Now, back to the regularly scheduled BTS/Olivia Rodrigo discussion. Nah, that argument has become old and stale also. A more interesting discussion is whether Billboard needs to change the weight distribution of its Hot 100 formula. Particularly adding back UGC and downweighing sales to make it more difficult for artists to use website sales (Travis Scott) to get dubious one-week #1 debuts or stans from mass buying (BTS) to steal extra weeks at #1.

While I concur that the sales system is badly in need of tweaks (pricing tiers, formula weight, making the bulk limit per version 1, making the bulk limit in total 4 as opposed to 4 per version), I canβt get behind bringing UGC back. I think Billboard noticed that the Song UGC videos, namely fan lyric videos, were getting cut to ribbons in vetting and not actually contributing much except in rare cases. As to Non-Song UGC, I think itβs pretty self evident why those shouldnβt come back: Harlem Shake is the prime example of why a song only ever consumed as a fragment shouldnβt have that success directly translate to the charts.

There's a fundamental difference between BTS' huge sales and Aaron Lewis' sales windfall; that being, I can legitimately believe 50k people actually bought the song. Those people are trashy af, but the sales are legitimate. BTS on the other hand, we already have the evidence that tells us it's a MUCH smaller group than 50k buying exceedingly excessively copies of their music week in and week out.
Sales themselves aren't the problem. It's the asshats aping the system.
Honestly? I think there is more value to sales in recent times. Sure, they're in the toilet as a whole but the fact that there are still people out there willing to offer up their coin to buy music deserves to be reflected. Especially if/when artists offer up actual physical product. So I hate reading arguments that sales should be removed (they shouldn't) or that they should be weighed less (they shouldn't). I'm not advocating for sales to weigh more either, just leave them tf alone as they are and address the mass-buying scam loophole instead (which is, y'know the actual problem with sales).

I had not thought about the last paragraph but it's a good point. I just think it'd be hard to enforce a rule that can erase the mass buying impact without negating legitimate sales... maybe audit harder? And one copy per credit card. One copy of the song, not one copy of each version. Otherwise instead of 60 versions of "Butter" we'll get 600.

Swedish House Mafia is supposedly releasing their comeback this Friday It's always interesting to me knowing that their first actual mainstream hit (Don't You Worry Child) was supposed to be their farewell song.

Swedish House Mafia is supposedly releasing their comeback this Friday It's always interesting to me knowing that their first actual mainstream hit (Don't You Worry Child) was supposed to be their farewell song. *biggest hit and their only hit (and charting single) in the U.S. But it's not their first mainstream hit. According to my friend in Europe, this was their first big hit Miami 2 Ibiza, Save the World, and Greyhound were also big international hits.

Apparently Normani is coming Friday (feat Cardi B), Pop Smoke album will also have Cardi and Dua(?), John Mayer is also Friday but likely won't have much impact

Whoβs releasing this Friday? Shakira! Not that Iβm expecting a chart impact but Iβm personally excited. It's in English so it will probably at least impact the Hot 100! "Chantaje" had a respectable run and that was a Spanish song with no US push.
