Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart With Biggest Week for an Album in Over a Year

Drake’s Certified Lover Boy album makes a spectacular debut atop the Billboard 200 chart with the biggest week for any album in over a year. The long-awaited set, which was released on Sept. 3, is Drake’s 10th No. 1 and starts with 613,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Sept. 9, according to MRC Data. That’s the biggest week for an album since the Aug. 8, 2020-dated chart, when Taylor Swift’s Folklore launched at No. 1 with 846,000 units.

Of Certified Lover Boy’s 613,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Sept. 9, SEA units comprise 562,000 units (equaling 743.67 million on-demand streams of the album’s 21 tracks), album sales comprise 46,000 (all from digital album sales; a CD release is due on Oct. 1) and TEA units comprise 5,000 units.


Let’s take a look at some of the feats that Drake achieves with the debut of Certified Lover Boy:

10th No. 1 Album: Drake is now one of only eight artists with at least 10 No. 1 albums in the 65-year history of the Billboard 200 chart. The Beatles have the most No. 1s, with 19. They are followed by Jay-Z (14), Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand (11 each), Drake, Eminem, Elvis Presley and Kanye West (10 each). Drake first topped the Billboard 200 dated July 3, 2010, with Thank Me Later.

Biggest Week for an Album in Over a Year: With 613,000 equivalent album units earned, Certified Lover Boy logs the largest week for any album since Swift’s Folklore launched at No. 1 on the Aug. 8, 2020-dated chart with 846,000 units. Certified also easily scores 2021’s biggest week, blowing past the previous high, logged just a week earlier (Sept. 11 chart), when West’s Donda bowed at No. 1 with 309,000 units.

Largest Week for a Rap Album Since Drake’s Own ‘Scorpion’ Two Years Ago: It’s rare for an album to post as large a week as Certified. So rare, that in the last five years (going back to September 2016), only albums by Drake and Swift have been as big or bigger in a single week. Swift’s Reputation debuted with 1.24 million units on the Dec. 2, 2017-dated chart, followed by Drake’s Scorpion (732,000; July 14, 2018) and Swift’s Lover (867,000; Sept. 7, 2019) and Folklore (846,000; Aug. 8, 2020). Thus, Drake’s Certified Lover Boy snares the biggest week for an R&B/hip-hop album, a rap album, an album by a male artist, and any album by someone not named Taylor Swift since Drake’s own Scorpion in 2018.


Blockbuster Streams: Certified’s start of 562,000 SEA units equals a whopping 743.67 million on-demand streams of the album’s 21 tracks. Of that sum, audio on-demand streams comprise 714.83 million, while video on-demand streams comprise 28.84 million. Only one album has ever scored a larger streaming week by on-demand audio streams: Drake’s Scorpion, with 745.92 million for its 25 tracks during its debut week. (When Scorpion launched, SEA units only included on-demand audio streams, not on-demand video. Video streams did not join the Billboard 200’s methodology until the Jan. 18, 2020-dated chart.)

Certified Lover Boy was not preceded by any pre-release singles. Scorpion, however, was led by a trio of hits on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 songs chart: “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What” (both No. 1s, leading the list for 11 and eight weeks, respectively) and “I’m Upset.” (Scorpion ultimately housed seven Hot 100 top 10s, including another No. 1: the 10-week leader “In My Feelings.”) At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, West’s Donda falls to No. 2 in its second week with 141,000 equivalent album units earned (down 54%).


Iron Maiden earns its highest charting album ever on the Billboard 200, as its latest studio effort, Senjutsu, debuts at No. 3. The veteran hard rock band previously peaked at No. 4 with its last two studio releases: The Book of Souls (in 2015) and The Final Frontier (2010). In total, Senjutsu is Iron Maiden’s 15th top 40-charting album (dating to its first, The Number of the Beast, in 1982), of which four have hit the top 10.

Of Senjutsu’s 64,000 equivalent album units earned, album sales comprise 61,000 (making it the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 3,000 (equaling 3.57 million on-demand streams of the set’s 10 tracks) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum.

Senjutsu logs the second-largest week of 2021 for a hard rock album in both equivalent album units earned and in traditional album sales. It trails only Foo Fighters’ Medicine at Midnight, which debuted on the Feb. 20 chart with 70,000 units (of which 64,000 were in album sales). (Hard rock albums are defined as those that have charted on Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums chart.)


At No. 4 on the Billboard 200, Olivia Rodrigo’s former chart-topper Sour falls one spot with 61,000 equivalent album units earned (down 18%). Doja Cat’s Planet Her dips 4-5 (49,000 units; down 7%), Morgan Wallen’s former No. 1 Dangerous: The Double Album is a non-mover at No. 6 (40,000; down less than 1%), Billie Eilish’s former leader Happier Than Ever is also steady at No. 7 (just over 39,000; down 1%) and The Kid LAROI’s chart-topping F*ck Love falls 5-8 (39,000; down 10%).

Imagine Dragons claim their fifth top 10 album on the Billboard 200 as the rock band’s latest studio set, Mercury – Act 1, debuts at No. 9. The effort launches with 31,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 17,000; SEA units comprise 13,000 (equaling 17.04 million on-demand streams of the set’s tracks) and TEA units comprise 1,000.

Rod Wave’s former No. 1 SoulFly closes out the new top 10, dipping 8-10 with 30,000 equivalent album units earned (down 21%).

Pretty sure Taylor will probably edge closer to that given she is re-recording 5 old albums similar to Fearless. 

But obviously it's either one of those two (if not, both) that are the most likely among current artists at the moment to surpass The Beatles #1 albums.

It was bizarre when Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia disappeared for a week when the remix album debuted. What was the rationale for assigning streaming points for songs from the original album to the remix album, which is not a hits compilation, for that week?

Lady Gaga's 'Dawn of Chromatica' Crowns Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart in Record-Setting Week

Gaga ties Louie DeVito for the most No. 1s in the list's history, and is the first artist to monopolize the top four positions in a single week.

Lady Gaga launches at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart (dated Sept. 18) with Dawn of Chromatica, her seventh career leader. The remixed set, released Sept. 3, earned 11,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 9, according to MRC Data. The album sports remixes of songs first released on her 2020 LP Chromatica.

With the coronation, Gaga -- who already owned the mark for the most No. 1s among female acts dating to the chart's 2001 inception -- ties Louie DeVito for the most leaders overall. With six No. 1 debuts, Gaga also ties DeVito for that mark.

Further, Gaga holds the chart's top four positions, with Dawn of Chromatica (No. 1), Born This Way (No. 2), The Fame (No. 3) and Chromatica (No. 4). It's the first time any act has claimed the top four spots in a single week.

With 142 weeks at No. 1, the hit-laden The Fame (which includes Gaga's breakout hits "Just Dance" and "Poker Face," among others) has logged not only the most time on top among all titles, but more weeks at No. 1 than any other act: Gaga has reigned for 211 total weeks. The Chainsmokers are next, with 89 cumulative weeks at the summit.

Meanwhile, the new set's impact is felt on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, led by "911 (A. G. Cook Remix)," with Charli XCX, new at No. 14 (1.3 million U.S. streams).

Gaga also charts "Free Woman (Clarence Clarity Remix)," with Rina Sawayama (No. 20); "Rain on Me (Arca Remix)," with Ariana Grande (No. 23); and "Sour Candy (Shygirl & Mura Masa Remix)," with BLACKPINK (No. 24), in the survey's upper half.

Two songs from the original version of Chromatica topped Hot Dance/Electronic Songs last year: lead single "Stupid Love" (for three weeks) and "Rain on Me," with Grande (two).

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Returns to Top 10 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart After a Decade

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way album, released in 2011, returns to the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Sept. 18) for the first time in over a decade.

The set re-enters the list at No. 10 thanks to the Sept. 3 release of the CD and cassette editions of the album’s special 10th anniversary reissue. In the week ending Sept. 9, Born This Way sold 5,000 copies in the U.S. (up 5,251%), according to MRC Data. It sold about 100 copies in the week previous. (All versions of Born This Way, including the original release and the 10th anniversary reissue, are combined for tracking and charting purposes.)

Born This Way was originally released on May 23, 2011 and debuted at No. 1 on the June 18, 2011-dated chart. It was last in the top 10 on the July 23, 2011 list. The album was reissued on June 26, 2021 via digital retailers and streaming services with six additional tracks by other artists covering the album’s songs. (Among them: Kylie Minogue and Ben Platt.) The CD and cassette editions of the reissue followed on Sept. 3, while a vinyl LP release is expected on Dec. 10.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now MRC Data. Pure album sales were the measurement solely utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. Of Born This Way’s sales of 5,000 in the week ending Sept. 9, nearly all of the sum was driven by CD sales.

At No. 1 on Top Album Sales, veteran hard rock band Iron Maiden claims its first leader, as the act’s latest studio effort Senjutsu starts with a little over 61,000 copies sold (across CD, vinyl LP and digital downloads). The album also makes a splash across a bevy of other album charts, as it opens at No. 1 on Independent Albums, Top Rock Albums, Hard Rock Albums and Tastemaker Albums. (The latter ranks the week’s top-selling albums at independent and small chain record stores.)

Drake’s Certified Lover Boy begins at No. 2 on Top Album Sales with 46,000 copies sold, solely from digital downloads. It’s Drake’s 12th top 10 on the tally.

Olivia Rodrigo’s former No. 1 Sour is a non-mover at No. 3 with 20,000 (down 31%).

Rock band Imagine Dragons sees its newest studio album Mercury – Act 1 launch at No. 4 with 17,000 sold (across CD, vinyl LP, cassette and digital download). It’s the fifth top 10 for the act, and all of those have reached the top four on the list.

A trio of former No. 1s are next on the list, as Halsey’s If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power falls 1-5 in its second week (nearly 17,000; down 76%), Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever is steady at No. 6 (12,000; down 1%) and TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s The Chaos Chapter: Freeze dips 5-7 (8,000; down 43%).

Kanye West’s Donda descends 2-8 in its second week (7,500; down 79%) and J. Cole’s The Off-Season rises 10-9 (just over 5,000; down 28%).

ABBA is back in the top 40 of the Billboard 200 albums chart for the first time in over three years, as the Swedish pop pioneers' Gold: Greatest Hits surges from No. 114 to No. 34 on the Sept. 18-dated survey.

The set vaults following the release of two new singles from the quartet on Sept. 2, the announcement of a forthcoming studio album – Voyage, its first in 40 years, due Nov. 5 – and a series of concerts in 2022.

Gold earned 15,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Sept. 9, up 61%, according to MRC Data. Of that sum, album sales comprise 5,000, also enabling the set's 33-11 jump on the Top Album Sales chart.

Gold was last in the top 40 of the Billboard 200 on the chart dated Aug. 11, 2018, when the set ranked at No. 40. It was last higher than on the latest list just one week earlier, when it placed at No. 25, its peak. Gold was released in 1993 in the U.S. and has spent 186 weeks on the chart in total.

On Catalog Albums, Gold rallies from No. 30 to No. 3. (The Catalog Albums chart ranks the most popular older albums of the week, generally defined as those at least 18-months old and no longer within the top 100 of the Billboard 200 chart.)

ABBA Goes Global: ABBA's two new songs previewing Voyage, "Don't Shut Me Down" and "I Still Have Faith in You," both bound onto the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart in the top 40: "Shut" at No. 26 and "Faith" at No. 37. The former starts with 13.9 million streams and 23,900 sold outside the U.S. in the week ending Sept. 9, while the latter opens with 14.1 million streams and 20,300 sold.

On the Billboard Global 200, "Shut" begins at No. 54 (15.4 million streams; 26,900 sold worldwide) and "Faith" enters at No. 62 (15.7 million streams; 22,600 sold).

Meanwhile, Back on the U.S. Charts: On the U.S. based Digital Song Sales chart, ABBA's 1977 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 "Dancing Queen" is the group's top seller, re-entering at No. 19, a new best, with a 314% surge to 3,900 sold. "Shut" starts at No. 32 (3,000).

"We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we've decided it's time to end it," ABBA said in a statement released Sept. 2. The group will return to live performances with its residency, ABBA Voyage, set to begin May 27, 2022, in London, in which the act's members will be depicted as avatars (aka, "ABBAtars"), circa 1979.
