Ed Sheeran Scores Fourth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 With ‘=’ By Keith Caulfield 11/7/2021 Click to copy www.billboard.com/articles/news/9656431/ed-sheeran-fourth-number-one-album-equals-billboard-200/Plus: Megan Thee Stallion debuts in top five. Ed Sheeran scores his fourth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as his latest studio album, =, bows atop the list (dated Nov. 13). The set, which was released on Oct. 29, earned 118,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 4, according to MRC Data. Over half of that sum was driven by album sales. Sheeran previously led the list with No. 6 Collaborations Project (in 2019), ÷ (in 2017) and x (in 2014). Each of his previous chart-topping albums also debuted at No. 1. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Nov. 13, 2021-dated chart (where = debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on Nov. 9. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Ed Sheeran Returns to 'SNL' With Upbeat '=' Performances After COVID-19 Quarantine: Watch Of =’s 118,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 4, album sales comprise 68,000 (making it the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 46,500 (equaling 61.69 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs) and TEA units comprise 3,500. Sheeran bumps Drake’s Certified Lover Boy down to No. 2 with 67,000 equivalent album units earned (down 10%). Morgan Wallen’s former leader Dangerous: The Double Album falls 2-3 with 42,000 units (down 1%) and Doja Cat’s Planet Her slips 3-4 with 40,000 units (down 4%). Megan Thee Stallion clocks her fourth top 10 charting album on the Billboard 200, as her new release Something for the Hotties debuts at No. 5. The 21-track album compiles previously released freestyles and some unheard tracks from the artist’s vault, along with her recent hit single “Thot S---.” The latter debuted and peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated June 26. Megan Thee Stallion previously hit the top 10 on the Billboard 200 with Good News (No. 2 in 2020), Suga (No. 7, 2020) and Fever (No. 10, 2019). A pair of former No. 1s are next up on the new Billboard 200, as Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour falls 5-6 with 35,000 equivalent album units (down 7%) and YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s Sincerely, Kentrell drops 4-7 with 34,000 units (down 12%). Lil Nas X’s Montero rises 9-8 with 30,000 units (down 9%), The Kid LAROI’s chart-topping F*ck Love climbs 11-9 with 28,000 units (down 4%) and Moneybagg Yo’s former leader A Gangsta’s Pain slides 6-10 with 27,000 units (down 26%).

Interestingly, Drake has had the #1 streamed album every single week since release.
9 weeks #1 in a row in SEA.

Regarding ='s numbers, the pure sales were actually only 2k below No. 6 Collaborations first week, but = had vinyl already available. SEAs for = were actually half of No.6's, while TEAs where 3.5k vs. 10k.

While the numbers are disappointing without a doubt, i'm glad that he managed to grab #1 spot and the album was consumed over 100k. I guess Grafitti will be a transition single meaning they'll wait for BH and Shivers to die and then launch The Queen and The Joker with Taylor in January.

He's selling 35k tracks overall but predictors are saying Bad Habits could sell 50k-60k. So I guess physical sales aren't included on the TEA right?

I would guess Adele since most albums didn’t linger in the top 10 quite as long at the turn of the century… and she scored 84 on ‘21’ alone.
Hard to say most all-time, but Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen have 75+ weeks from just one of their albums. It might be one or the other… or Adele. Then again, the Beatles also spent alot of time in that tier; they have 19 number ones and the majority of them climbed there.

I can't think of any other artists who moved over a million units in a single week around the turn of the century whose new album would debut as low as #155 now. Eminem can still get #1, Britney would get top 5 or maybe #1 if she released a new album (especially right now), Garth and the Backstreet Boys could get top 50. Even Norah Jones debuted at #87 with her last studio album.

Nine albums debut in the top 10, including new releases from Ed Sheeran, Grateful Dead and Mastodon.
Tori Amos achieves her tenth top 10 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart – and highest charting effort in over a decade – as her new album Ocean to Ocean debuts at No. 6 (on the chart dated Nov. 13). The set, which was released on Oct. 29, is the singer-songwriter’s first new full-length studio album since 2017.
Ocean to Ocean sold 9,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 4, according to MRC Data. Amos last went higher on the list in 2007 with the No. 5 debut and peak of American Doll Posse (May 19, 2007-dated chart).
Here’s a recap of all 10 of the singer-songwriter’s top 10s on the Top Album Sales chart: Ocean to Ocean (No. 6, 2021), Native Invader (No. 9, 2017), Unrepentant Geraldines (No. 7, 2014), Abnormally Attracted to Sin (No. 9, 2009), American Doll Posse (No. 5, 2007), The Beekeeper (No. 5, 2005), Scarlet’s Walk (No. 7, 2002), StrangeLittleGirls (No. 4, 2001), From the Choirgirl Hotel (No. 5, 1998) and Boys for Pele (No. 2, 1996). In total, Amos has charted 18 entries on Top Album Sales (dating to her first, Little Earthquakes, in 1992).
Ocean to Ocean is one of nine albums that debut in the top 10 on the latest Top Album Sales chart, which is led by the chart-topping arrival of Ed Sheeran’s latest release, =.
Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now MRC Data. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Ocean to Ocean’s 9,000 copies sold in its first week, physical sales comprise nearly 7,000 (all from its CD releases) and digital sales comprise a little over 2,000 sold. Ocean to Ocean is scheduled to be released on vinyl LP in 2022. Ocean to Ocean also starts at No. 9 on the Top Alternative Albums chart with nearly 10,000 equivalent album units earned. It’s her fifth top 10 on the tally. At No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Ed Sheeran’s = starts with 68,000 copies sold, marking his fourth leader on the list. It’s the second-largest sales week for an album released in 2021 by a male artist, trailing only the opening week of Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album (74,000; chart dated Jan. 23). Sheeran’s = also debuts at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart, with nearly 9,000 sold in its first week. It’s his second No. 1 on Vinyl Albums, following ÷ (five nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 2017 and 2018).
As previously reported, = also enters atop the Billboard 200 chart – launching as Sheeran’s fourth No. 1 on that tally.
Back on Top Album Sales, Grateful Dead scores its best sales week for an album in over 25 years. The band’s latest live archival release, Dave’s Picks, Vol. 40: Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, IN 7/18/90 & 7/19/90, debuts at No. 2 with nearly 23,000 copies sold. (It was issued exclusively as a four-CD set, and limited to 25,000 numbered copies.) Grateful Dead last had an album sell more copies in the week ending Dec. 24, 1995, when Hundred Year Hall sold 25,000.
Dave’s Picks, Vol. 40’s debut at No. 2 on Top Album Sales ties Grateful Dead’s highest rank on the 30-year-old list. The group reached No. 2 four times previously – all with other Dave’s Picks titles.
On the overall Billboard 200 chart, Dave’s Picks, Vol. 40 arrives at No. 13 – granting Grateful Dead its highest debut ever, and highest charting album since 1987’s In the Dark peaked at No. 6 (Aug. 22, 1987-dated chart, fueled in large part by the band’s lone top 10, or even top 40, Billboard Hot 100 hit, the No. 9-peaking “Touch of Grey”). All told, Dave’s Picks, Vol. 40 is the group’s third-highest charting album on the Billboard 200, behind In the Dark and Blues for Allah (No. 12; Oct. 25, 1975).
Dave’s Picks, Vol. 40 also marks Grateful Dead’s landmark 50th top 40-charting album on the Billboard 200. The band continues to have the most top 40 albums among groups since the chart began regularly publishing on a weekly basis in March of 1956. The only acts with more top 40 albums than Grateful Dead are Frank Sinatra (58), Elvis Presley (57), Barbra Streisand (54) and Bob Dylan (51). Dave’s Picks, Vol. 40 additionally enters at No. 1 on Top Rock Albums, marking the act’s fourth leader on the list.
Continuing on Top Album Sales, rock band Mastodon debuts at No. 3 with Hushed and Grim, scoring the group its fifth top 10 on the chart. The new release, which marks the act’s ninth full-length studio album, sold 18,000 copies in its first week in the U.S. Of that sum, 5,000 came via vinyl LP, enabling the set’s No. 3 debut on the Vinyl Albums chart.
The War on Drugs’ I Don’t Live Here Anymore debuts at a career-high No. 4 on Top Album Sales. It’s the first album in over four years for the act, and it enters with 16,000 copies sold. The group previously topped out at No. 5 with the debut week of A Deeper Understanding (Sept. 16, 2017-dated chart). I Don’t Live Here Anymore sold nearly 9,000 copies on vinyl, and it also bows at No. 2 on the Vinyl Albums chart.
Megan Thee Stallion’s Something for Thee Hotties debuts at No. 5 on Top Album Sales with nearly 10,000 sold (all from digital album sales) and Amos’ Ocean to Ocean starts at No. 6 with 9,000.
Joe Bonamassa’s latest studio album, Time Clocks, punches in at No. 7 with nearly 8,000 copies sold. It’s the fifth top 10 for the singer and guitarist. The album also enters atop the Blues Albums chart, where it marks Bonamassa’s record-extending 25th leader on the 26-year-old list.
The Beatles’ former Top Album Sales No. 1 Let It Be rises 9-8 with 7,500 copies sold (down 32%).
Pink Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason debuts at No. 9 on the 30-year-old Top Album Sales chart (a little over 7,000 sold), following its reissue on Oct. 29 in a “remixed and updated” edition. The original album was released in 1987 and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.
Rounding out the new top 10 on Top Album Sales is Pentatonix’s latest holiday album, Evergreen. It bows at No. 10 with 7,000 sold. It’s the 13th top 10 album for the vocal group on Top Album Sales, and of those, seven have been holiday albums.

Their highest-debut ever and their highest charting album since In the Dark, all from a multi-disc live set that was only available on CD and only for a limited time. Look how much it sold in pure sales too! They only need nine more albums to beat a record held by Frank Sinatra, and considering how much their fans love these live album sets and how often they release them, they might break it within the next 1-2 years.

Even Norah Jones debuted at #87 with her last studio album. Hmm, interesting, didn't know they opened with a million back then. I guess they're just unlucky in that from that whole crop, they're just completely irrelevant now; a lot can happen in 20 years. For sure they haven't had any recent crossover hits, and I'm guessing no hits from their core formats as well. I looked at their label (Surefire), whose parent company is Universal Music Group, so it's not some obscure indie label that couldn't give them much promotion, however maybe their label still didn't do a good job and wasn't invested in them.

Yeah, they're definitely the most "of their time" of all those artists, not to mention rock being more niche overall now (compared to rap, pop, country, and AC for the other acts). It's just interesting to see how far they've fallen off in comparison to their millennial A-list contemporaries. But to be fair, there probably aren't many other big rock bands from that time who could make the BB200 at all now other than Foo Fighters and Nickelback.
