re: Laufey — is she even remotely close to R&B? I think I could have ranked it a bit higher outside of this context, but it felt out of place here and stuck out like a sore thumb to me. she was serving Clairo-Mitski-Eilish vibes, which isn't really my cup of tea most of the time.

I discovered the song on an “urban” playlist and I can definitely hear the R&B influence even if it isn’t a pure R&B song. On that same note, Khalid’s record doesn’t strike me as R&B either but that’s how it was initially classified on DSPs and I saw it placed on several “urban” playlists as well. So this was me being inclusive by including them both. 🙃

Laufey fuses Jazz and Neo-soul. She's more in the line with Esperanza Spalding and Corinne Bailey Rae. Not the chart-topping type of R&B, but it has been an integral part of the genre.

I haven't checked her catalog but I guess that's what rateyourmusic means by "Jazz Pop, Bedroom Pop, Singer-Songwriter" as her genres. they also classified this song as "Singer-Songwriter, Bedroom Pop." she doesn't strike me as neo-soul (not from this song anyway) but I can hear the jazz fusion influence for sure.

Aliah Sheffield wrote Earth Is Ghetto in just about half-an-hour during the start of pandemic lockdowns and uploaded it as an acoustic performance to her YouTube channel in December 2020; the clip quickly went viral and earned millions of impressions on Instagram and TikTok.
