As for the Spotify thing, literally all that does is give you access to Drake's album as if you had a premium account, meaning there are no ads, no limits on how many tracks you can skip and you can go back and forth between songs. You can do most of that with a free account. This benefits Spotify a lot more than it does Drake because they're using his album to try to gain more subscribers. They do this with every Drake major release because he's the biggest streaming act.

Whatever context you choose to view these numbers under, they're very impressive because the same person has been setting and breaking these streaming records since we got into the streaming era and nobody is coming close to breaking them.

Can we all just appreciate the significance of the numbers he put up and move on? I don't know why anyone is trying to explain this away.

Many of the user reviews on metacritic remarked about the album not having any obvious hit singles. I've seen the same thing on Twitter and on several other forums that I frequent. Of course, there are many other reasons why people don't like the album but that's the one thing I've seen being mentioned everywhere I've seen commentary about the album.

good gawd i'm not a fan of CLB either but the argument "there's not any clear singles" is very dense.

he didn't release any singles beforehand so clearly that wasn't the intention, and i'm not really sure how that affects the quality of the music? as thegreatdivine said, halsey just did it with their latest project and it received strong critical acclaim. taylor released folklore, which had one single "cardigan" that didn't even make the 2020 YE list, and it went on to win AOTY.

whether you like drake's new album or not, criticize the music and not its promotional tactics (and that same sentiment can be placed onto literally any other release)

IICHLIWP has tons of songs worth revisiting, that's why it won't even manage 100 million streams in it's first week and will likely be out of the Billboard top 10 in it's second week and keep falling till it leaves the Billboard 200.

Beerbongs and Bentleys has a 51 rating on Metacritic but critic reviews are everything. I guess that should mean there's nothing on it worth revisiting, that's why it's one of the most consumed albums of the streaming era.

Fair Trade is clearly the hit of the album. Girls Want Girls is just an illusion (that might actually go to #1 sadly) and Way 2 Sexy might stay for a bit but eventually underperform. Champagne Poetry is the intro of the album so of course its going to be a higher entry on the streaming charts but it’ll start to drop by next week. I can see In The Bible, Love All or No Friends In The Industry being the non single of the album that ends up sticking around and maybe even making the year end list.

Holy shit Omfg, when I said "hits" here I specifically meant it of the way I interpret people were meaning when they said "this album doesn't have hits". They mean "this album has songs worth revisiting" which they mean are hits.

Far be it for me to defend dull-ass Drake but that’s still an odd way to put it, yet I agree. Just say it’s boring, not that there aren’t any hits. It comes across as shallow. Personally, if I’m listening to a new album and every song sounds like a single, I’m probably going to find it boring, only because of how limiting a song has to be in order to even be a single, let alone a hit. An artist is most interesting (to me) when they record songs without having hits in mind. That’s why folklore and evermore are the most interesting versions of Taylor to me. It’s why this new Halsey album is interesting. So it is odd to me that people are saying Drake’s album has no hits as a criticism. Maybe my definition of “hits” is different than the common use of the word? Idk.
