The last time I felt a song was inescapable was Despacito. Every other big hit since then I feel you could have easily avoided if you don't use radio. I remember having to actively seek out "Old Town Road" to see what the big chart buzz was about. I totally agree, Old Town Road was a cultural behemoth but it wasn't across the board. Radio didn't really grab onto it and it only made it to #3 on Pop before completely collapsing. Despacito was a f**king everywhere, I remember my car at the time didn't have an aux (it was a 2001), so I had to listen to radio and Despacito was always on. Pop radio ate it up, and I worked in a resort destination and everyday Despacito would be playing, it was at parties, I heard it coming out of car windows, the clubs loved. s**t was crazy. Shape of You was a big hit but 2017 always belongs to Despacito to me, just how it felt. Blinding Lights probably would've been just like this but unfortunately the pandemic sorta hindered it's chance of becoming a real juggernaut past it's insane longevity.

If you used TikTok it was inescapable. Many YouTubers were using it in their content. People were making memes about it on Twitter. The only place it wasn't prevalent was radio

neither All Too Well or WANEGBT are country songs but in answer to if it's just Carrie, there's also Lonestar's Amazed With all this talk about whether All Too Well or WANEGBT or whatever song is country, that isn't what the OP asked, they asked when the last time was that a song topped both the Hot 100 and the Country chart (although a country mix of WANEGBT was sent to country radio anyway). Yup! I'd agree WANEGBT and ATW aren't country (even with the country mix) but I'm curious about the rarity of topping both charts at the same time. I guess Lonestar & Taylor Swift this week might two of the only times it ever happened — the only other one I can think of is Islands in the Stream by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers

Considering there's no active Canadian Hot 100 thread to speak of, gonna *try* my luck here: does anyone know if "Mafia" holds the record for biggest single-week downwards movement on that chart? (Fell -78 this week.)

I hear Shape Of You quite often tho.

The only inescapable hits since 2017 for me: Shape Of You, Despacito, Dance Monkey and Blinding Lights. Senorita, Perfect and Old Town Road close but not quite

It was a once in a lifetime mix of events. The pandemic slowed down the charts just as it was at the top of the charts, it was a fun song during dark times.
It's also well produced and well done and that didn't hurt.
I wouldn't classify it as inescapable anyways. It wasn't #1 for that long overall, it just stayed on a consistently popular but not huge level for a long time. If you skipped radio last year you probably only know about it from the headlines over Grammy snubs, the Super Bowl or it's headlines about chart achievements. The streaming era does lend itself to fewer and fewer songs being truly inescapable.
Dance Monkey I can kinda see the wrgument though... by the time I finally knew the song was called Dance Monkey I had already heard it a lot on countless memes, tweets and even radio.

Umm. I can’t at y’all going like 5 years without consistently hearing a hit everywhere. Thankfully I try to always push myself into what’s current whether it’s deliberately or not. Listen to the radio few times a week, go on social media daily, travel, go out to spots/events/etc.
I hear plenty of songs around all platforms/avenues every year.
The ones that seemed inescapable the last few years:
2019 - Old Town Road, Circles, No Guidance, Talk (solely just radio overplay), Suge, Sucker, Bad Guy, 7 Rings, High Hopes, Someone You Loved
2020 - The Box, Life Is Good, Savage, Blinding Lights, WAP, Mood, Rockstar, Don’t Start Now, Adore You, Go Crazy
2021 - Levitating, Save Your Tears, Peaches, Drivers License, Kiss Me More, Fancy Like (damn Apple Bees), Wockesha (lol)
