This album was the first release with Arista Records under Clive Davis' stewardship. While it reversed the mixed chart performances of the Savage album in their key territories, it didn't return them to dominant forces like in the mid-80s (although it was a #1 album in the UK). However, all the singles hit the UK Top 30 and "Don't Ask Me Why" hit the US Top 40. Personal difference caused the Eurythmics to take an indefinite hiatus so this was their last collaboration until Peace ten years later.
For me, personally, I finally listened to this album in full last week and I loved it way more than I was expecting. I was only familiar with Angel, Don't Ask Me Why, and TK&QOA from their Greatest Hits, so there was a lot to like here. "Revival" was an amazing thumper of a lead single and I'm not sure why Clive nixed it for US release. "You Hurt Me (I Hate You)" and "Sylvia" have hooks that stick for very different reasons. Overall, there's a lot of nice variety and the sequencing is well done. I can also see why the bonus tracks from the expanded release were cut, they feel unfinished, though the Dance Remix of TK&QOA is FANTASTIC.
What are your thoughts on this album? What was it like for those who lived through this album cycle in real time?
