RoseColoredGirl Ranks and Reviews Every Bridgit Mendler Song!

Bridgit Mendler is, in my opinion, a criminally underrated artist who never really saw a lot of fame in the United States beyond Disney. As of writing this, Bridgit has released only one album, Hello My Name Is..., which performed decently on the charts. It peaked at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and spawned three singles - "Ready or Not," "Hurricane," and "On Top of the World." Only the former two charted in the US (at #53 and #49 respectively), in addition to "Ready or Not" made it to #26 on the pop charts. Despite her minimal success, I feel Bridgit is a very talented lyricist who has a lot of excellent songs. She's also a very inspiring person in general - in addition to singing and acting, she has taken breaks to pursue her education. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at MIT in Massachusetts, studying social technologies that promote inclusive collective governance and citizen engagement. She has stated that her interest in her field of study was inspired by talking to her fans online, which made her want to study how social platforms can be a means for amplifying voices and creating collective action within government decision-making. (You can check out her student website at MIT here) There aren't a lot of celebrities who have used their singing and acting careers to inspire them to advance their education in the way Bridgit has, and I find it incredibly inspiring.

In 2020, I did a full discography ranking and review for my favorite artist, Sabrina Carpenter. I really enjoyed doing it, so I thought it could be fun to do another underrated artist who got their start on Disney. Beginning Tuesday, February 1, I will begin ranking and reviewing Bridgit's entire discography from my least favorite to favorite. Bridgit has 36 songs (49 as of May 10, 2024) in her main discography, including her 15-song debut album, her 4-song EP Nemesis, four non-album singles, six miscellaneous songs she did for various Disney soundtracks, and seven songs from Lemonade Mouth, a Disney Channel Original Movie about a band forming at a high school, in which Bridgit stars as Olivia White, one of the main characters and a singer in the band. Sorry to any fans of "She's So Gone"...I did omit that track from this ranking, since the song only featured Naomi Scott, and not Bridgit. There are also three "bonuses" that will be sprinkled throughout...one duet which Bridgit is a featured artist on, and two sort of miscellaneous tracks I can explain when I get to them. The ranking will end on March 12, when the top song is revealed. Although it seems Bridgit isn't any any hurry to release more music anytime soon, I will continue to rank any new material she puts out among what's already been ranked.

36. Summertime

Standout lyric: “West coast winter breeze as it blows through the palm trees” (I guess it’s kinda good imagery lol, but every lyric here is pretty meh)
Album: The Secret World of Arrietty Soundtrack (2012)

We start off our journey through Bridgit’s discography with a tune featured in the movie The Secret World of Arrietty, where everything sounds generic - the vocals, the production…pretty much everything. The beat is okay, I guess, but the lyrical matter of having the best summer of your life with your bestie, while cute, feels a bit immature. I had never listened to this song before doing these reviews, but it’s not something I would ever want to listen to again. In an interview about the song, Bridgit said “It’s not based on personal experience but I think the whole summertime, kind of cheerful, innocent thing was relatable for the movie and something they liked. The movie is about imagery and there are some good images in that song.” This basically sounds like she didn’t really want to make this song, they just gave her a song and said “hey, sing this!”, which makes it quite unlikeable to me.

35. Hang In There Baby

Standout lyric: “Today's all burnt toast / Running late and dad jokes”
Album: Disney’s Make Your Mark: The Ultimate Playlist (2012)

This is a cute little Disney-esque song, and it’s one of Bridgit’s least known songs. The song is about self-empowerment, and learning to look past the chaos of your mistakes in order to see the beauty in yourself. The rock-sounding production sounds like every other Disney song of this era, and nothing makes this song particularly memorable. Although Bridgit’s vocals are good and it’s kinda cute, it’s completely forgettable and thus why it got its second-to-last place ranking.

34. This Is My Paradise

Standout lyric: “Lemonade, summer games we remember / Colder days with a haze in December” (it’s a cute lyric, but not amazing in any sense)
Album: Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 Soundtrack (2011)

This song was included on the Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 soundtrack. I probably heard this when I was younger, since I saw the movie, but I don’t think I would have recognized it was Bridgit. Although the song is kind of cute, lyrically and production wise, the song is pretty weak. It’s slightly better than “Hang in There Baby” and not bad like “Summertime,” but it’s not memorable at all and not something I’d seek out ever again. Sorry these first few reviews aren’t particularly exciting. They’re all just very generic, forgettable Disney songs to me, and I didn’t feel there was anything special about them. There’s only a couple more not-as-good ones that we have to get through!

BONUS: Wait for Me (Shane Harper feat. Bridgit Mendler)

Album: Shane Harper (2010)

This is another song I’d never heard, and it’s…not good. “Wait For Me” is a duet between Shane Harper and Bridgit Mendler, though it sounds more like Shane’s song, as Bridgit only occasionally sings along with him and has no solo parts. This is why I did not include it in the main rankings. While Bridgit’s voice sounds nice, I really don’t care for Shane’s voice and since she never sings alone in the song, it makes me dislike it. The slow production also feels generic and boring to me. I would recommend skipping this one.

33. Here We Go

Standout lyric: “I said we're tired of this / We're going to stand up for what we believe in”

This is probably my least favorite of the Lemonade Mouth tracks, because it falls into pretty generic Disney music territory. It sounds pretty much like every other song in any Disney movie, and while it is kinda cute, it’s completely forgettable in every aspect. The song lyrically talks about making a change, but expresses this in a very generic way that isn’t memorable. While I don’t hate it, there’s nothing you’d miss out on if you skipped this song.

32. My Song for You (with Shane Harper)

Standout lyric: “Didn't know what to get you, ordinary just wouldn't do”
Album: Disney Channel Holiday Playlist (2012)

This is a cute little duet between her and Shane Harper from Bridgit’s show Good Luck Charlie. I like this so much better than “Wait for You.” Shane’s voice doesn’t sound annoying here, and they sound great together. The piano production feels very peaceful, and their use of winter imagery really pulls you into the song. While there’s not a lot to say with this one, it’s a cute, inoffensive little Christmas song that puts you in the holiday mood.

31. I'm Gonna Run to You

Standout lyric: None
Album: Non-album single (2011)

This song was released for the Good Luck Charlie: It’s Christmas film, which Bridgit starred in. The lyrics and production are a bit simple, and Bridgit’s personality as an artist doesn’t really shine through much here. I do like the simplistic sound of her voice, but it’s not all that memorable and I wouldn’t be sad if I never heard it again. I have no real issues with the song, I’m just indifferent to it and it doesn’t really do much for me.

30. Livin' on a High Wire

Standout lyric: “I've been out on the edge / Breathin' a little bit of fresh air”

This sounds very much like a song you’d hear during the credits of a film, and lo and behold, it is haha. The song generically discusses the progression of the band, but not with any interesting or memorable details. I like it better than “Here We Go,” mainly because Bridgit’s vocals sound pretty good here (they almost sound a bit country-ish, which oddly works despite my dislike of country music). Otherwise, it falls into the same generic zone of “Here We Go” both production and lyric-wise. Adam’s rap particularly sounds generic here, to the point of almost being annoying.

29. City Lights

Standout lyric: “Getting so lost, like a castaway / Feeling so crossed, like a renegade”

So I love the production on this, but the chorus is a bit annoying to me. The repetition of “shine into the night-night-night-night, oh!” gets old very quickly in my opinion. The track talks about finding empowerment in yourself and remembering how strong you are, even when you are feeling weak. She compares one’s confidence to city lights, hence the title of the song, and empowers the listener to feel like they are glowing with self-love. I quite like Bridgit’s vocals overall on the song, and the folk-inspired production on this. Even the minor switch-up in the production at the end sounds excellent, but I just can’t get past the annoying chorus on this one.

28. Forgot to Laugh

Standout lyric: “When I read your face, it's like a screen door / I can see right through, your heart's a window”

This is basically a lighter, less angry version of “Good 4 U” nine years before it came out. This is such an empowering song and the light rock-inspired production fits the tone quite well. Lyrically, the song discusses Bridgit ridiculing her lover, whom she is fighting with, for even entertaining the idea of leaving such a good relationship. Bridgit’s voice sounds a bit higher than normal to me in this particular song, but I thought it still sounded excellent. I really liked her use of metaphor towards the beginning of the song as well, as it really helps you envision the situation. I do have to say it’s a bit odd she mentioned “Reese’s Pieces” twice in the song though haha.

27. Rocks at My Window

Standout lyric: “I turned on the TV, it's all reality / And I don't want to watch stupid people”

Aww…this song makes me really sad. The song reflects Bridgit feeling bored and lonely, and wishing a former lover would appear again. While the first two verses reflect loving and longing for a lover, the bridge majorly switches things up, with Bridgit chanting “rocks” in a cheerleader-style fashion. If there’s one thing Bridgit does an amazing job at, it’s bridges…and this switch up is no different. Despite the sudden switch, it works flawlessly with the song. I’ll admit the standout lyric above made me laugh, as tbh I hate reality TV…I don’t know what people possibly enjoy in all that drama that’s so obviously manufactured and fake. The one minor criticism I have of this song, besides it being sad (as I typically dislike sad songs), is her pronunciation of “window” feels a bit off, which is particularly emphasized at the end of the song. I think odd pronunciations of words can be done well in songs (“noncha-lant-a-ly” in Sabrina Carpenter’s “Sue Me” being a great example) but it felt a bit offputting here.

26. More Than a Band

Standout lyric: “Everything changes, but one thing is true / Understand we'll always be more than a band”

Lyrically, the song talks about Lemonade Mouth as a whole, and how it’s more than just a band; it’s also their friendship. This song is representative of their vow to always be there for each other, and to always be close friends. It’s a very sweet and simple song, and the production is very chill, making for an enjoyable listen. The band really has excellent vocal cohesion in their harmonies, and none of the members sound out of place.

25. Somebody

Standout lyric: “I'm so tired of being invisible / But I feel it, yeah, like a fire below the surface”
Album: Lemonade Mouth (2011)

This song begins with Bridgit talking about feeling invisible, and like no one truly notices her. However, the song quickly progresses and turns into an empowering jam about letting your true self show, and making a commitment to not apologizing for who you are to anyone, including yourself. At least at that point in her discography, I think Bridgit’s vocals sounded stronger than they ever had before on this song. I quite like the progression of Bridgit’s voice going from being quieter in the verses to getting louder and stronger in the chorus. It’s a cool metaphorical representation of Bridgit going from feeling like she doesn’t matter to knowing that it doesn’t matter how others judge her if she chooses to unapologetically show who she is. The guitar production is pretty generic, but it works well for what it is. I enjoyed this song, even if it does fall in the more average range compared to some of the other Lemonade Mouth songs.

BONUS: When She Loved Me

Album: Disneymania 7 (2010)

This is a cover of Sarah MacLachlan’s “When She Loved Me,” from Toy Story 2. What really intrigues me about this cover is Bridgit’s high vocals here. Her vocal register tends to be a bit lower usually, so I was surprised to hear the extent of her vocal range. She did an amazing job covering this song and capturing all the emotion of the original and this is a cover I’d recommend.

24. Turn Up the Music

Standout lyric: “They don’t have to understand, but we’ll make them if we can”
Album: Lemonade Mouth (2011)

It’s a simple song about just losing yourself in the music, but it’s still such a jam! Bridgit’s vocals sound excellent with her fellow band members. While it’s far from the deepest song in Bridgit’s discography, I would argue sometimes the simple songs can be just as enjoyable. The chill production and carefree lyrics here make this song memorable, when it could have been very generic.

23. We Can Change the World

Standout lyric: “We’re gonna do everything we can”
Album: The Very Best of Disney Channel Volume 2 (2012)

This easily could have been another corny Disney song that ranked at the bottom, but I thought Bridgit did a number of things here that elevated the song. Her voice was very powerful, which complemented the uplifting production and lyrics about taking your power to change the world. She provides a lot of variety in her vocals here, raising it to a very high octave mid-chorus, and I thought it sounded amazing. Particularly the way she enunciates “everything” makes the chorus stand out. The song leaves you feeling very empowered when it’s finished, which ultimately earned this its place here rather than below with the group of other Disney soundtrack songs. I will say that's a weird thumbnail pic on the video though lol.

22. Love Will Tell Us Where to Go

Standout lyric: “We're flying with the birds and the world's so bright, it hurts”
Album: Hello My Name Is… (2012)

I love the fluid nature of this song! It’s very hopeful, but also kind of ominous and a bit eerie production-wise. The lyrics even make it a bit sad. Despite all the different feelings going on in this song, I think the song is perfectly structured. Bridgit flawlessly delivers her lyrics, striking sort of an ominous-yet-inspiring tone to accentuate the production. The song lyrically delves into being uncertain about the future, and leaves it open ended as to whether that’s a relationship, or the future in general, but following the path of love to guide you along the way. Bridgit is so good at these pre-choruses and bridges! Her flow on both of these parts, particularly the rapping in the pre-chorus, works so well and just goes to demonstrates Bridgit’s strong vocal abilities. The uncertain “runaway” notion in this song has will pull you in, and the catchy lyrics will continue to keep you interested all throughout the song.

Also, I know this is going to make the zero people that seem to be following this very sad lol, but I'm going to take a short break from doing this tomorrow to write a review for Sabrina's new song, "Fast Times," which comes out tomorrow. 21. Undateable

Standout lyric: “If you told me what you want / Oh I bet that I'm a good fit”
Album: Non-album single (2015)

This is one I had never listened to before prior to these rankings. I admittedly didn’t have high expectations for the song given it’s just a theme song for the show Undateable, which Bridgit plays a starring role in, but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very cute little song, and the bouncy production is so much fun. Even for someone who has never seen Undateable, the theme song worked very well on its own. The “don’t look at me like that, Ron” line is odd, but I’m sure it fits in with the show somehow. For the most part, except the aforementioned line, the song doesn’t require any knowledge of the show to enjoy it, which made this rank higher for me than it probably would have otherwise. It has a simple, playful message of not feeling romantically desirable. While it’s not explicitly stated, the song is so playful that it leaves you feeling that Bridgit is okay with her lack of romantic qualities, which I thought was neat. Bridgit’s vocals sound as good as ever, although the rap is pretty corny. It’s so bad that it’s honestly funny, which makes me not mind it. I can’t say there are a lot of theme songs recorded by famous artists that I would listen to again, but this is good enough that it’s one of the few I wouldn’t mind revisiting sometime in the future.

20. 5:15

Standout lyric: “Never thought in May, when we came to June / I would feel this way about you”
Album: Hello My Name Is… (2012)

Oh my gosh, this song makes me so sad…I really don’t have anything against this song other than that, so I feel bad ranking it so low, but alas, that’s how I feel lol. The haunting, grungy production goes along great with Bridgit’s depressed, ominous vocals. Lyrically, the song talks about realizing a person means more to you than you thought, and feeling an intense urgency to know what your lover feels immediately. She gives her lover 16 minutes to chase after her, before she leaves him forever. The sense of urgency and raw need is incredibly intense in this song, and is arguably Bridgit’s darkest song. I’m relistening to all of these as I review them, and I actually started tearing up a bit listening to this. The song is amazing for its atmosphere, and while I feel bad about it, the only reason it’s so low is because it’s so sad I can’t listen to it without getting super emotional lol.

BONUS: How to Believe

Album: Disney: Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust (2012)

This is our final bonus! I really debated whether to put this song in the main rankings or not, since I didn’t include the Sabrina song on the same album Disney: Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust in the main rankings on that countdown, so I guess I won’t include this one in the main rankings either. This song is…interesting…in the sense Bridgit’s voice basically sounds unrecognizable here. The soundtrack was made for a preschool Tinker Bell show, so all of the artists sound a bit off here. The song is…cute, I guess. It’s really hard for me to get into this one because it’s just so in-your-face kiddy, both production-wise and lyrically. In fact, I would argue listening to a song intended for preschoolers as a 24 year old made me question all my life choices up to this point hahaha. I guess it’s cute, but not something I’d ever listened to before or will ever listen to again.

19. Quicksand

Standout lyric: “After just that time when my eyes got their fix”
Album: Hello My Name Is… (2012)

This is another super vulnerable song from Bridgit. Lyrically, it discusses hopelessly falling for someone, and feeling completely consumed by their love. The slow ballad-like production makes it feel at first like it could perhaps be sad, but Bridgit keeps us on her toes as she continues throughout the song. The lyrics are a bit ambiguous, as the lyrics make it sound like the relationship Bridgit is speaking about a current relationship, rather than lamenting a past one. I love how this song leaves it open for interpretation of whether Bridgit is enjoying the feeling of being consumed by smittenness for someone, or if she is feeling trapped and losing herself. What truly makes a good piece of art is leaving it open for interpretation in my opinion, and Bridgit definitely did that here. The evolution of the production at the very end with the addition of the drums is very intriguing to me. In theory, it should seem out of place, but it really works here. It’s quite a unique song, and I really appreciate it for its lack of clarity, as love is not always a clear feeling and can lead to a lot of uncertainty.

18. Hold On For Dear Love

Standout lyric: “I been terribly human, using you like a punching bag”
Album: Hello My Name Is… (2012)

What makes this song so excellent is Bridgit’s powerful vocals. Despite this being such a vulnerable song about a relationship reaching its breaking point, I would argue her vocals are stronger and more empowered on this song than any other on the album. Many of us have reached stressful points in a relationship where it feels like it’s going to end, so in that way - at least to me - the lyrics are particularly relatable. The song also delves beyond a simple lover’s quarrel by Bridgit admitting her own faults in the situation. The standout lyric above really stands out to me: “I been terribly human, using you like a punching bag.” Bridgit’s lyrics demonstrate that no one is perfect, and all of us have done things we wish we wouldn’t have. It’s easy to get more short-tempered than you should in stressful situations, and I like how the song explored this topic. Many songs about relationship fights blame the other person, so I really like the vulnerability and relatability of Bridgit pointing out that sometimes, both people are at fault in their own ways. While it’s not my favorite Bridgit song, I love how deep the song goes in exploring this topic.

17. Do You Miss Me At All

Standout lyric: “In this room, you're the wallpaper / Sticks like glue into my memory”
Album: Nemesis EP (2016)

This song is so chaotic and confusing, but I love it lol. At first, it seems like it’s going to be a slow ballad in the intro, but then the beat kicks in and it turns into a smooth R&B jam. Bridgit’s crooning vocals feel reminiscent of some of the songs on her debut album, specifically “Blonde” comes to mind. Like with “Quicksand,” Bridgit gives us minimal details on what this curiosity about her former lover stems from. This is what I love about this song - she keeps so many details very ambiguous, which arguably increases the ability for the listener to interpret her words, and even apply it to their own lives. Almost all of us probably have someone who is no longer in our lives - whether it be a former love interest or a friendship that didn’t work out - and can relate to wondering whether the other person still ever thinks about us. I commend Bridgit for tapping into the art of strategic ambiguity, and really enjoy this song. I hate putting something from this EP so low for how good it is, but it just shows how good Bridgit's songs are!

16. Determinate

Standout lyric: “Okay, it's Wen and I'm heaven-sent, music like a veteran”
Album: Lemonade Mouth (2011)

There are very few songs that start out so depressing and hopeless, then turn into a club-like anthem, but no song does it better than this one. “Determinate” starts out with Olivia - Bridgit’s character in Lemonade Mouth - feeling afraid of being herself on stage to the point of tears. She quickly turns it around and uses her fear to empower herself by admitting her feelings and embracing the fact that she is scared, which in turn, makes her become confident. The sudden switch in the production - to a sad piano ballad to an uptempo pop rock song - is so well executed, and allows you to really feel the change in Olivia’s confidence in the film. Bridgit’s vocals sound so emotional and like she’s truly into her role, which is what makes this song sound as good as it does. The flow of Adam Hick’s rap in the third verse sounds excellent, and fits into the song well without feeling forced in. Personally, this is one of my favorite Lemonade Mouth songs, and it remains memorable to me due to its sudden tone change.

15. Top of the World

Standout lyric: “You're holding me close / Got tingling toes tonight”

This is such a cute little bop! Lyrically, the song discusses falling in love, and the feeling of empowerment one experiences in a relationship when you know you’re truly happy. While the song itself is very catchy, the chorus is an absolute earworm. Bridgit’s voice sounds amazing all throughout, and I particularly liked how she struck a bit of a higher register than normal for certain notes in this song. The inclusion of the piano outro was also perfect, and makes the end of the song feel very heavenly.

14. All I See Is Gold

Standout lyric: “Left to your own devices / A master of disguises”

Those who know me will know that I am not typically a fan of sad songs, but even I can’t deny how beautiful this song is. In the song, Bridgit laments lost love and wishing she were still with someone who no longer wants to be with her. The song is heartbreaking in so many ways, particularly through Bridgit’s raw confession that she is still smitten with her lover and puts them on a pedestal, despite knowing she will never see them again. The slow piano production accentuates Bridgit’s vulnerable vocals, and plunges the listener into potentially relatable lyrics that pull them deep into regret about all the things they wish they could have done with a former love interest. It remains one of my favorite Bridgit songs due to how breathtaking and vulnerable she is in the song.

13. Postcard

Standout lyric: “What if he's into fashion or if he likes ballet? Doesn't get the time of day”
Album: Hello My Name Is… (2012)

This song has such an incredible message and it should have been on the main version of the album, not just the deluxe version. While you could write this off as a cheesy Disney girl empowerment anthem, I think this goes above the typical “be proud of being a woman” song. In the first verse, Bridgit points out stereotypes that are thrust onto girls - that they don’t like playing with race cars or participating in sports, that they don’t like getting dirty, and that they’re weak. Where it goes beyond the typical “girl empowerment” anthem is in the second verse, when she reverses it and talks about harmful stereotypes that are thrust onto boys and men - that they shouldn’t dress feminine, they shouldn’t care about their appearance, and that they shouldn’t like “girly” things (she gives ballet as an example). The stigmatization of femininity in men is absolutely awful, and needs to be talked about more. I was really happy that Bridgit talked about empowering both men and women alike by breaking down harmful stereotypes. The inspiring production complements this perfectly, and Bridgit’s vocal delivery is flawless as she challenges haters that their judgment only makes her more determined to be who she is, rather than who they want her to be. I think Bridgit does an excellent job with these types of empowering songs, and this is one of my favorite empowerment anthems of hers.

Also, as a side note, I look all of these up on Genius just to ensure that I’m getting the right lyrics for the “standout lyric” (I tend to mishear lyrics a lot lol). For some reason, their description of the song says: “The song is about when she gets separated from the other person, and she wanted to be with him, so she sends a postcard to send her love and how much she misses him.” I’m not sure what song they were listening to, but I guarantee it wasn’t this one lol. I guess at least it’s not as bad as the Sabrina Carpenter “Right Now” page (I mentioned it in my Sabrina rankings) which very oddly lists the song as being about “paying attention because the day after today will actually be called tomorrow” lmao.

12. Library

Standout lyric: “I remember when we were in the yellow building, never friends / Same hair and the same old crew”

This is kind of an interesting song. I love Bridgit’s lyrical flow on the song, as she processes through all her regrets about a relationship, while wishing her former love interest with her. The song is a bit slow for my liking, but it’s not boring. It’s hard to describe my feelings on this song, as I don’t hate it, but I also kind of wish it had a little more to it? At the same time, I also love how unique this is. I like the range of production in the song, where it goes from being very slow to slightly sped up. The haunting echo in the bridge is really neat as well. I also enjoy the experimental feeling of this song, and how it tells such a vivid, specific-feeling story. It was initially my least favorite song from Nemesis, but it’s really grown on me for how unique it is.

11. We're Dancing

Here is our final song that didn't quite make the top 10! I relistened to all of these songs while writing my reviews, and the first songs that came up when searching this on YouTube was “We’re Dancing with Wags the Dog” by The Wiggles, and “We’re Dancin’ on Your Corpse” lol. This is the first of three deluxe edition tracks on Hello My Name Is… None of these tracks were included on the standard edition of the album. Whilst simplistic, the production is the defining element of this song. I love the dreamy, dance-pop sound this song has, and would love to see Bridgit make more songs in this vein if she continues to put out music in the future. Bridgit’s voice sounds amazing with the production. The lyrics are a tad simplistic, as it’s just talking about falling in love with someone while dancing with them, but overall it’s a very sweet song that I wish were on the standard edition of the album.
