Mediabase - Top 40/Mainstream - 2021 Year-End Chart

The 2021 Mediabase chart year has ended. Where did the time go? The tracking period of the chart year was November 8, 2020 through November 6, 2021 (Mediabase has a Sunday through Saturday tracking period). That means that the first published chart for the year was for Sunday November 15th and the last, was for this past Sunday November 7th. As usual, if the tracking period is different, then I'll revise the numbers, accordingly.
Mediabase counts ALL spins, including recurrent play. The only rule I'm aware of is that a track needs to have spent, at least, one week as a "current" during the tracking period in order to be eligible for inclusion in the year-end rankings. Year-long recurrents are excluded, though I have shown where they would have ranked within the top 100. Artist spin-weighting divides spins amongst the performers credited on each track with a greater weight given to lead performers over featured performers. This tabulation won't be an exact match to Mediabase's year-end chart, as I can only compile it with the data that I have available to me (the top 50 currents and recurrents from All Access). However, my projections are, usually, pretty darn close. The official year-end charts are, usually, released around the second week of December. I'll make every effort to link to them, then.

Dua Lipa lands the top song of the year with "Levitating". This massive hit, certainly, had one of the year's most interesting chart runs. After going recurrent for three months, the song started skyrocketing, again, and was allowed back on to the chart, where it exceeded its original #4 peak and spent three weeks at #1. Dua, previously, landed the top song of 2018 with "New Rules", making her only the third act in R&R/Mediabase history to be credited with multiple year-end number ones. Mariah Carey was the first artist to do this, having scored the number one songs of 1990, "Vision Of Love", and 1993, "Dreamlover". Bruno Mars did it next, over two decades later, with the number one song of 2013, "Locked Out Of Heaven", and a featured credit on the number one song of 2015, "Uptown Funk!" by Mark Ronson.
2021 was, certainly, the year of Ariana Grande. She places two songs inside the top 5: her #1 hits "Positions" and "34+35". The Weeknd landed in the top 5, this year, with "Save Your Tears", the follow up to last year's #1, "Blinding Lights". "Blinding Lights" continued to make a strong showing, this year, finishing 2021 at #16. Justin Bieber was, by far, the most prolific artist of the year, making a total of 8 appearances in the top 100: "Peaches", "Holy", "Stay", "Lonely", "Anyone", "Monster", "Hold On", and "Ghost".
Ariana Grande ranks as the top artist of the year. She racked up over 1.2 million spins on the strength of her three big singles (including the two #1s) that dominated the year. Close behind, is Olivia Rodrigo, far and away the year's top new artist. Justin Bieber is the year's top male artist and BTS, the top duo/group. Further down the chart, The Kid LAROI ranks as the top new male artist and Silk Sonic, the top new duo/group.
Mediabase counts ALL spins, including recurrent play. The only rule I'm aware of is that a track needs to have spent, at least, one week as a "current" during the tracking period in order to be eligible for inclusion in the year-end rankings. Year-long recurrents are excluded, though I have shown where they would have ranked within the top 100. Artist spin-weighting divides spins amongst the performers credited on each track with a greater weight given to lead performers over featured performers. This tabulation won't be an exact match to Mediabase's year-end chart, as I can only compile it with the data that I have available to me (the top 50 currents and recurrents from All Access). However, my projections are, usually, pretty darn close. The official year-end charts are, usually, released around the second week of December. I'll make every effort to link to them, then.

Dua Lipa lands the top song of the year with "Levitating". This massive hit, certainly, had one of the year's most interesting chart runs. After going recurrent for three months, the song started skyrocketing, again, and was allowed back on to the chart, where it exceeded its original #4 peak and spent three weeks at #1. Dua, previously, landed the top song of 2018 with "New Rules", making her only the third act in R&R/Mediabase history to be credited with multiple year-end number ones. Mariah Carey was the first artist to do this, having scored the number one songs of 1990, "Vision Of Love", and 1993, "Dreamlover". Bruno Mars did it next, over two decades later, with the number one song of 2013, "Locked Out Of Heaven", and a featured credit on the number one song of 2015, "Uptown Funk!" by Mark Ronson.
2021 was, certainly, the year of Ariana Grande. She places two songs inside the top 5: her #1 hits "Positions" and "34+35". The Weeknd landed in the top 5, this year, with "Save Your Tears", the follow up to last year's #1, "Blinding Lights". "Blinding Lights" continued to make a strong showing, this year, finishing 2021 at #16. Justin Bieber was, by far, the most prolific artist of the year, making a total of 8 appearances in the top 100: "Peaches", "Holy", "Stay", "Lonely", "Anyone", "Monster", "Hold On", and "Ghost".
Ariana Grande ranks as the top artist of the year. She racked up over 1.2 million spins on the strength of her three big singles (including the two #1s) that dominated the year. Close behind, is Olivia Rodrigo, far and away the year's top new artist. Justin Bieber is the year's top male artist and BTS, the top duo/group. Further down the chart, The Kid LAROI ranks as the top new male artist and Silk Sonic, the top new duo/group.
