There are definitely some 80 influences in the late 70's and a couple of really interesting finds. The Police "Can't Stand Losing You" would have easily made my top 10 and probably my top 5, definitely ahead of "Roxanne". Interesting fact about this song, the song only hit #2 in the UK upon re-release as the BBC banned it when it when was first released because the single cover was a bit explicit showing Stewart Copeland standing on a block of ice with a noose around his neck, waiting for the ice to melt. (It's a bit much).
The Sports tune was a lot of fun and they have an interesting catalogue of Australian hits, including a great cover of "When You Walk in the Room" (which has been covered by a lot of people). The Sinceros likewise have an interesting catalogue of songs, definitely leaning toward 80's power pop, English style. All the Outlaw tunes were good and 2/3 of the Marshall Tucker were likewise (I wasn't a fan of their jazzy singing cowboy - glad he was the last of the singing cowboys). Pleasantly surprised by the Max Demian Band and Marc Tanner Band songs - pleasing songs by bands I had never heard of. Alternatively have heard better from Geils and the Kinks.
Looking forward to the rankdown!

It's time for the last of the pre-reveal extras! "Prime Time" was produced by another artist in this set: Todd Rundrgren. "I Do the Rock" is from the English actor's 2nd album Fearless and was his only song to chart on the Hot 100. The Todd Rundgren songs here are from the live album Back to the Bars. And finally there are a pair of extras from the solo debut album Everything You've Heard Is True by the Doobie Brothers' vocalist Tom Johnston. YE Rank | Artist - Song | Peak | Weeks | Audio | Hot 100 | 138 | The Tubes - Prime Time | 27 | 10 | Link | - | 171 | The Who - Trick of the Light | 19 | 6 | Link | - | 131 | The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (Live) | 13 | 7 | Link | - | 129 | Tim Curry - I Do the Rock | 27 | 12 | Link | 91 | 345 | Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me (Live) | 40 | 1 | Link | - | 350 | Todd Rundgren - I Saw the Light (Live) | 41 | 1 | Link | - | 317 | Todd Rundgren - Medley: I'm So Proud / Ooh Baby Baby / La La Means I Love You / I Saw the Light (Live) | 41 | 2 | Link | - | 306 | Todd Rundgren - Real Man (Live) | 37 | 2 | Link | - | 295 | Tom Johnston - Outlaw | 33 | 2 | Link | - | 279 | Tom Johnston - Savannah Nights | 39 | 4 | Link | 34 |

Trillion were a progressive rock band from Chicago and their song here is off of their self-titled debut album. UK were a progressive rock supergroup that was formed by a couple members of King Crimson. This set also includes a couple of songs from the Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison and his 10th album wavelength. Wet Willie are a southern rock band from Mobile, AL who are best known for their song "Keep on Smilin'". And "Rockestra Theme" won the 1980 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. This final extra was the 3rd single from Toto's self-titled debut album. The song peaked at #48 on the Hot 100 and features backing vocals from Cheryl Lynn which helped it to reach the top 20 on the Soul chart. EXTRA

I finished listening to every track last night and will be submitting later tonight or early tomorrow after reviewing my list a bit. I was pretty optimistic about this year based on the 40 or so tracks that I was highly familiar with, and 1979 certainly delivered in terms of classic rock radio staples, excellent power pop tracks, and southern rock anthems. Unfortunately, the year also got bogged down by some moldy soft rock, hit-or-miss AOR, and forgettable one hit wonders. I feel my upper half here is solid, but I think top to bottom, this is the weakest year since 1985.

This (& the fact that album rock radio avoided punk at all costs) is why the Alternative/Modern Rock/New Music format started up in the 80s

Miscellaneous fun fact: although MTV wouldn't debut until well over a year later in August 1981, six of our tracks for this year (Nick Lowe - Cruel to Be Kind, Blondie - Heart of Glass, The Cars - Let's Go, Fleetwood Mac - Tusk, and both Rod Stewart tracks) would be broadcast during the network's first 24 hours. Also broadcast that day were two of our extras: Tom Johnston - Savannah Nights and The Tubes - Prime Time.

Both Who songs were good, particularly the live version of Won't Get Fooled Again. I can understand why the other Who song didn't make the charts given the subject matter was on performance anxiety with a lady of the evening. All the live Todd Rundgren songs were enjoyable. Trillion had a little Yes thing going on, by the one time (short time) singer of Toto. The Van Halen songs were definitely good, but not their best. Not a fan of Wings' Rockestra or Toto's Georgy Porgy. Check out the pornstaches on 1/2 the guys from Tycoon; their song was pretty forgettable but those staches are classic 70's.

Please tag me in the reveals too! I'll try to submit for 1978, now that there's no more Modern Rock RDs, lol.
Rooting for "Sultans of Swing" this time around

This was a pretty solid list. I knew about 60 songs. The others included great discoveries and overall good songs. There were only 7 that I wouldn’t hear again -especially my #100. At the same time this list includes one of the absolute best rock top 20s I’ve ranked, with songs I consider amongst my favorites ever, some that I was surprised at how low they were in the list. Look forward to the reveals of such a great list!

I can't even dare to guess the full bottom 10, but I'm guessing it may include these 4:
REO Speedwagon - Back on the Road Again Herman Brood & His Wild Romance - Saturday Night Jay Ferguson - Shakedown Cruise David Werner - What's Right
As far as the top 10, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Blondie song (or two), a Police song (or two), Nick Lowe, a Cars tune (or two), Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac, and Queen make the Top 10. That said the Bad Company, Molly Hatchett, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin (to a degree) and ELO songs are all incredibly worthy and longstanding radio stalwarts. I'm not overly hopeful for AC/DC after last year and how You Shook Me All Night Long fared.
There are two songs that I had never heard prior to this rankdown - one by an artist that I had never heard of and another by a very well known artist that I've never been overly fond of. I'm rooting hard for both of them based on their artistic merit, but I dare not jinx them by calling them out.
Bring it on!

Knowing the general fondness for alternative-leaning material and fresh sounding music production around these parts, I'm predicting a lot of power pop/new wave tracks in the top 20 and a landslide of '70s soft rock in the bottom 20. I feel certain that Blondie, The Cars, Dire Straits, Cheap Trick, and maybe Supertramp will all land a track in the top 10 or darn close to it. I think hard rock and harder AOR tracks will do a bit better than usual here, but I feel like southern rock might get tanked. In terms of standard deviation, I'm assuming the lowest will be someone towards the top, maybe Cheap Trick or Blondie. As for the highest, I don't know. I would suggest maybe "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" as it's a love-it-or-hate-it kind of track and a somewhat awkward fit for the format, but I don't know enough about how this board feels about disco to say that with any certainty.

Top 10: Heart of Glass, Roxanne, My Sharona, Don't Bring Me Down, Cruel to Be Kind, Sultan of Swing, I Want You to Want Me, not sure on the other three.
Bottom 10: Shakedown Cruise, Dancin' Fool, Promises, I Want to Tell You, Fins, Saturday Night, Not sure what else
Highest SD: Tusk, maybe Flirtin' with Disaster?, Good Lovin'?
Lowest SD: Shakedown Cruise, Heart of Glass

Message in a Bottle >>>> Roxanne IMO.
If we had been able to rank all the Police singles for 79, that would have been a very Police heavy Top 10 for me, with everything but Roxanne making my Top 10, and that would have certainly made my Top 15.
1. Walking on the Moon 2. Can't Stand Losing You 3. Message in the Bottle 4. Roxanne
IMO, outside of Synchronicity Two, which would probably come in at #4 on my all time favorite Police singles, this is THE best period for Police songs.
