That Dua Lipa/Megan song is a huge flop. There is no other way to spin it.
TBH Megan's music is repetitive and it's no wonder it isn't setting the charts on fire.
Dua can produce something so much better.

Dua can produce something so much better. This was obvious to me in Week 1, when the production did not meet the advertising for this song. Not only did it fail to be #1 on the Hot 100 or streaming charts, it couldn’t even muster 8000 or so copies to even get the sales #1. There was just very little interest in this song. It also didn’t help that Dua still has 2 songs charting very high on the charts.

Something about Out Of Time makes me not care about it that much. For the sake of this album cycle I hope it becomes a hit for Weeknd That's not looking likely based on its opening numbers. It will have to be a sleeper in order to become a hit and it will take a lot more time. The video was also nothing special, and was kind of a wasted opportunity with Squid Game actress HoYeon Jung co-starring, they could've incorporated themes from that show into the video that would've generated much more buzz (maybe licensing restrictions prevented that though). It's still highly surprising and aggravating how the song is currently the only Dawn FM song in Spotify's top 200 (and only #133 at that!), while numerous songs from his previous projects are charting, even Starboy and BBTM!
I feel like this is what happens when SYT is literally still in the top 10 on Spotify when you combine both versions. This song is surprisingly doing well when talking about his legacy and it’s probably already his 2nd biggest hit of all time. Dawn FM is basically the In Your Eyes in this situation which is really unfortunate as the project is amazing. BL is also still lingering up and down the lower half of the Spotify charts. People are still stuck with these singles more than anything and that’s why Dawn FM has trouble with being its own identity. The songs that he’s featured on right now has absolutely nothing to do with the affection of getting another hit out, it’s literally mainly SYT that’s still going strong.

Yeah it's too bad, because the songs are actually good, it's a solid album! (though I'm not too crazy about Out Of Time). I guess they probably just should've waited a lot longer to release it, till the AH singles were largely out of the picture.

How the fuck would that make any sense within the context of the song, album or artistic vision that Abel has for this era

How the f**k would that make any sense within the context of the song, album or artistic vision that Abel has for this era Yeah I was confused by that post. Abel has clearly been doing storylines for his past two eras, so to suggest him do a Squid Game themed video is weird. I enjoyed the video and it made me appreciate the song more tbh.

For what it’s worth, this was the music video effect for SYT on Spotify:
68(+93) The Weeknd - Save Your Tears 320,000 (+100,443)
It also moved from 95 -> 46 -> 21 on the Hot 100.

Yknow just because you cast a famous actor in a music video doesn't mean you have to incorporate that actor's past work in that video? This is far from the first music video to feature and promote an actor before, this isn't that new. UN DIA didn't shoehorn references of Money Heist just because Urusula Corbero was in the video. Same with Carly Rae Jepsen getting Tom freaking Hanks for the video for I Really Like You Not to mention, as much as I love Squid Game (duh), it's more than 6 months old at this point and just having a whole music video about it would be striking while the iron was ice cold. It would be like Dont Wanna Know music video where they made it a rip of Pokémon Go but 5 months after it was cool, so it came across as lame and cheesy. And as people have already mentioned, the themes and aesthetics of Squid Game have nothing to do with the Weeknd's style.

I can't believe Jim Carrey was in the "Out Of Time" video and they didn't theme it around Sonic the Hedgehog 2! Huge missed opportunity!

Crazy to think that just a few years ago, the expectation was that album cycles basically ended when they were released. Even in 2020 a successful post-album single was seen as kind of a miracle, now some artists are struggling to move on from their 2 yr old albums.

Some people just have bad takes on just about everything, and unfortunately like to share them, often, it seems. But I'll digress on that topic.
Anyway, I was reading a chart beat write-up from an old Billboard where they were addressing the sales/radio mix in the Hot 100 formula back in the early 2000s. Back when there weren't many singles you could buy, and all it took was a big sales week to make a huge debut, even without any airplay. It touched on how chart followers and industry folk were divided on the issue, because it didn't seem right that a song without much exposure could debut in the top 10 ahead of many massively popular radio songs. I thought it was pretty topical 20 years later. The writer made it clear that Billboard is always trying to find the middle ground in an impossible-to-please-everyone scenario. Like today.

Some of us cautioned them to hold out until one sees the numbers, but some people had to rush in with the bad takes that it would be an obvious #1 smash hit. Sometimes the hype is justified, but most of the time it's not.

Say My Name: 15 Musicians Who Name-Checked Themselves in Pop Songs While hip-hop is riddled with self-referential lines, the practice is a bit less common in the mainstream pop world.www.billboard.com/lists/musicians-who-say-their-names-in-pop-songs/By Gil Kaufman 04/7/2022 Harry Styles joined an exclusive club of pop superstars with the release of his single “As It Was” April 1. With lyrics in which he casually drops his own name, Styles continues a storied tradition of chart-toppers who find a way to mention themselves. While hip-hop is riddled with self-referential lines — Eminem‘s 1999 smash “My Name Is” is essentially an ode to the rapper’s multiple personas — the practice is a bit less common in the mainstream pop world. Of course, hip-pop cross-over maestro Lil Nas X made the practice perfect in April 2021 with the title track to his most recent album, “Montero (Call me By Your Name).” The song launched at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and put the rapper’s real name — Montero Lamar Hill — right up front in the title, though not in the lyrics. Shakira also gave it a shot on her 2005 global smash “Hips Don’t Lie,” in which she made her name into an incantation in the first verse, but outsourced the self-love to Wyclef, who intones, “No fighting/ We got the refugees up in here (no fighting)/ No fighting/ Shakira, Shakira,” then going on to name-check the topliner no less than 10 times total. And rockers aren’t immune to naming themselves in tunes, either. Just a sampling of bands who’ve put their names in the title (or the lyrics): Bad Company (“Bad Company”), Black Sabbath (“Black Sabbath”), Talk Talk (“Talk Talk”), Bo Diddley (“Bo Diddley”), Wang Chung (“Everybody Have Fun Tonight”) and Metallica, who bellowed “Hotel rooms and motorways, life out here is raw/ But we’ll never stop, we’ll never quit, ’cause we’re Metallica!” on “Whiplash,” a tribute to their hard-charging fans on their 1984 debut, Kill ‘Em All. Check out our breakdown of 15 iconic self-referential pop tracks. Harry Styles, 'As It Was'The first single from Styles’ upcoming third album, Harry’s House, drops his name in the adorable intro, in which his 5-year-old goddaughter Ruby Winston chirps, “Go on, Harry, we want to say goodnight to you.” Later in the video for the song, Harry gets in on the action as well, singing, “Answer the phone/ ‘Harry are you sitting at home on the floor/ What kind of pills are you on?'” Lady Gaga, 'Bad Romance'
From early on, Gaga was not afraid to let us know who she was. Just like in her 2008 breakthrough hit “Just Dance” (which opened with the name-check “Gaga, oh eh”), her 2009 follow-up “Bad Romance” found the artist paying homage to herself in the chorus, on which she sings, “Ra-ra-ah-ah-ah/ Gaga, ooh-la-la-la.” Mariah Carey, 'Don't Forget About Us' Mariah was feeling reflective on her 2005 The Emancipation of Mimi album, especially on the album’s fifth single, on which she promised her lover that she was absolutely, positively irreplaceable. “And if she’s got your head all messed up now/ That’s the trickery,” she sang. “So why you act like you don’t know how this lovin’ used to be?/ I bet she can’t do like me, she’ll never be MC.” Britney Spears, 'Gimme More'One of the most iconic “have I mentioned me?” lyrics of the millennium crops up in the first few seconds of Britney’s 2007 Blackout track. “It’s Britney, b—h,” she intones in the coquettishly whispered intro to the dance floor banger. Jason DeRulo, 'Whatcha Say'The TikTok titan was feeling himself in 2009 on this smash single in which he wastes no time giving himself some attention. The singer croons his full name in the first verse of the first single from his self-titled debut album on the track that interpolates Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek.” He slips in the shout-out after a chorus of female voices sing “Wh-wh-what did you say? (J-J-J-R)/ Mm whatcha say/ Mm that you only meant well? Well of course you did/ Mm whatcha say (Jason DeRulo).” Prince, 'My Name Is Prince'For an artist who famously gave up his stage name on his 14th studio album (which premiered the singer’s unpronounceable male/female glyph mash-up on the cover), Prince had plenty to say about it on the album’s first single. “My name is Prince, and I am funky/ My name is Prince, the one and only,” he sings in the funk-hop song’s first verse. He would sing it a total of 22 times, including 10 times to wind the track out. Janet Jackson, 'Nasty'When Ms. Jackson took Control on her 1986 album, she did so with this upbeat dance tune that demanded a nasty groove and nasty boys while featuring her signature, no-nonsense call to arms. “I’m not a prude, I just want some respect/ So close the door if you want me to respond/ ‘Cause privacy is my middle name/ My last name is control,” the youngest Jackson family star sang. “No, my first name ain’t baby/ It’s Janet… Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty.” Lana Del Rey, 'This Is What Makes Us Girls'LDR’s second studio album, 2012’s Born to Die, featured this cinematic, string-spiked pop tune on which the singer-songwriter muses about the carefree days of misspent teenage rebellion. “There she was, my new best friend/ High heels in her hand, swayin’ in the wind,” she sings. “While she starts to cry/ Mascara running down her little Bambi eyes/ ‘Lana, how I hate those guys.'” Jennifer Lopez, 'Jenny From the Block'It’s rare when the song that becomes your musical calling card also happens to feature your name in the title. But this lead single from Lopez’s third album, 2002’s This Is Me… Then, in which she longs to stay humble in the face of fame contains a line that the actress-singer will likely be hearing fans shout at her for the rest of her life. “Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got/ I’m still, I’m still Jenny from the block,” she sings. Rihanna, 'Better Have My Money'Rihanna’s urgent 2015 trap anthem is a classic club banger on which the singer not only demands her dough in a very explicit manner, but manages to work herself into the mix in an equally forceful manner. “Turn up to Rihanna while the whole club f—in’ wasted/ Every time I drop, I am the only thing y’all playin’/ In a drop top, doin’ hundred, y’all in my rearview mirror racin’/ Where y’all at? Where y’all at? Where y’all at?” she sings. Usher, 'Yeah'Usher’s classic 2004 crunk&B hit featuring killer verses from Lil Jon and Ludacris was the lead single from his fourth album, the smash Confessions. The song — which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks — wasn’t shy about throwing around the singer’s name, opening with it whispered up top in the first verse, “Peace up, A-Town down/ Yeah, yeah, OK, OK!/ Usher, Usher, Usher, Usher,” then circling back in the final verse with Luda’s couplet, “Take that, rewind it back/ Ur-sher got the voice that make your booty go…” Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, 'Beauty and a Beat'In a fun twist, Bieber isn’t actually the one who utters his name on this club banger from JB’s third album, 2012’s Believe. His guest star, Minaj, does the honors — twice — including in the opening line when she announces, “Young Money/ Nicki Minaj, Justin.” She comes back around on her verse, where she raps, “World tours, it’s mine/ Ten little letters on a big sign/ Justin Bieber/ You know I’mma hit ’em with the ether.” Madonna, 'Bitch I'm Madonna'No one has ever accused Madonna of being shy, in the studio or on the stage. But on the third single from her lucky 13th studio album, 2015’s Rebel Heart, the pop icon made sure everyone remembered her name in the most in-your-face way possible. “We go hard or we go home/ We gon’ do this all night long/ We get freaky if you want/ B–ch I’m Madonna/ B–ch, b–ch I’m Madonna/ B–ch, b–ch I’m Madonna,” she sings in a confident, taunting vocal on the club banger featuring Nicki Minaj. Backstreet Boys, 'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)'The Backstreet Boys perfected the self-referential song title with their career-making 1997 hit “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),” which features the iconic refrain, “Everybody/ Rock your body/ Everybody/ Rock your body right/ Backstreet’s back all right!” Mandy Moore, 'Candy'Way before she was a TV titan on This Is Us, Moore tipped her own hat on the 1999 bubble-pop track “Candy.” The first single from her debut album not only rhymed with her name, but also featured a bridge on which she sang, “You know who you are/ Your love’s as sweet as candy/ I’ll be forever yours/ Love always, Mandy.”

Jason DeRulo and DJ Khaled say their name at the beginning of every song. Now, if they did a collab together, whose name gets said? Or do both say their name?

It's hard to say what will happen with Out of Time because it's so early, Weeknd hits are usually pretty slow burning so we should check back in around June and then we can start the flop discussion.

I feel like he’ll just push the songs that the fans like the most like Is There Someone Else or Less Than Zero which i can see both getting traction. Out Of Time was definitely a safe choice so i’m literally hoping that radio can be able to make this a hit if anything. Crazy to think that just a few years ago, the expectation was that album cycles basically ended when they were released. Even in 2020 a successful post-album single was seen as kind of a miracle, now some artists are struggling to move on from their 2 yr old albums. Save Your Tears is truly a one of a kind post album single and i don’t think anyone would’ve expected it to be as big as it was (and still is), despite it being one of the fan favorites from AH. Maybe it’s because of the Ari remix but even on its own prior it was lingering in the top 10 and was fairly charting well. Would it have been the 2nd biggest hit of last year and still be on the charts now if it wasn’t for the remix? definitely not and i think that could’ve worked to Dawn FM’s advantage. I think i could’ve been the cause of this curse that he has as i predicted back in early 2020 that he would have a #1 YE hit, and that probably had a little too much power to it.

If Out of Time fails to gain traction, I don't really see them getting anymore hits out of this era unless they end up pushing a track with a high profile remix from an artist like Drake or Ariana again. I'm assuming the next record is gonna be Hell/Heaven themed from what Abel has been teasing, meaning the next one will probably have a more hip-hop/dark r&b sound and then he can get back all the fans that aren't vibing with the pop stuff. He'll be fine in the end.

^ OVOXO is the most obvious tactic that Abel could pull to get another #1, and maybe it could happen if nothing else works.

First new Pink Floyd song in decades is here
Pink Floyd - Hey Hey Rise Up (feat. Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Boombox)
Pink Floyd Releasing ‘Hey Hey Rise Up’ In Support of Ukrainian People The track featuring members David Gilmour and Nick Mason and Ukrainian vocalist Andriy Khlyvnyuk is the first PF original in nearly 30 years.
By Gil Kaufman
04/7/2022
Pink Floyd‘s David Gilmour and Nick Mason have recorded the band’s first new original material since 1994’s Division Bell album, the song “Hey Hey Rise Up.” The track is in support of the people of Ukraine in the midst of the horrific, unprovoked war launched in February by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Due out on Friday (April 8), it features the Floyd guitarist/vocalist and drummer joined by longtime PF bass player Guy Pratt and Nitin Sawhney on keyboards, as well as vocals by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of the Ukrainian band Boombox.
Global 'Stand Up for Ukraine' Social Media Rally Adds Additional Music Superstars 04/07/2022
“We, like so many, have been feeling the fury and the frustration of this vile act of an independent, peaceful democratic country being invaded and having its people murdered by one of the world’s major powers,” said Gilmour, who has a Ukrainian daughter-in-law and grandchildren. The track was recorded on March 30 and features a cappella vocals lifted from this Instagram post from Khlyvnyuk singing in Sofiyskaya Square in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
“I played him a little bit of the song down the phone line and he gave me his blessing. We both hope to do something together in person in the future,” Gilmour said in a statement about the song, which weaves in Khlyvnyuk’s version of the Ukrainian protest song “The Red Viburnum in the Meadow,” written during WWI and adopted lately as a global rallying cry against the war. The title of the new song was inspired by the last line of “Meadow,” which translates into “Hey hey rise up and rejoice.”
The slow march tune is anchored by Khlyvnyuk’s forceful vocals over one of Gilmour’s signature keening guitar solos and the video features emotional footage of women, children and families impacted by the war, which has displaced more than 10 million Ukrainians to date. The clip was directed by Mat Whitecross (Coldplay, Rolling Stones) and shot the same day the track was recorded in the barn where Gilmour and his family recorded their pandemic “Von Trapped” livestream session during lockdown; it was also the spot where the guitarist recorded his “Barn Jams” with late PF founding member keyboardist Richard Wright in 2007.
According to the statement, Gilmour spoke to Khlyvnyuk from his hospital bed in Kyiv, where the Boombox singer is recovering from a mortar shrapnel injury. “I hope it will receive wide support and publicity,” said Gilmour. “We want to raise funds for humanitarian charities, and raise morale. We want express our support for Ukraine and in that way, show that most of the world thinks that it is totally wrong for a superpower to invade the independent democratic country that Ukraine has become.”
The artwork (seen below) features a painting of the sunflower, the national flower of Ukraine, by Cuban artist Yosan Leon; it is described as a “direct reference to the woman who was seen around the world giving sunflower seeds to Russian soldiers and telling them to carry them in their pockets so that when they die sunflowers will grow.”

The video was also nothing special, and was kind of a wasted opportunity with Squid Game actress HoYeon Jung co-starring, they could've incorporated themes from that show into the video that would've generated much more buzz (maybe licensing restrictions prevented that though).
How the f**k would that make any sense within the context of the song, album or artistic vision that Abel has for this era Trust me it wouldn't be that hard. First of all it's just POP MUSIC, nothing has to fully make sense or adhere to a strict narrative/thematic framework and no one is going to care that much, lol. Even if it's just superficial or tangential themes/imagery coinciding, they could have made it work and it wouldn't have been seen as cheap or anachronous. I'm not saying it's something they definitely should have done and it was an absolute missed opportunity, but since Squid Game WAS nothing less than the biggest show on tv within the last year, it did lend itself to a huge marketing tie-in and would've been a cool route they could've gone. But even if they didn't choose Squid Game, they definitely could have come up with something better than what they did, which like many music videos just ended up being stupid, repetitive, and boring.

Bam Bam is losing spins although it could still recover. I think Sweetest Pie has also slowed down enough that it might peak in the next few days too. Seems like radio didn't bite.
