okay , the standouts on various listens where these: -Out of time -How do I make you love me? -Sacrifice -Less than zero -Is there someone else? -Take my breath.
Less than zero should have been pushed instead of Sacrifice.

Flicked through everything and it’s meh. I love a lot of the instrumentals but really not a fan of his vocals on most stuff. However, Less Than Zero is so good. Why was it not the single?! It reminds me of a happy version of Save Your Tears

I like the album on first listen, the production is excellent and everything is at the very least listenable. The Quincy and Jim interludes are unnecessary as are "Starry Eyes" and "Every Angel Is Terrifying."
I'm surprised he went so hard in this direction. "Blinding Lights" was massive (massive is an understatement) and so was "Save Your Tears." I think he needed to pivot in another direction for at least this album, something moodier or possibly more Urban. Then swing back with an 80's synth-pop inspired album if that's what he wanted. "Take My Breath" is an undeniable smash, it's tepid response speaks volumes. I don't think people are over The Weeknd, I just think they're worn out from this style from him.

Not sure how it will hold up long-term for me, but I think this is my favorite album by him at the moment. Love the 80s late night drive vibe.

First listen review of Dawn FM.
1. Dawn FM (8/10) | Damn I love a good intro for a concept album and this is just great. 2. Gasoline (7.5/10) | We've never heard that kind of vocals from him. Interesting. The production is very good already. 3. How Do I Make You Love Me? (8.5/10) | This screams single tbh. But I've heard there are bigger smashes waiting to happen in the album so I have to listen to the whole thing first. Amazing synths. 4. Take My Breath (8/10) | Okay that transition was fire. I've never been a huge fan of this song. I did like the extended version (and the fact he sacrificed streams to follow his vision is admirable). I probably won't return to this as much as other tracks though. 5. Sacrifice (7/10) | Now that's a major throwback. Very Random Access Memories when it comes to blending retro sounds and electronic music. Not my cup of tea though. 6. A Tale By Quincy (6/10) 7. Out Of Time (7/10) | I love a good change of pace! We needed a breather after those bangers. I like the concept of this song more than I like the execution tbh. Cool outro. 8. Here We Go... Again (8.5/10) | I'm really feeling this one. It's very laid back and relaxing. Certain parts remind me of "Snowchild" which is one of my favorites on After Hours. 9. Best Friends (8/10) | Oh I see we're getting our ratchet back now. I was worried at first that all of the songs would have the same type of disco beat but we've gotten a mix of vibes so far. 10. Is There Someone Else? (8/10) | This will probably be a single too at some point. It's accessible and catchy. 11. Starry Eyed (7.5/10) | Okay I think I jinxed it. Tracks 9-11 feel like a long track (which I wouldn't mind if they were combined into a single song). 12. Every Angel Is Terrifying (6/10) | This is lowkey pointless as an interlude. The background music is nice. 13. Don't Break My Heart (8/10) | Cute little bop this one. The chorus is very chill but also catchy. 14. I Heard You're Married (8/10) | Okay I expected more of this in the album if I'm being honest. 15. Less Than Zero (9/10) | My expectations for this were pretty high cause the reception has been fantastic. The beat is beautiful and those strings in the background really complement it. I love the chorus and the way it builds. This style definitely suits him. This could dominate Pop Radio. 16. Phantom Regret By Jim (7/10) | Great music in the background. I never realized Jim Carrey had a cool voice. I'm not very into spoken word but it's a nice outro to the album.

I'll always be a sucker for this PSB-esque sound but this is the first album of his where I didn't hear any standouts on first listen.

Take My Breath hits harder within the album. That buildup 🔥

Less than Zero is so good. Hopefully in the near future it becomes a single. Pop radio is gonna eat this song up.

Yes the whole sequence into TMB is exquisite. And I like that Abel’s vision of heaven has purple rain falls, a nod to Prince? Overall I need more time, I’m conflicted by the late-night ‘grinding party records’ concept he touted versus his emotional distress as he approaches the Dawn; Starry Eyes has such low-spirited lyrics but hidden so sweet in synths. Parties are supposed to be fun, The Weeknd has challenged us, Sit back and unpack you may be here awhile. I like the preludes, I think they fit in nicely within the larger picture of this being a faux radio show. I wonder if Janet approves, I thought of some of her albums.

I listened to the album this morning and I enjoyed it. Some songs I'll need more time with but I thought most of the songs were excellent. My favorites were Sacrifice, Out of Time, Best Friends, and I Heard You're Married.

This is an even stronger album than After Hours for me. On par with Starboy easily.

His first albums and mixtapes are definitely superior. This album has no real smashes or brilliant songwriting.

This is pleasant. Since I read his quote about the concept before listening, I think it made more sense.
I guess it's a direct continuation from "Until I Bleed Out"

On second listen, this is excellent. So many highlights tbh. This is right behind After Hours in my ranking of his studio albums as of right now.

I’m unfortunately not feeling a majority of the album even after 2nd full listening, but Out Of Time is superb.

Yeah, "Less Than Zero" is clearly the hit on the album. "Sacrifice" is cute but LTZ is an undeniable smash.

I liked LZO also, but there are several other cuts that sound promising on first listen too.

I like certain synth pop and the 80's pop, so I'll definitely give this a spin.

Anthony Fantano really enjoyed the album. The only thing that he seemed to outright dislike was the Lil Wayne verse on "IHYM" (and jokingly that he tried too hard to sound like Carti).

One thing my friend did point out to me is that it probably doesn't really matter what they release right now given the 'surprise' element and the BL/SYT effect - so might make sense to save more obvious smashes to later when the album needs a push?

Really digging this album. Gets much better with every listen. I love how seamless everything is. Obsessed with "Out of Time" rn.

My would be something like this:
After Hours Sacrifice Save Your Tears Less Than Zero In Your Eyes How Do I Make You Love Me? Blinding Lights Take My Breath Faith Heartless Out Of Time Hardest To Love
Best Friends Don't Break My Heart Alone Again

The album is solid if you think it purely from the "vibe" and quality perspective. However, as I am not the biggest The Weeknd fan, more like casual type, I don't see any reason to return to this album instead of all the amazing pop music that's been created from 80s onwards: Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, MJ etc. I am just not FEELING it. To me, he hasn't found anything new even in his own musical universe. The lyrics are obviously less misogynistic that they were back in the day. Also, this feels like flat project by Max Martin songwriting-wise. I give it 6/10.
