No major losses this set, that's good.

The First Time might be the only time I've ever heard a song manage to simultaneously choose chaos and blandness. Changing keys FOUR times before you hear anyone sing a single note (and continuing to jump back and forth among those keys as the song progresses) yet being utterly forgettable from start to finish is quite a feat. I wouldn't be surprised if the composers were inspired by Never Gonna Let You Go by Sergio Mendes - both songs were #1 hits so I guess if all that modulating ain't broke, don't fix it - but this is a formula I could do without.

I'm dying at the Surface comments. lol. I've been thinking about this for a while, but it amazes me how they are able to balance the R&B, pop, and AC audiences with their hits. I've always assumed they were strictly for the R&B crowd.

I assume "The First Time" was a hit at weddings and school dances back then.

Surface did make the bop known as "Falling In Love", so I have to at least give them credit for that. Color Me Badd, on the other hand...nothing would be lost if their master tapes went up in flames.

Toné! before landing a deal with Giant Records. Their first single, "I Wanna Sex You Up", was recorded for the soundtrack to New Jack City and was one of the biggest hits of 1991, topping the R&B chart and peaking in the Top 5 on the Hot 100.
