I'm kinda surprised we didn't Gary Numan until this year(unless he was somewhere else before I joined these) and it's sad that we won't get to rank "Are Friends Electric" Gary Was bigger in the U.K. "Metal" and "Complex" were also hits. He also scored top 20 hits from his follw up album with "We Are Glass" and "This Wreckage" All in the U.K. of course. Check out "Metal" it's like "Cars" part II

And I know he was a big thing in the UK, but we also kept ranking later Split Enz songs and their biggest hit in the US was not nearly as big as Cars. I wasn't around at the time though so maybe there is some context I don't understand for that.

fuck it, adding 2 more days to the deadline. Probably not extending beyond that, though. 4 days left now. (also really need to post some extras, I'll start on that tonight)

I would have loved another chance to rank "Snortin' Whiskey". I'm pretty surprised we didn't get "I Don't Like Mondays" here but it was probably bigger in 79 on this format.

Just submitted, and man was this was a tough one to rank. There were plenty of songs in my 50s and 60s that it really hurt to put in the bottom half, and even my bottom few tracks were just subpar rather than outright bad. This year's mainstream has a solid lineup as well, although with a much different palette.

So, here's the deal. I was supposed to post 5 sets of extras before the rankdown itself started. Of course, I've only posted one of those so far. What I'll do is post two more tonight and the last two tomorrow...and I'll be starting reveals tomorrow night instead, which gives you one more day to submit. But I am absolutely not extending any further than this.

The second group of pre-reveal extras consists of songs that are also extras on either the 1980 or 1981 Mainstream Rock lists. Some notes on this set: -"Hells Bells" is the only good AC/DC song -"Johnny and Mary" was a fairly decent hit throughout much of Europe; however, it did nothing on the Hot 100. It would have done fairly well on my list. -"It's Different for Girls" was Jackson's biggest hit in his native UK, making the top 5 there; meanwhile, it just missed the Hot 100 (peaking at #101). -"Looking for Clues" was among the first music videos played on MTV. -"Over You" was the lead single to Flesh + Blood - it was a top 5 hit in the UK and their final song to make the Hot 100, peaking at #80. -"Stop Your Sobbing", a Kinks cover, was the Pretenders' debut single (getting to #65 on the Hot 100 after a re-release). Fun fact: this cover led to Chrissie Hynde dating (and having a child with) Kinks frontman Ray Davies. -"Passion" was the biggest hit in this set, getting to #5 on the Hot 100 and charting highly in many other countries. It finished at #41 in the 1981 Hot 100 rankdown.-"I Only Want to Be With You" is a Dusty Springfield cover that only reached #83 on the Hot 100 but was a top 10 hit in the UK and Australia. But more notably: the singer and guitarist for The Tourists are none other than Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, who just a year later would form the Eurythmics. -"The Hardest Part" peaked at #84 on the Hot 100 -"She Talks in Stereo" would later be featured on the soundtrack to Valley Girl-"Getting Mighty Crowded" is a cover of a song written by Van McCoy for soul singer Betty Everett; it was released on the B-sides/rarities comp Taking LibertiesYE# | Artist | Song | Pts | Video | 114 | The Cars | Gimme Some Slack | 132 | | 119 | Queen | Dragon Attack | 128 | | 121 | Rod Stewart | Gi' Me Wings | 127 | | 124 | Heart | Bebe Le Strange | 124 | | 131 | AC/DC | Hells Bells | 119 | | 136 | Gary Myrick and the Figures | She Talks in Stereo | 115 | | 137 | The Cars | Don't Tell Me No | 114 | | 143 | Elvis Costello | Getting Mighty Crowded | 110 | | 148 | The Kingbees | My Mistake | 107 | | 152 | Dave Davies | Nothin' More to Lose | 105 | | 154 | Heart | Rockin Heaven Down | 104 | | 158 | Rod Stewart | Passion | 102 | | 163 | The Babys | Too Far Gone | 97 | | n/a | Blondie | The Hardest Part | - | | n/a | Joe Jackson | It's Different for Girls | - | | n/a | Peter Gabriel | I Don't Remember | - | | n/a | Pretenders | Stop Your Sobbing | - | | n/a | Robert Palmer | Johnny and Mary | - | | n/a | Robert Palmer | Looking for Clues | - | | n/a | Roxy Music | Over You | - | | n/a | Squeeze | If I Didn't Love You | - | | n/a | The Romantics | When I Look in Your Eyes | - | | n/a | The Tourists | I Only Want to Be With You | - | |

The remaining 3 sets of pre-reveal extras consist of songs from artists already on the rankdown. I don't know if anyone even reads these notes but here they are: -"Boys": Released as the B-side to "Bela Lugosi's Dead". -"Telegram Sam": Non-album single; a cover of one of T. Rex's most popular songs. -"Dreaming": The lead single to Eat to the Beat and a #27 Hot 100 hit. More importantly, it's the first of several extras here that we actually will rank in 1979 Mainstream Rock. -"Candy-O": The title track to their second album and an apparent fan favorite. -"Dangerous Type": Another fan favorite off Candy-O. We also ranked it last year in one of the rock tournament rankdowns. -"The Guns of Brixton": The first London Calling track here (and my favorite of them); notably, this was the first Clash song to feature bassist Paul Simonon on vocals. also Red-"Lost in the Supermarket": The second London Calling track here; this song is about alienation and consumerism. -"Spanish Bombs": The third London Calling track in this set; this song's lyrics compare modern Spain to Spanish Civil War-era Spain. -"The Call Up": The lead single for Sandinista!-"10:15 Saturday Night": The B-side to "Killing an Arab", and the opening track on Three Imaginary Boys. -"Jumping Someone Else's Train": A non-album single released between "Boys Don't Cry" and Seventeen Seconds. -"Killing an Arab": Their debut single, it's attracted controversy for obvious reasons. I feel fairly safe in saying said controversy is why it's missing from Spotify. -"The Puppet": A non-album single released following Crocodiles; it became overshadowed by its B-side "Do It Clean" (which just happens to be on this rankdown!). -"Metal": A relatively popular album cut off The Pleasure Principle; notably covered by Nine Inch Nails and by Poppy. Would have landed in my top 20. -"We Are Glass": #5 hit in the UK, a non-album single released between The Pleasure Principle and Telekon. -"Life in Tokyo": A collaboration with none other than Giorgio Moroder, and his prints show all over this song! Also marks their transition into synthpop from glam rock. -"Quiet Life": Title track on their 3rd album. Also quite possibly my favorite Japan song....and I do love me some Japan, so a top 5 spot on my list would not have been out of the question. -"Tears of a Clown": Their debut single, and (as you probably guessed from the title) a Smokey Robinson cover. -"Twist and Crawl": it's a Beat song (and one I really like), what more can I say -"Pretty Green": The opening track on Sound Affects; Liam Gallagher notably named a clothing label after this song. I'll be giving three extras from this set their own posts. First off, one of the band's most popular cuts (and the 7th track on Unknown Pleasures). We ranked a cover by The Killers in 2008 Alt. Shadowplay Joy Division

And speaking of notable debut singles...how about the song that not only marked the debut of one of post-punk's most important bands, but practically created the entire genre of gothic rock? Bela Lugosi's Dead Bauhaus

And now, for the first of two sets of extras tonight. Three individual song posts coming afterwards. "Red Frame / White Light": Their second single, it's about a telephone box of all things. "Hey You": The 14th track on The Wall; while not released as a single (although it was "Comfortably Numb"'s B-side), it has become among the band's most popular songs, with nearly 160 million Spotify streams. "Mother": The 6th track on The Wall; features session drummer Jeff Porcaro taking over for Dave Mason. "Young Lust": The 9th track on The Wall; we ranked a live cover with Bryan Adams on vocals in 1990 Mainstream Rock. "When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around": 3rd track on Zenyatta Mondatta, known as a fan favorite despite not being released as a single. "Kid": Their second single and the 8th track on their debut; charted at #33 in the UK. "Imitation of Christ": The 3rd track on their eponymous debut. "We Love You": Their debut single; made a small dent on the US dance chart peaking at #77. "Baby, I Love You": A Ronettes cover that (like the original) was produced by Phil Spector, and a UK top 10. "Thirty Frames a Second": The 7th track from Empires and Dance. "The Great Curve": The 3rd track on Remain in Light. "A Day Without Me": The lead single from Boy. "Another Day": Their second single, not included on an album. "Stories for Boys": Initially released on their 1979 debut EP, it was re-recorded for Boy. "Passing Strangers": The second single from Vienna (that's right, the title track was its third single), only peaking at #57 in the UK. "Sleepwalk": The lead single from Vienna and the first song they recorded with Midge Ure; a UK #29. "Soul Kitchen": A Doors cover; the Los Angeles album was produced by the Doors' keyboardist Ray Manzarek. "Life Begins at the Hop": Their first UK charter, peaking at #54 there; not officially released on an album, but the US version of Drums and Wires included it. "Wait 'Til Your Boat Goes Down": A reggae-tinged stand-alone single that did not chart.

Even with the strength of this RD as a whole (hell, the strength of these extras), I'm fairly sure "The Guns of Brixton", "Bela", "Nigel", and "Born Under Punches" all would have been in my top 20 somewhere. I can't even say "Dreaming" and "Shadowplay" would have been there for sure, and I love those songs.

I don't know, I'm just not feeling like starting reveals tonight. Sorry, everyone. Here's the last group of pre-reveal extras (with 3 more highlights coming). "Canary in a Coalmine": 4th track on Zenyatta Mondatta. "Twenty Four Hours": 7th track from Closer. Would have gotten a top 10 from me, one of my favorite tracks on that album. "Breathing": The lead single from Never for Ever, this song features backing vocals from folk musician Roy Harper. "In The Flat Field": 2nd track on the album of the same name; apparently the first song that the band ever wrote. "Even the Losers": Despite only being released as a single in Australia, this has become among his more popular tracks. "Send It to Me": 3rd track on Emotional Rescue, also issued as the B-side to "She's So Cold". "Another Nail in My Heart": Lead single from Argybargy; didn't chart here, but in addition to being a top 20 UK hit it also charted in Canada. "Everybody Wants Some!!": How Alt gave this song more attention than Active I'm...not exactly sure. But it has significantly grown in popularity among their discography over time. "Bankrobber": Stand-alone single later included on the Black Market Clash compilation. "Pain": 3rd track on Flush the Fashion. Can't find anything about a single release, but it did get a music video. "Not One of Us": 8th track on Melt. Also didn't get a single release, so I guess Alt programmers just really liked it. "Stigmata Martyr": 8th track on In the Flat Field. "Don't Bring Me Down": A live cover of the Goffin/King song popularized by The Animals, this was initially only available as the B-side on import copies of the "Here Comes My Girl" single. It received its first official US release on the 1985 live compilation Pack Up the Plantation. "M": 8th track on Seventeen Seconds. "Decades": 9th and final track on Closer. Another one of my favorites on it. "Villiers Terrace": 7th track on Crocodiles and the namesake of the band's fansite. "My Wave": I don't really know what to say here other than that uh it's just another very novelty-ish surf punk song "India": Opening track on their debut; charted on the US dance chart peaking at #36. "Too Nice To Talk To": Non-album single; a UK #7. "Cuban Slide": Like with "Don't Bring Me Down", this was initially available as a B-side on an import single (in this case, "Talk of the Town"). Its domestic release came in 1981. "What Are You Doin' in My Life?": 8th track on Damn the Torpedoes.

Unlike most of his most popular material, this song was a major hit throughout Europe upon release...but the only charting action it received here was a top 10 spot on the dance charts and an appearance on the soul charts. Could You Be Loved Bob Marley & The Wailers

man these early years were crammed with extras. I'll do a few that would have represented my own top songs of 1979-80, and definitely would have changed my list.
The Cars - Gimme Some Slack Wish we had ranked this one. I remember it getting airplay. This is my second favorite single off "Panorama'. What I love about the Cars' songs is that very song featired a section were each members musical talent was showcased. The intro belongs to Robinson, the main hook Feels like a fast version of "My Best Friend's Girl". Has some Ocasek Rock a Billy guitars. The chorus is an early version of "Think It Over". That's were Hawks shines. The solo is all Easton and of course it's all held together by Orr's bass. I would have either included this one or "Dangerous Type" in my top 10.
The Cars - Dangerous Type I would have definitely put this classic in my top 15, but I recall it getting much more airplay on KLOS so for me it's more Mainstream Rock than Modern Rock. Like all Cars' songs Rick sings about that unattainable women that guys will go out of there ways to get with. The words he uses to describe here doesn't exactly paint a picture of a HOT blonde on roller skates , but some how you still want her because she is dangerous. This is one of those Cars' songs that fall into epic territory for me. Form the initial intro build up where each member enters in with his own instrument. It almost gives me the image of the band building the perfect "Eve" with each instrument representing her body. mind, personality, voice and that one last aspect that makes her the "Dangerous Type" they all gotta have. This is the best Chick song they have written next to "Let's Go".
The Cars - Candy-O I'm going to review this song , but at the same time the actual album. Not every song, but the album in general. First the song, than I will gradually start talking about the album in a blink of an eye. This one is one of Ben Orr's fiercest performances. The song itself really blurs the line of New Wave, Rock and a hint of Punk. Some say it's a about a girl. Others say it's about Rick's thought on being a Rock Star. Candy being the enticement of Rock star life. For me it's about a Girl, and more importantly the girl that's lying on the Ferrari on the cover sleeve who's name was Candy Moore. When you hear the lyric "Candy-O I need you so" you can't help thinking about the girl on the cover. Which gives the song a sort of hypnotic power over the listener. If you were like me ,and held the cover in your hands weather it be to read the lyrics or just gawk at the model that album could easily become your favorite album of all time. Needless to say it was in my dad's collection so I would sneak a peak ,and listen to it all the time. If I was ever to post my 1980's music charts you would see there was a span of weeks where I had about 5 Cars' songs in my top 20/30. Half from this album , and the other half from "Panorama". I complied these charts later on in the 90's, but that is how music kept making sense to me. Going back instead of forward. This album here has been my sex education, my 90's salvation, and has pulled me out of more dark times than I can count. Candy-O = delicious, playful, enticing, and hypnotic.
The Cars - Don't Tell Me No While not one of my favorite off the Album even this one made my top 30. I do love the lyrics. Benjamin is basically inviting us to revel in his Rock n Roll lifestyle. There are others who say it was him just asking a girl to come trip with him. Also makes sense, but with the high comes the low which he is also describing. Finally ,and my favorite meaning is that it is basically a marriage proposal. He is letting her know that with the good comes the bad. Are you in or are you out, but don't tell me no. He basically knows her answer will be yes anyway. That is why he comes clean.
Just a couple more i charted because this turned out longer than i thought.
Blondie - Dreaming This was a top 10 on my charts. Song lyrics never hit me as deep as with The Cars so this is song is all about the fact that it's a catchy poprock song with great chorus. The lyrics are upbeat tho and they describe the first time she met guitarist and long time partner Chris Stein. I like that meaning the best. It's positive and describes one of the major highlights of her life. The "Dreamin" them is also one of my favorites in music. Unintentionally this song and the Cranberries "Dreams" give off very similar vibes with the music. It's melodic with a dreamy aesthetic pop feel to it.
The Cure - Jumping Someone Else's Train By the third time I redid my early 80's charts this song fell on my lap. I was already living in different parts of the world and France was really into The Cure . The rerelease of "Boy's Don'T Cry" was all over the radio in '86, and so this one got heavy airplay as well. I immediately gelled with it because of the similar vibes of both songs. This song again returned to my life in the late 90's I used to cross the border to go to Tijuana's Spanish Rock clubs. Spanish Rock love The Cure. After a few editions I ended up eventually finding a way to take this song to my top 10. Some could call the song a little simple in melody, but that melody is hard hitting and intense.
The English Beat - Tears of a Clown I'm already a big fan of the Smokey Robinson original and Bassix's High NRG vers., so when I first this I found it to be charming as hell. The song's melody really lends itself for the English Beat's New Wave style. Dave's vocals compliment the ska brass and jumpy beats quite nicely.
Gary Numan - We Are Glass This song should have gotten a special EXTRA shout out section. Discovered this one while viewing the U.K's 80's year end charts, which I found at a bookshop in France. That's where I purchased this Gary Numan vinyl. This song should and could have been a follow up to Po's "Cars". It is melodically handsome from start to finish and the guitar vibes kinda remind me of early David Bowie. Another would be top 20 on my list if we had gotten a chance to rank it.
Making Plans for Nigel - XTC My second favorite from the band next to "senses....". I love the moody New Wave atmosphere the guitars bring on. New wave had many different sounds , and I couldn't decipher all of them, but there is also a constant guitar twang? in the background that keeps the song on melodic realms. I can't describe it, (maybe a slight hooting sound)? but that is the main reason I love this song. Who really cares as long as I rank it high right/
The Police - Canary in a Coalmine here another song that caused damage to my Zenyatta Mondatta cassette. So much fun. Like a barrel of canaries.
I Wanna Be Sedated - Ramones I guess we will end tonight's episode with one of my favorite punk songs by one of my favorite punk bands. The Ramone's rock. I have "Rock n Roll High School" on VHS. THis ong is all kinds of awseome. It's fast and repetitive , but that's exactly what I like about it. It's basically an anthem to be sedated. "Bam-bam-bambam bambam-bam-bambam I wanna be sedated"........Still not my favorite Ramones' song, but surely top 20 worthy.
**These songs above would have drastically changed the list I submitted. In a way I'm glad they were didn't make the cut so I could rank some of my other favorites from the year.
**These songs here while i don't think are that adequate for this format all made my top 20 or even some my top 10, but would not have made much difference to my list.
AC/DC - Hells Bells Van Halen- Everybody Wants Some!! Rod Stewart - Passion Alice Cooper- Pain Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Even The Losers Pretenders - Cuban Slide

I actually put many of these extras in the hypothetical 1979 Modern list. Tears of a Clown, Transmission, Dreaming, Making Plans for Nigel, Bela Legusi's Dead, I Wanna Be Sedated, etc. (I didnt use radio data, it's just a list of songs from 1979 and late 1978 I could find that seemed somewhat popular at the time)
