MRC Data (formerly Neilsen SoundScan) has once again changed its name. It's now going by Luminate. Uggh this is annoying and will confuse things even more, though if it leads to cheaper, more accesible, and better transparency with data, I'd be all for it. The Soundscan name though is what has stuck and is really hard to erase. I actually work in the industry, and many of us still use that name.

Ed Sheeran has another new project coming out soon, the first single is dropping on the 25th. He calls it a "curveball" (he talks briefly about it around 3:50 in the video). The rumor is that this will be another collaboration project, hence the pictures floating around of him with J Balvin and Kodak Black.
Bold move starting a new era while having 3 active top 10 singles globally, but hey, why not add a 4th.

I genuinely didn't know Nielsen SoundScan changed their name at all, let alone twice now

How is the song of the new Disney (Pixar) film doing? Could it chart on the Hot100. It's hilarious.

And even this one feels forgotten at this point. I was watching a college basketball game on Sunday, when one of the announcers was making a reference to Pushin P, and I almost forgot about the song for a second.

Stay got a huge gain today on radio and it looks like Sacrifice peaked on radio. This is one of the main reasons why radio is declining. They are so reluctant to play newer songs and give more power to songs that has already been on heavy rotation since the summer of last year because anything with Biebers name is bound to get heavy plays. It’s not a new thing that radio overplays songs but holy crap this is too far. It’s not helping with the fact that people are still streaming Stay while there are countless of other new songs that is waiting to be streamed. Spotify streams are at an all time low and other streaming services refuse to share their numbers. At this rate, the charts are dead. It almost sounds like people just still want to hear "Stay."

The Weeknd's consecutive appearances in Top 10. February 29 - December 5, 2020: 41 weeks (Mostly Blinding Lights) January 9 - July 31, 2021: 30 weeks (Mostly BL & Save Your Tears) Not comparable with the four I've already mentioned. Cool! Based on this data, Christmas week is to be blamed. So he probably break Katy's record for additional 2 weeks.

Blinding Lights actually returned to the Top 10 (at #7) on the week of 12/19/2020, after falling to #11 on 12/12/2020.

Exactly. The radio was trying to phase out songs like Heat Waves, Levitating, and Stay, but clearly, people still want to listen to those songs.

At least he’ll get to be in the most consecutive weeks on the hot 100 club if the radio holds on to one of his songs. ORN is obviously one contender but SYT might be too if we continue down the trend of a stagnant top 20 throughout the year and therefore it doesn’t die already.

meh. that article complains that Ariana Grande, "one of the most successful new gen pop starlets" has "yet to score a number-one hit" as a reason why pop stars are "dying." later that year, mere months after that article, Ariana Grande earned her first of 5 (so far) number-one hits, "thank u, next," and everyone was talking about it. a few months later, she became the first solo artist in history to hold the top three (all by herself!) on the Hot 100. last year, Olivia Rodrigo became the first artist ever to have two singles from a debut album start at number-one on the Hot 100. she also became the first artist to have her first four official singles debut in the Top 10. Lil Nas X and Doja Cat very much have been dominating the pop radio and streaming space. "That's What I Want" just returned to #1 on pop radio, while "Need To Know" and "Woman" are both in the Top 6. the three songs also boast an impressive 1.75 billion streams on Spotify combined. I think there are two things happening: "Pop stars" don't look like what they used to (sort of).
I think there's an argument to be made for Drake being the biggest pop star, then we have the likes of Doja Cat, The Weeknd, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X... artists from various ethnic backgrounds and sonic influences. Even the white pop girl of the moment Dua Lipa comes from an Albanian and Muslim background. we need to give up the idea that you need to be a Britney/Xtina/Madonna/Gaga/Katy/Taylor to be a pop star. This is not to say there weren't any non-white pop stars before, but I think a lot of people nowadays like to erase current stars just because there isn't a Madonna-inspired pop girl on the come up. People do not care about celebrities as much as they used to (and there is way too many of them--so the attention is divided further).
I think this is both a result of social media bringing celebrities closer to their audiences (which means they don't have to be EVERYWHERE to be popular and connect with people), and the barrier to entry for being a "celebrity" reaching new lows. People also have access to so much more music—they don't have to rely on what mass retail stores carry in physical copies to listen to music, or commit to buying music on iTunes to listen (which limited people to buying what they already knew). This is anecdotal, but I sure as hell don't care about celebrity gossip, seek out paparazzi photos, or really care about what my favorite musical artists do anymore. I follow a good chunk of them on social media, and that mostly covers it for me. Then I go see them live in concert if I can. I don't care if Olivia Rodrigo gets lip fillers or Lil Nas X uses poppers or Dua Lipa folds her toilet paper. But those are the types of stories that would keep "pop stars" in the headlines back in the day. Edit: sorry for the essay lmao it's nothing personal, I just had thoughts and kept writing. I agree but also the way we consume media has changed. Magazines at one time would have big photoshoots for music stars in the past and recently that gone down as magazine companies are slowly fading away due to the digital trend currently. MTV/CMT/VH1 moving away from their main focus on music over the last decade has changed the landscape for music as award shows aren't the main focus to debut a song anymore. Also nowadays with Spotify you can have access to listen to any pop music from around the world, before in general there wasn't that much competition for major label stars as there was a decade ago.

I have noticed how I've started streaming the big hits less and less over the years. I still play them, obviously, but to a much lesser extent. My most played songs of this month would be bbycakes, ahhh ha and charmander, and they're far from being huge hits. It could be that with the internet and streaming, people have learned how to find music they really like and enjoy without having to rely on the major playlists/stations/etc

Okay, can we please stop with these shitty rock covers becoming hits? Did we not learn anything from Beggin' last year not to ruin anymore classics?

That cover is a torture.. Yes, it's "different" but lacks everything that made the original so great.

I don’t know, maybe we should blame Tom Brady announcing his return from retirement for Tom’s Diner smashing. It’s pretty odd that the cover has been around for almost 3 years and it didn’t smash until after the announcement. (I guess people got bored this weekend and tried typing Tom Brady’s name on Google after the announcement, and Tom’s Diner popped up as one of the suggestions.)

See, this is what happens when all the major pop acts are dormant and so few other artists are getting the promo runs to replace them - we get absolute crap from no-names rising to the top.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go listen to Centuries by Fall Out Boy to cleanse my pallet…

Has anyone ever done a comparison of how many total songs hit the top ten each year? I wonder if it's actually fallen a ton due to songs lasting so much longer.

I'm indifferent on the Tom's Diner cover but hot take there's a reason Beggin' and Put Your Records On were more successful with their modern covers — it's because they're both better than the originals

To me, nothing will top the absolute worst cover song like Calum Scott’s Dancing On My Own. That song can rot.
