And that's a wrap, folks. I'm out. and that was my feelings after seeing "Strawberry Wine" at #5, and then bboat11 's ridiculous claim that SW is an A song against A+++ songs like umm what?! 1000% rooting for Jo Dee As if getting an A is an insult. These are ALL among the most iconic country songs of literally all-time. Y'all can go spit in Flops' soup, as he deserves, and leave me to love everything to varying degrees in peace!!

Blue, Clear Sky is one of his better ones--not one of my favorites, to be clear. I find the vocal to be grating. Carried Away is one of the five or so songs by him I can take (Give It Away, Carrying Your Love with Me, Check Yes or No being the other ones, maybe Living For the Night).

1. “Heads Carolina, Tails California” - Jo Dee Messina Hell yeah!!! Congrats to Jo Dee! “Heads Carolina, Tails California” is a fantastic jam, a timeless masterpiece. And look at me scoring the #1 perfect ranking of a YE RD! This is very rare. Perfect ending for me!

While George Strait's "Blue Clear Sky" might've started off as the song to beat, in the end it came down to both "Heads Carolina, Tails California" and "It Matters to Me" with the latter holding onto the top spot for the majority of the last half. Surprisingly, 🌺CountryLineDancer was the only participant to place the winning song at the top of their list (congrats on the perfect ranking!) while "It Matters to Me" received two #1 rankings from both toomuchboy and Cody Wants Out.... There really wasn't much any other song could've done to overcome Jo Dee, however, especially given that she was able to amass ten top 10 rankings overall with all of the others coming inside the top 40. That said, Faith's song did only receive one non-top 40 ranking as well with the majority of the others all still being top 10s or 15s.

Congratulations to Jo Dee, and congratulations to 🌺CountryLineDancer !!! This basic taste is rare for you, but nice to see! "Heads Carolina" is an ICONIC debut, and I just love her voice so much I'm always happy to see her win big rankdowns! She's one of those artists who could win every rankdown and I would never get tired of it!!! A top 2 for Faith is an incredible accomplishment for a year-end rankdown as well, but "It Matters To Me" is a deserving recipient imo! This is by far one of my favorites from her early-career, and I still have yet to get tired of it while songs like "Wild One" have become a bit overplayed through the years. George should have beat her into the top 2, but definitely no hard feelings towards her or this incredible song!

She's one of those artists who could win every rankdown and I would never get tired of it!!! I think it’s up there as one of the best debut singles in the history of Country Music. It’s just amazing. And one thing about her voice, she has a way of inserting her personality in the delivery of every song she ever cut. Not many artists can do that, and she absolutely is a better vocalist because the listener FEELS her emotion in the way she sings it. I’ve always loved her for that.

Too bad Faith couldn't pull off a win for once, but at least Heads Carolina, Tails California is my favorite song by Jo Dee Messina.

And now I can finally say that's a wrap, folks! I want to send out a huge thank you to everyone for both participating in a rankdown of this size and following along as well. As bboat11 and some of my other fellow Tractors know, I've been longing to host a year-end rankdown for 1996 for quite a few years and I think I can now breathe a sigh of relief that it has finally come to pass! This remains one of my all-time favorite years in country music as I continue to revisit so many of these songs even to this very day. Oh, but wait...we're not quite done yet haha! There still remain two more year-end rankdowns to complete for the 90s with those being 1991 and 1995. Both of those will likely be coming in 2023, so I look forward to seeing y'all again soon. Until then, thanks again!

Thanks for hosting tim! I was not familiar with this list much, as I was -3 year old back then, but I made many great discoveries. It was also nice to many of my favs are also liked by many posters here. Looking forward to trying the last two YE RDs in the 90s.

This was the most perfect option for the top 2 after Deana got punted. Jo Dee's song is one of THE quintessential uptempo bops of the 90s, and Faith's song is easily one of her all-time best and one of the most cutting and beautiful power ballads I've ever heard. "Blue Clear Sky" is basically THE best windows-down summer driving song of all time. Except for literally the song that actually did win the rankdown. There's a reason why Cole Swindell stole the melody! 😂😂😂

"Blue Clear Sky" should have won, its a fantastic tune and one of George's very best! However since it didn't, I'm thrilled that "Heads Carolina, Tails California" did! Such an amazing jam! I will never use Cole Swindell's copycat song when the original is so flawless! Thanks for hosting tim and I'm glad a song I actually like won :kii:

Not many artists can do that, and she absolutely is a better vocalist because the listener FEELS her emotion in the way she sings it. I’ve always loved her for that. That is definitely one of her biggest strengths for me as well. Few singers can do an upbeat uptempo that lifts your spirits, while also being able to wreck you with a languishing ballad the next, as well as Jo Dee Messina. Her sass is unmatched, but the vocal performance of something like "Even God Must Get the Blues" is absolutely masterclass. I feel like she should be remembered a lot better than she is as an artist. She has a few HUGE singles that are forever engrained in country radio gold playlists, but her status as an artist definitely took a hit from being saddled to Curb Records. If she'd been on a major label, she probably would've had a longer shelf life (they just flat-out killed her career in 2006) and I'm sad that their ineptitude as a label took a toll on how well her legacy has held up. If nothing else, it's great to see a little bit of a rejuvenation/introduction of her to a younger crowd through Cole's new single.

Wow…what a Top 5, especially as it actually managed to still be shocking! What on EARTH is Deana doing outside the Top 2?! “Strawberry Wine” is easily one of the most iconic songs of all time, regardless of what genre it came from. It’s just undeniable. That said, I’m very happy to see Faith be the one to wrestle out a runner-up finish! What a thrill for me, as she’s long been one of my absolute favorites and is even on my label with castleoblivion26’s PCT50 chart. (Vote for “You’re Still Here” if you would! Please ) If it wasn’t Deana, there was literally no other correct option but Jo Dee. That is the most iconic song of the entire 90s decade in country music, right there alongside “Fancy.” Very glad to see her win, and to see the tiny little resurgence of her popularity and relevance thanks to Cole Swindell! Thanks for hosting tim and I very much look forward to 1991 and 1995! Whether that be to actually participate or just watch along as I did here.

Thank you tim for such a fun rankdown. Although I think Deana had the best song that year and after she exited I was hoping for Faith, JoDee winning is okay too. Thanks again!
