Some of the extras been on my mind for a while:
MC Lyte - "When In Love" - Between this and "Poor Georgie", I can tell she was going for a wider audience similar to Salt-N-Pepa.
Monie Love - "It's A Shame (My Sister)" - I enjoy both the original and the Cool As..mix with the Sister Sledge sample. The latter is much more fun and funkier.
B Angie B can saaaang. I want to add that she elevated "Juicy Gotcha Krazy" from two years prior.

I was thinking about those two songs this morning. I have memories of hearing them on the radio. And I'm quite surprised "Let's Talk About Sex" didn't perform well on the R&B chart.

Man, revisiting the music of my youth and adolescence only reminds me just timeless Mariah Carey is - not only as a vocalist, but also as a songwriter. That combination is what elevates songs of hers that have similar stylings to some of the songs on this rankdown. I either forgot some of these songs existed in the first place or legit don't remember them. OK, that last sentence was extra salty, but re-listening to some of these really put me in a nice vibe, so I am happy with everything. Also, uptempos from this time period are dated AF and do NOT age well, in general. I make an exception for some though, like Johnny Gill. On the plus side, the current generation of singers - both male and female - simply cannot hold a candle to the singers of the 80s or 90s. They really SOLD what could be forgettable, average songs with their voices alone. It's wild that the likes of Tracie Spencer could be considered a lightweight when compared to Mariah, Vanessa, Phyllis, etc. but she could blow these girls today out of the water without even breaking a sweat. Regarding sexuality, I get why it was absolutely LETHAL and career-ending back then to come out as gay or sexually fluid, but it saddens me to hear men like Tevin Campbell, Luther Vandross, Keith Washington, and Freddie Jackson (to say the least) being forced to suppress their true selves so the record labels could stay rich. Sure, they got careers out of it, but still...such a bargain with the devil. It seems that they were, at least, protected by the women in the industry. Obviously, they were all in on the secret. I'm sure the slumber parties were LIT though! One of my faves on this list is by an artist I never really liked, honestly, but...something about this song captured my soul. Y'all will tank it because it's extremely mushy, but I was a hopeless romantic as a child. I grew out of that phase, Thank God. That said, there are at least 20 MUCH stronger songs on this list, so I wouldn't be surprised if it went out early. One of the songs here is SO overrated and I can't stand the artist, so I wish it would leave early, but it wouldn't surprise me if it wins, LOL. OMG, I forgot that BeBe & CeCe were out here slaying mainstream radio with their Jesus Jams. I grew up listening to them and I remember buying the greatest hits on CD.
Thanks for putting this together! Other than my bottom 3, I liked everything!
Lastly, the world was ROBBED of a Mariah x Peabo collab.
