Up next is the lead single from Earth, Wind & Fire's 9th album. Featuring backing vocals from the Emotions, this song performed better on the Hot 100 (#6 peak) but only managed to reach #2 on the Soul chart. EXTRA

Nigel Olsson was a drummer for the Elton John Band and his song here made the 1979 Hot 100 year-end list. "Hot Summer Nights" is a cover of the Walter Egan song from 1978. There are 3 songs in this set from the E Street Band member Nils Lofgren and his 5th solo album Nils. "Baltimore" is his take on the Randy Newman song and Patti Smith's song here is a remake of the song by the Byrds (1967). Orleans are a New York based band fronted by John Hall, though he was not with the band this album era. The 2 live songs in this set from Queen are off of their first live album Live Killers. There are also a pair of songs from the American composer Randy Newman's 6th album Born Again. "Just When I Needed You Most" was the biggest hit for the American singer-songwriter. It made the 1979 Hot 100 year-end list and was a #1 hit on the Adult Contemporary chart. Finally, there's a song here from a founding member of the McCoys, Rick Derringer, who is best known for his 1973 cover of "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo". Time for a total rant here from a long time Kiss Army member. I just realized that songs off Kiss's 'Dynasty' were completely glance over on Mainstream. I kept thinking I would eventually run into it as I was previewing songs of the list. Unless by some twist of fate it's on mainstream 1978 this seems like a complete diss by the U.S. rock format? The song in question is "I Was made For Lovin' You". The song was a global top 2 hit even nearly top 10 on Billboard Hot 100. To add further salt to the injury it seems this format was even playing straight out disco hits like Earth Wind and Fire? WTF? Not too mention Blondie's and Rod Stewart's most Disco- ish hits ever gor Rock radio play. Not dissing on those disco hits. If anything rock artists proved that rock acts made better disco hits that disco acts. The Kiss song would have fit like a glove on this RD. Kiss was right when they said the Rock format always kept them down for fear of scoring the crown song of the year. It's the one song missing to build my perfect 1979 Top 10. Even some of the rock 80's metal dissers gotta admit this rocks proper. This song more than rocks proper. It kicks ass, to a disco beat. That is quite an undertaking

Doesn’t Gene Simmons hate the song, perhaps rock radio felt the same way and couldn’t readily get behind it? I agree it has an undeniable groove to it and a glaring miss with Rod being here. Speaking of disco beats will we be listening to The Stones’, Miss You in ‘78?

Speaking of disco beats will we be listening to The Stones’, Miss You in ‘78? Yes. It was the third biggest hit of the year, in fact.

Speaking of disco beats will we be listening to The Stones’, Miss You in ‘78? It was really Ace who hated it. Gene can sometimes be a tool, and wants to seem cool ,and say he hates it. gene can talk all the crap he wants, but the song mostly rides on his bassline. It did turn out to be one of their biggest pop hits. Just right below "Beth" and "Forever", and it has always been on their concert playlists

This next grouping of extras contains a rockabilly cover of the 1958 Conway Twitty song "It's Only Make Believe". And "Get Used to It" was the biggest and only charter for the singer-songwriter from San Francisco Roger Voudouris (it also made the 1979 Hot 100 year-end list). This next set features 4 songs from Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. They are a band from the Jersey Shore that is closely associated with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. There's a song here from radio personality Steve Dahl and his band who did parodies of songs this one being a parody of the Rod Stewart hit. Also included is a track from the English glam rock band Sweet's 7th album Cut Above the Rest. I remember KLOS playing almost every song off "Candy-O' way into the mid 80's. Incredible only three get mentioned. "It's All I Can Do" was even a HOT 100 hit at #41. The Babys - Head First was easily my favorite Baby's song. Would have made my top 20 on this list. Here is one of those TOTP "live" performances.

Some interesting stuff in the extras, as well as the albums they came from. Supertramp's Breakfast in America was overall a pretty good album. Listened to the Ron Wood album (Gimme Some Neck) which included the non-single F.U.C. Her (some rather racy lyrics). Sweet's tune was fun and a bit racy as well - the 70's were definitely a bit in your face. The Southside Johnny tunes were pretty good, particularly liked I Played the Fool and Trapped Again. Ted Nugent songs keep getting better as we go back in time, particularly Tight Spots. The Cars songs were both solid, but their first couple albums were solid from front to back. The Doors Roadhouse Blues was great, I need to listen to that whole American Prayer album. Stumblin' In is a very sweet classic from Leather Tuscadero (the singer/actress from the "Happy Days" tv show)

One of my favorite years in rock. My actual top 100 from 1979 featured about 50 of these songs. The rest were from 1980 that I charted a year ahead. I have not compiled any top 100 before 1979.
