"You're Not In Kansas Anymore" is flawless. Too bad it couldn't have at least made the top 20.
"The Beaches of Cheyenne" is such an awful song to me that I've never even paid attention to the lyrics before, lol. I hate his voice but he does have some good songs, but this isn't one of them IMO.

This, lol. I never even noticed the goofy lyrics about oceans in Wyoming because I was too focused on the ear-splitting vocals.

Both “Bigger Than the Beatles” and "Home" are great songs that should have made it to the #25. I'm just hoping that my damn #120 would leave before the top 20

Oh, I have put together the first look back at the winners of the Academy of Country Music Awards from 1996 which you'll find below the fold. I'm still trying to find videos from the CMA Awards that year, but so far I haven't had much luck. We'll see what I can come up with for that lol.

I think of The Beaches of Cheyenne as mid-tier Brooks, so this ranking feels right. I know Brooks does have his haters here, but at least the difference in placement for this and The Change shows a better song by him can rank pretty high.

Good Friday morning, y'all! I'm going to kick things off with revealing the first three songs to exit the top 25 which unfortunately will see not one, but TWO participants losing their #1 song right out of the gate. What could it be?! Let's find out...

Originally recorded by B. W. Stevenson and released in August 1973, Brooks & Dunn covered "My Maria" for their fourth studio album Borderline upon which it was released as that album's first single. The song went on to become their tenth Number One country hit where it sat atop the charts for three consecutive weeks. In addition, their version was the number one country song of 1996 according to Billboard, and won the duo its second Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Vocal Group or Duo. This not only maintained its top 20 status for the majority of its run, but also was an early top 10 contender with it picking up its six highest rankings in the first half. That included a pair of top 10s from both myself and austin as well as a pair of top 15s from ccarter1023 and someguy. It faced a bit of headwind as it head into the last half, however, with five of its lowest rankings all coming in then. Even still, no one had yet ranked this down in their bottom 30 which allowed this to maintain its top 20 status. That is until the very end as both .indulgecountry and LBTrocks yet again make their presence be known with a pair of bottom 30s and the latter being a bottom 10. That eventually pushed this back outside of the top 20 altogether which was the first time over the course of the rankdown. Unfortunately that means both nathanalbright and bigd79 become the next participants to depart with their #1 song.

“My Maria” is one of the most iconic songs of the 90s, everyone knows it. I would have liked to see it Top 10 in this for sure.

"Every Light in the House" was released in August 1996 as the second single from Trace Adkins' debut album Dreamin' Out Loud and was his first Top 5 single on the country charts where it peaked at #3. While this did manage to sneak into the top 20 early on thanks to a top 3 ranking from nathanalbright, it was mostly only a top 40 contender for the first half of its run. Five of its highest rankings would call come within the last half, however, which it was able to build upon enough to slide back into the top 30 before coming to a rest just inside the top 25. This garnered a whopping twelve top 50 rankings overall with a handful of those all being inside the top 30. Of those, Cody Wants Out... also loses a top 5 while CoJoFan departs with a near top 10.

"If I Were You" was released in February 1996 as the third single from Terri Clark's self-titled debut album and was her third consecutive Top 10 hit on the country charts. Of the songs to exit thus far, this had one of the more consistent runs which saw it making a few appearances inside the top 20 before setting back some near the last quarter of the rankdown. A whopping fourteen participants all ranked this somewhere within their top 55 with only a trio of others not dong so. Of those, that included a pair of bottom 30s from both Cody Wants Out... and CoJoFan. While no one loses a top 10, both bboat11 and .indulgecountry do depart with a top 20 loss.

And with that I'm going to pause for this morning before eventually revealing the remaining two songs this evening. Any guesses as to which of those two songs will not make the top 20?! Stay tuned to find out ! Before I do sign off for the day, here's another (and likely last) showcase of honorable mentions.

I feel like this is a pretty strong top 30 other than I Can Still Make Cheyenne, although I definitely still have my preferences. Hopefully it, Blue Clear Sky, and No News will be among the next few to go.

I had a feeling it was a matter of time before My Maria got the shaft. Being a member on this board for the last 3.5 years i already kinda knew the song had some haters based on things i’ve read on various country topics. Still, i feel like this deserved at least top 10. But…it is what it is i guess🤷‍♂️
