Macklemore was once a hugely successful rapper with The Heist (album) that he recorded alongside Ryan Lewis from 2012 launching him to major mainstream success, "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us" were of course both inescapable hits at the time as well as "Same Love" although to a much lesser extent. Macklemore of course had multiple other hits that achieved major success including "White Walls" and "Downtown", But ever since around 2019 it seems that Macklemore has been completely forgotten about in the Mainstream.
What I would like to know is why has Macklemore faded away from the Mainstream and do you think that it is possible that he could end up achieving mainstream success again in the future?

He's fallen into oblivion, where he belongs.

He hasn't put out an album since 2017 or toured since 2018, so it's not surprising that he hasn't been much of a musical presence lately. In the meantime he concentrated on raising a family and playing golf, designing a golf-related clothing line for good measure.
Should he come back musically soon there may be a fair amount of interest and notice, but he isn't likely to return to his 2013-14 level of popularity. Considering how overexposed he was for a while that's not necessarily a bad thing.

And I'm completely serious. People had their swords out for the absolute perfection that is "Downtown" and he could never truly recover.

It's sad how people prefer to harass and attack the winner rather than blaming the system/institution instead. Macklemore didn't buy the award for himself, and clearly didn't want to win. It's not his fault the Grammys - infamously known for disrespecting black artists and failing to acknowledge their art outside the rap/R&B categories - voted for the most mainstream-friendly album by a 'safer' artist. That's why "24K Magic" won AOTY in 2018 when it was the least deserving out of the nominees (and I really enjoy the album). Also why "1989" won over "To Pimp A Butterfly" in 2016 and in my opinion, I believe the snakegate backlash was likely exacerbated by frustrations over her win, especially with the strong racial implications of the Taylor vs. Kanye feud. Now, of course, Macklemore could have better handled the backlash. He was very aware of his position of privilege as a white man in hip hop, but I understand why some felt he was trying too hard by publicly sharing his text message to Kendrick. Either way, the ridicule and vitriol he's gotten since reaches circlejerk levels of pathetic, and as you said, overshadowed great songs like "Downtown". Honestly, he deserved better. He seems like a decent guy, and even if the execution wasn't the best in some of his decisions (be it his handling of the Grammy win or "Same Love" - according to some), he had good intentions. Not to mention he was the one of the few white rappers who didn't so heavily borrow from Eminem's style and formula, and when the alternatives were post-2017 Logic, Machine Gun Kelly, and G-Easy, I'm sure many started to miss Macklemore's refreshing music and persona. Good thing we have Jack Harlow now.

Sorry for the double posting, but I'm amazed at how this thread was made yesterday and today we get this announcement...
It's worth remembering that his last studio album (sans Ryan Lewis) was released in 2017, so it's understandable he hasn't been much of a mainstream presence since. But even then, "These Days" - his collaboration with Rudimental and Jess Glynne, was top 2 in Australia and #1 in the UK, while his feature on Martin Garrix' "Summer Days" was quite successful in European countries and made the Canadian Year-End charts despite a #37 peak.
Delighted to see him back with Lewis, and I'm curious to hear what they have in store this time.

He has 15.5m monthly Spotify listeners and every song in his Popular top-10 (only 3 being The Heist singles) has hundreds of millions of streams. He may have fallen off by the mainstream's perspective but I'd say his core fanbase is pretty damn strong.

Much like Iggy Azalea he handled his huge album era terribly and never could recover the public's interest. His solo album had some good songs tho, like the one with Kesha.
Ryan Lewis is so cute. I'd watch that video
