albums since the week ending Dec. 24, 2020, when 3.523 million were sold.
CD album sales: 962,000 -- up 34.2% compared to previous week (717,000). It’s the biggest week for CD album sales since, again, the week ending Dec. 24, 2020, when 1.671 million were sold.
Foo Fighters Announce Bee Gees Tribute Album for Record Store Day 2021
Vinyl album sales: 1.546 million -- up 121.6% compared to previous week (698,000). That’s the second-largest week for vinyl album sales since MRC Data began tracking sales in 1991. The only larger week for vinyl album sales came in week ending Dec. 24, 2020, with 1.841 million sold.
51% of all albums sold in the U.S. in the week ending June 17 were vinyl albums (1.546 million of 3.029 million).
61% of all physical albums sold in the U.S. in the week ending June 17 were vinyl albums (1.546 million of 2.521 million).

Crazy how Vinyl is completely overtaking all other forms of pure sales at this point.
I guess in the 2020s Vinyls will be the main selling point for music. Vinyl droppings/releases will be treated just as important as the album's original drop for many artists -- the PR for Evermore's Vinyl release says it all.
Not to mention many artists will probably start planning months ahead big Vinyl drops during the release week for an album to boost opening numbers substancially.

Very happy to see Prince at the top of the RSD list, especially with one of his least commercial albums.

That has to be the most debuts on the Sales chart since it the Billboard 200 incorporated streams. That’s insane.

Anyone notice they've changed some of the final positions? Like I noticed Prince's "The Truth" now debuts at #64 instead of #71, and "Purple Rain" falls to #150 instead of moving up to #133. RATM debates at #70 instead of #72.

^I did notice they took down the refreshed chart earlier in the day. So, the changes are probably why.

This is in the middle of a production shortage as well. These labels need to invest in building new manufacturing plants, clearly the demand for vinyls is incredibly high but the means of producing them are still where they were five years ago when they were much more niche. The demand will only get bigger from here so hopefully they're able to find a way to get them made in a more timely manner.

TWICE's 'Taste of Love' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Album Sales Chart By Keith Caulfield 6/23/2021 Click to copy www.billboard.com/articles/news/9591408/twice-taste-of-love-top-album-sales-chart/
K-pop girl group TWICE scores its first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated June 26) as Taste of Love launches with 43,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending June 17, according to MRC Data. It’s a record sales week for the nine-member act, and first top 10 for the group. TWICE replaces another K-pop act at No. 1, as Tomorrow x Together’s The Chaos Chapter: Freeze, falls 1-9 in its second week with 14,000 sold (down 65%). The last time two K-pop acts went back-to-back at No. 1 was when Blackpink’s The Album debuted at No. 1 on the Oct. 17, 2020-dated chart, one week after SuperM’s Super One: The 1st Album bowed atop the list (dated Oct. 10). Also on the new Top Album Sales chart, efforts from Mammoth WVH, Migos, Polo G, Garbage, Maroon 5 and Prince debut in the top 10. 20 Questions With TWICE: K-Pop Group Discusses New Project ’Taste of Love’ Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now MRC Data. Pure album sales were the measurement solely utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Mammoth WVH’s self-titled album (the solo debut from Wolfgang Van Halen) bows at No. 2 with 30,000 copies sold in the week ending June 17. Of that sum, CD album sales comprise 12,000, digital album sales comprise 11,000 and vinyl LP sales comprise 7,000. Mammoth WVH also arrives at No. 1 on Independent Albums, Top Rock Albums and Hard Rock Albums. A pair of hip-hop albums are next up on Top Album Sales, as Migos’ Culture III and Polo G’s Hall of Fame debuts at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. Culture III sold 23,000 copies while Hall of Fame sold 18,000. Neither album was available in a physical format, only as digital downloads. Both also had their first-week sales aided by deep discounting at digital retailers for a portion of the week. Hall of Fame also starts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Rap Albums charts. Rock band Garbage returns with its highest charting effort in over 15 years on Top Album Sales, as No Gods No Masters debuts at No. 5. The set, which is the group’s first new studio album since 2016, bows with 16,000 copies sold. Garbage has only gone higher on Top Album Sales with 2005’s Bleed Like Me, which debuted and peaked at No. 4 on the April 30, 2005-dated chart. No Gods No Masters additionally launches in the top five on Independent Albums, Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums. Olivia Rodrigo’s former No. 1 Sour dips 4-6 with nearly 16,000 copies sold (up 21%) while Taylor Swift’s previous leader Evermore falls 1-7 with 15,000 (down 33%). Maroon 5’s new studio album Jordi bows at No. 8 on Top Album Sales with nearly 15,000 sold. All seven of the group’s full-length studio albums have reached the top 10 on the tally. In total, Maroon 5 has notched a dozen charting entries on Top Album Sales. Prince closes out the top 10, as his Record Store Day-exclusive title, the first vinyl pressing of the rare album The Truth, debuts at No. 10 with 13,000 copies sold.
