I'm indifferent on the Tom's Diner cover but hot take there's a reason Beggin' and Put Your Records On were more successful with their modern covers — it's because they're both better than the originals when it comes to ‘Tom’s Diner’ , Giorgio Morodor’s cover featuring Britney Spears is quite underrated

To me, nothing will top the absolute worst cover song like Calum Scott’s Dancing On My Own. That song can rot. that cover sounded gimmicky like something they’d do on American Idol or something

To me, nothing will top the absolute worst cover song like Calum Scott’s Dancing On My Own. That song can rot. At least Calum Scott has redeemed himself in my books by making the excellent Where Are You Now with Lost Frequencies. Why America hasn’t made that a huge hit like everywhere else in the world I will never know.

I... like both Dancing on my Own versions. Obviously Robyn's is a classic and the other one isn't but it was an interesting take.

But honestly the Tiësto remix makes it a great song again

Has anyone ever done a comparison of how many total songs hit the top ten each year? I wonder if it's actually fallen a ton due to songs lasting so much longer. I think the fact that the big hits are spending so much longer in the top 10 is kinda evened out by the fact that way more album tracks hit the top 10 now than ever before. So many songs debut in the top 10 and spend a week there off of big album releases

I suppose you can count the # of multi week t10s each year.
Because I kinda care, a sample: 2021 35ish 2016 39ish 2011 43ish
So has gone down somewhat. Not "a ton."

I'm a bit surprised it isn't more extreme, but thanks for doing the legwork! Were you counting any song that was top ten, or just songs that were new to the top ten in the calendar year? (i.e., are songs that straddle multiple years counted more than once)

(i.e., are songs that straddle multiple years counted more than once) You also have to take into consideration the fact that some years will have less top 10 hits than others simply because major acts didn't release singles/albums that year. Since the start of the streaming era: 2015: 40 top 10 hits 2016: 42 top 10 hits 2017: 50 top 10 hits 2018: 60 top 10 hits 2019: 43 top 10 hits 2020: 62 top 10 hits 2021: 59 top 10 hits Take 2022 for instance, so far this year, there have been 8 new top 10 hits with only 2 of those being top 10 debuts. The last chart week a new top 10 hit was recorded was the February 19 chart week. We've had 4 chart weeks since then with 0 new top 10 hits. If the year continues on with major acts failing to release new singles/albums, 2022 might record the lowest number of new top 10 hits since the start of the streaming era.

We really could have used Sweetest Pie or a Lil Durk debut to get rid of Bad Habits in the Top 10:

I swear to God, if Super Gremlin turned out to be the next #1...I'm seriously gonna attack someone. I would rather have Heat Waves on #1 until the middle of freakin' June than having Kodak mother-frickin' Black on the top spot.

Wait, that’s the Spotify streaming for an entire album? Oh how the times have changed. Six months ago, that would not have been good enough for #1 and #2 on the Spotify songs chart, as Stay and Industry Baby were streaming 12M, 13M on normal weeks. Wow, the Spotify collapse is starting to remind me of digital sales in 2016.

That top 5 is a margins game no matter how it's sliced. At least consensus is building that Enemy should finally make the top 10 this week.

Yeah, it does look like a margins game. Good on ID for making the top ten and Woman doesn't look too far behind.

On the topic of songs titled Woman, it was 41 years ago this week when John Lennon’s Woman peaked at #2 (it finished at #2 on the 1981 YE). Can Doja’s Woman do one better in 2022?

On the 1981 thing, which YE chart was that?

I'd rather have Super Gremlin be #1 than Stay jumping back up to #2, and holy christ I can't believe Bad Habits is slated to still be in the Top 10. At least Enemy is on its way with Woman following close behind.

Fun fact - during a number of years AT40 followed Billboard Hot 100 - AT40 did their own year end charts (usually different time periods from the magazine)
On the AT40 version in 1981 -- Woman was #15
Yes on Billboard it was #21

Given the way that this chart is going we'll probably see Woman peak in July or something.

To me, nothing will top the absolute worst cover song like Calum Scott’s Dancing On My Own. That song can rot. that cover sounded gimmicky like something they’d do on American Idol or something It literally was like that. It was his audition song for Britain’s Got Talent.
