‘Encanto’ Soundtrack Returns to No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart Plus: The Lumineers' "Brightside" debuts in top 10.
By Keith Caulfield
01/23/2022www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/encanto-soundtrack-returns-number-one-billboard-200-chart-1235021892/Encanto is the first soundtrack with more than one week at No. 1 since Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born spent four nonconsecutive weeks in the lead in 2018-19. And, Encanto is Walt Disney Records’ first No. 1 album to spend more than a week atop the list since Frozen ruled for 13 nonconsecutive weeks in 2014. (In between Frozen and Encanto, Walt Disney Records topped the chart with the soundtracks to Descendants, in 2015, and Frozen II, in 2019, each for one week.) 01/23/2022 Encanto continues to profit from the popularity of its hit songs, all written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, including “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “Surface Pressure” and “What Else Can I Do?” — all of which were in the top 40 of the most recently published Billboard Hot 100 songs chart (dated Jan. 22). As reported last week, “Bruno” rose 5-4 on the chart, marking the highest-charting song from a Disney animated film since 1995. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by MRC Data. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Jan 29, 2022-dated chart (where Encanto returns to No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Jan. 25. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Encanto’s 104,000 equivalent album units earned, SEA units comprise 84,000 (up 10%, equaling 125.33 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 17,000 (up 4%) and TEA units comprise 3,000 (down less than 1%). Gunna’s DS4Ever falls to No. 2 in its second week (96,000 equivalent album units earned, down 36%), while The Weeknd’s Dawn FM also slips a spot in its second frame (2-3), with 61,000 units (down 59%). A pair of former No. 1s are next on the chart, as Adele’s 30 is a non-mover at No. 4 with 43,000 units (down 10%) and Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album is also stationary at No. 5 with 41,000 units (down 5%). The Lumineers’ Brightside debuts at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, scoring the act its fourth consecutive, and total, top 10 album — the entirety of its charting efforts. The act’s fourth full-length studio album launches with 37,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 26,000 (making it the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 11,000 (equaling 14.33 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. The Lumineers previously visited the top 10 with III (No. 2 in 2019), Cleopatra (No. 1, 2016) and their self-titled full-length debut (No. 2, 2013). The Weeknd places a second album in the top 10 for a second straight week, as his best-of compilation The Highlights slips one spot to No. 7 (34,000 equivalent album units earned, down 6%). Drake’s former leader Certified Lover Boy is steady at No. 8 with nearly 34,000 equivalent album units earned (down 3%), Olivia Rodrigo’s chart-topping Sour falls 7-9 with 33,000 units (down 8%) and Doja Cat’s Planet Her dips 9-10 with 32,000 units (down 4%). Out of curiosity, I wonder if Certified Lover Boy will be bigger than 30 at this point.
30: Week 1 - 839,000 Week 2 - 238,000 Week 3 - 193,000 Week 4 - 183,000 Week 5 - 212,000 Week 6 - 99,000 Week 7 - 57,000 Week 8 - 48,000 Week 9 - 43,000
Certified Lover Boy: Week 1 - 613,000 Week 2 - 236,000 Week 3 - 171,000 Week 4 - 137,000 Week 5 - 110,000 Week 6 - 94,000 Week 7 - 83,000 Week 8 - 74,000 Week 9 - 67,000
(1.912m at Week 9 for 30, and 1.585m at Week 9 for CLB)
Weeknd's Greatest Hits just might spend nearly all year top 10 at this point, especially if it gets updated with more songs....
Craziest thing is that he's not even remotely a top streaming artist. If Drake/Taylor/Post did a similar compilation then it would spend years top 10 and could surpass "21" as the biggest album ever on the chart.

I didn't mean he does bad on streaming by any means, but Drake/Post/Taylor stream higher with their catalog. Drake/Taylor have like 6 albums charting during an average week, and Post has 3 albums that are staples in top 100 since release. "Craziest thing" meaning that another artist could come along and pull this compilation-mess off to an even bigger level. I'm sure we are going to get to a point where an artist just has their whole entire 100+ song discography as a single compilation though and then Billboard will finally feel stupid. We've seen artists re-release albums multiple times, add features mid-week, and put 15+ tracks in a single 're-release'. As usual they are just waiting for a credibility ruining moment to finally react.

Is the UK chart still doing the thing where they normalize the top 2 tracks for an album down to the streams album's average streams? At some point, BB is going to have to figure out a way to level the playing field because the labels trying to one up each other with ways to game the chart is going to harm the industry in the long run.

When comparing 30 and CLB, let's not forget the amount of tracks: 12 vs 21.

When comparing 30 and CLB, let's not forget the amount of tracks: 12 vs 21. This excuse being used outside of the first week or two is always weird to me. It keeps being used with Morgan also. Vast majority are not listening to a 20+ track album from start to finish for months on end. People listen once or twice to any album, add their favorites to a playlist, then revisit those 3-5 songs regardless of an album's length. Logically, if someone was listening to an entire album front to back every single week for months on end though... wouldn't they be the dedicated fan type who plays the album the same amount regardless of tracklist length? If you are a stan who is going to solely play one album for 6 hours straight during your freetime, then regardless of tracklist length, you are still going to be contributing the same amount of consumption for the album. Listening to a 10 track album four times during a 6-hour period, and listening to a 20 track album two times during 6-hour period is still the same amount of streams generated. I would like for some research on if tracklist length has any impact after the initial release.

But isn't it all extra regardless, whether it's 5000 streams or 500 000 streams per song? Hypothetically, if Adele gets 100k streams/song is still half of what Drake is getting with 100k/song.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. If you have 30 minutes today to listen to music on a commute to work and you decide you're only going to listen to 1 album, no matter the album, you are still going to end up contributing essentially the same amount of streams the regardless of tracklist size. You're going to get through about 10~ songs in that 30 minutes, whether it's an album with 12 tracks or 25 tracks. Applying that to stans who listen to an album on repeat all day. If you decided to listen to a 20-track album on repeat for 8 hours, and another person listens to a 10-track album on repeat for 8 hours... you both would still end up streaming a similar total of songs within 8 hours, granted the song lengths are similar. The second person would just repeat the other album more times. If you are suggesting Drake/Morgan/etc have fans who are listening to 20+ songs on repeat for months straight, they are clearly hardcore fans and thus, why would you also not assume they would still be listening to the album on repeat all the time regardless when they have free-time and therefore contributing the same amount of total streams even if the tracklist was smaller. I don’t think tracklist size is making a difference for a 5 month or 12 month old album at this point. An actual issue imo would be if they added a bunch of new songs after or kept changing/re-issuing the tracklist in order to specifically manipulate the charta which Billboard seems to have no issue with. Morgan could add a new lead single and suddenly the album would shoot back to #1, then once his follow-up album was ready it could be added to that album too and then switch to helping it chart. They specifically let songs play musical chairs with multiple albums whether than strictly assigning them to 1 album.

For 25 track albums, song length is probably having a bigger impact than the raw number of tracks. Adele's album is 12 tracks and 58 minutes long. DS4EVER is 19 songs and 54 minutes. 20 2.5-minute songs lets the artist rack up twice as many streams in the same amount of consumer time as 10 5-minute songs. And songs are getting shorter and shorter, driven partly by TikTok but I can't help but think part of it is also chart gaming.

Thanks for posting the charts, Gary.
Haven't been checking the last few weeks, though this week, all top 10 debuts on Top Album Sales charted on the Billboard 200- and No. 11 just made it, coming in right at the bottom.

Plus: Five albums debut in the top 10, including efforts from ENHYPEN, Skillet, Underoath and Casting Crowns.
The Lumineers land its third straight, and total, No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Jan. 29), as the act’s latest release, Brightside, opens atop the list with nearly 26,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 20, according to MRC Data. The Lumineers previously led the list with its last two full-length studio albums, III (in 2019) and Cleopatra (in 2016).
Brightside leads a busy top 10 on Top Album Sales, as the latest efforts from ENHYPEN, Skillet, Underoath and Casting Crowns all debut in the region.
Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now MRC Data. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.
Of Brightside’s 25,600 copies sold in its first week, physical sales comprise 19,100 (15,000 on vinyl LP; 3,800 on CD and 300 cassette tape) and digital sales comprise 6,500 sold. Brightside also launches at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart.
ENHYPEN’s Dimension: Answer arrives at No. 2 with 21,000 sold. Physical sales comprise over 99% of the set’s first-week sales – all from its CD edition. (It’s digital album sold a negligible sum.) Like many K-pop releases, the CD edition of the album was issued in collectible packages (three total, including one Target-exclusive edition), each with randomized internal paper goods (such as photocards and bookmarks).
After eight straight weeks at No. 1, Adele’s 30 falls from the top slot for the first time, dipping to No. 3 in its ninth week on the list (18,000 sold; down 16%).
The soundtrack to Disney’s Encanto posts a gain in sales, rising 4% to 17,000 sold – but is pushed down 2-4, owed to the two debuts at Nos. 1 and 2.
Skillet’s Dominion debuts at No. 5 (12,000 sold), Olivia Rodrigo’s former No. 1 Sour falls 4-6 (9,000; down 13%), Taylor Swift’s chart-topping Red (Taylor’s Version) dips 5-7 (8,000; down 13%), Underoath’s Voyeurist starts at No. 8 (7,000), Casting Crowns’ Healer bows at No. 9 (nearly 7,000) and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours moves 6-10 (6,000; down 18%).
In the week ending Jan. 20, there were 1.729 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 0.8% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.326 million (up 0.6%) and digital albums comprised 403,000 (up 1.3%).
Year-to-date album sales total 5.270 million (down 13.6% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 4.069 million (down 12.2%) and digital album sales total 1.202 million (down 18.2%).
