Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Unlimited Love’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart The band's No. 1 with 'Unlimited Love' marks its second leader and first chart-topping effort since 2006's 'Stadium Arcadium.' www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/red-hot-chili-peppers-unlimited-love-billboard-200-albums-chart-debut-1235057502/

04/10/2022Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Unlimited Love replaces Machine Gun Kelly’s Mainstream Sellout atop the chart (the latter falls to No. 9 in its second week), giving the list back-to-back rock albums at No. 1 for the first time in over four years. It last happened when The Killers’ Wonderful Wonderful debuted at No. 1 on the Oct. 14, 2017 chart, a week after Foo Fighters’ Concrete and Gold opened at No. 1. (Rock albums are defined as those that have hit Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart.) The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new April 16, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on April 12. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Unlimited Love’s 97,500 equivalent album units earned, album sales comprise 82,500 (it’s the top-selling album of the week); SEA units comprise 14,500 (equaling 18.96 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs); and TEA units comprise 500. Notably, Unlimited Love is Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in nearly 16 years — since Stadium Arcadium spent its first two weeks atop the list (May 27-June 3, 2006 charts). The last act to go longer between No. 1 albums was Celine Dion, who waited 17 years and nearly eight months between A New Day Has Come (one week at No. 1 on April 13, 2002) and Courage (one week at No. 1 on Nov. 30, 2019). Unlimited Love notches the largest week, by equivalent album units and album sales, for any rock album in over a year. The last larger week by a rock set was registered by Paul McCartney’s McCartney III when it debuted at No. 2 on the Jan. 2, 2021-dated chart with 107,000 units — of which album sales comprised 104,000. Unlimited Love’s first-week sales were boosted by its availability across multiple color vinyl LP variants and special editions (including versions for Target, Walmart, Amazon, independent record stores and the band’s official webstore). All told, the set sold 38,500 copies on vinyl — the largest sales week for an album on vinyl in 2022, and the second-biggest sales week for a rock album on vinyl since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991. Only the debut frame of Jack White’s Lazaretto (40,000) posted a larger week for a rock album on vinyl (June 28, 2014 chart) since 1991. Thus, Unlimited Love claims the largest week on a vinyl for a rock album by a group in that 31-year span. Unlimited Love was ushered in by the No. 1 hit “Black Summer” on the Alternative Airplay chart — the band’s 14th leader on the tally. The new album is the group’s first with guitarist John Frusciante since Stadium Arcadium in 2006. The new set’s release was celebrated with some Los Angeles-specific celebrations — appropriate, since the band formed in L.A. The group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on March 31, staged a surprise show at the Fonda Theater on April 1 and played an in-store performance at Amoeba Music in Hollywood on April 7 (the store’s first in-store performance in over two years, and first at its new location). The group’s Flea even played “The Star-Spangled Banner” on bass guitar at the Los Angeles Lakers’ home game against the Denver Nuggets on April 3. (No doubt Lakers fans were also delighted to know that Unlimited Love was also pressed on limited edition purple and gold vinyl.) At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Lil Durk’s chart-topping 7220 holds in the runner-up spot with 51,000 equivalent album units earned (down 18%). A trio of other former No. 1s is next, with the Encanto soundtrack steady at No. 3 (50,000; down 14%), Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album stationary at No. 4 (44,500; down less than 1%) and Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour a non-mover at No. 5 (40,000; up 20% following her multiple Grammy Award wins on April 3, as well as her performance of “Drivers License” on the CBS-TV awards broadcast). The Weeknd’s compilation The Highlights is likewise steady at No. 6 with 34,000 equivalent album units earned (up 2%). Yeat’s 2 Alive returns to the top 10, bolting from No. 69 to No. 7 with 31,500 units (up 141%), following its deluxe reissue on April 1 with additional bonus tracks. The album debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the March 5-dated chart. Drake’s former leader Certified Lover Boy falls 7-8 with nearly 31,000 equivalent album units earned (down 1%), Machine Gun Kelly’s Mainstream Sellout falls 1-9 in its second week (30,500; down 67%) and Doja Cat’s Planet Her is pushed down 9-10 (30,000; up 4% following her televised Grammy Award win on April 3 for best pop duo/group performance for the album’s “Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA). Luminate, formerly MRC Data, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes an exhaustive and thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Wow, Morgan Wallen is on some rare ground as it ties Paula Abdul this week. Gives you an idea just how massive Paula was between 1988 and 1991.

HITS had Thomas Rhett in the top ten. He does not appear there in Billboard.

Different, indeed- HITS was notably off on the final Chili Peppers total. The sales tally is impressive, though so is the streaming number (relatively, for a band that's been around as long as RHCP has been).

I think the common misperception when the numbers are different is "HITS was off" - it appears to me after watching this for several years - HITS measures sales differently than Soundscan (or whatever they call themselves now)
"Hits was off" implies an error - rather than just simply a different but similar method
If they are different - is one wrong? No way to tell - but Billboard has always been the "accepted" number.
The difference between 6 and 12 on the final hits list was 5000 units -- with different but similar methods in play there is going to be some variation

True, Gary- "notably different" from the Luminate (the latest name) number may be better phrasing. :)
recordyear- that could be part of it. often, the HITS and Billboard numbers don't differ that heavily. Though this week's 14,000 difference is pretty sizable.

Why would Taylor release this friday? Taylor is going to announce her next album on Friday. I don’t expect a surprise drop, but you never know. At the very least, we should get the date of the next TS album.

Billboard should consider expanding some of the album charts.
Catalog for example feels like it should now be 100 positions instead of 50. Especially when every album on Catalog is charting on the Billboard 200 any given week so we already have an idea of the top 50 anyways.
I also wish the R&B/Hip-Hop charts can be expanded for the same reason. R&B/Hip-Hop, Country, and Rock should be 75 positions.
I’m also not sure as to why the Current chart is still based on pure sales. The Catalog chart is based on equivalent units so how does that logically make sense?

^True, about the catalog chart. Since catalog titles became eligible to chart on the 200 again, it hasn't been as interesting to follow, given, as you said, all of the top 50 appear on the 200. Frankly, I'd just discontinue the chart, as it doesn't really have much relevance nowadays, since most of the accumulated weeks on since 2009 overlap with weeks the titles appeared on the 200.
As for Current Albums- the chart should be called Current Album Sales, if it's to continue reflecting such.
Michael Bublé's latest is this week's biggest dropper (146 spots). And, keshi's album drops right off the chart from last week's No. 16 position.
And, thanks for posting the charts, Gary.

I think the common misperception when the numbers are different is "HITS was off" - it appears to me after watching this for several years - HITS measures sales differently than Soundscan (or whatever they call themselves now) "Hits was off" implies an error - rather than just simply a different but similar method If they are different - is one wrong? No way to tell - but Billboard has always been the "accepted" number. The difference between 6 and 12 on the final hits list was 5000 units -- with different but similar methods in play there is going to be some variation Hits estimates numbers, no? They don't actually tally all units sold, which Luminate (Soundscan, etc.) has always done, so in that case, Hits would be compared against Luminate as being "on or off" the real numbers.

Has Hits openly said they are just a rough estimate of what Billboard does? or do they from time to time mock Billboard and their methods and boast their methods sometimes come out better than Billboards?
What number is actually right ? No way to know unless you count them yourself.

On the Billboard 200, the highest-ranking beneficiary from the Grammy Awards is Olivia Rodrigo's former No. 1 'Sour.'
The 2022 Grammy Awards shine on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 16), as a bevy of albums see big moves and unit gains in the wake of the April 3 awards – including eye-catching climbs for Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste, Justin Bieber, Chris Stapleton and Silk Sonic.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multimetric consumption as measured in equivalent album units.
On the latest Billboard 200, which reflects the U.S. sales and streaming tracking week of April 1-7, the highest-ranking beneficiary from the Grammy Awards is Olivia Rodrigo’s former No. 1 Sour. The set holds at No. 5 with 40,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 7 (up 20%), according to Luminate, formerly MRC Data.
Rodrigo performed the album’s No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Drivers License” on the CBS-broadcast Grammy Awards, and won two trophies presented during the televised show (best pop vocal album, for Sour, and best new artist). Rodrigo additionally won best pop solo performance for “Drivers License,” but that award was presented earlier in the day, during the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony, which was not televised (though it was livestreamed on Grammy.com).
Doja Cat, who won the televised award for best pop duo/group performance for “Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA, sees her Planet Her album gain by 4% (the set’s track list includes “Kiss”). It is pushed down 9-10 on the Billboard 200 with 30,000 units. Doja Cat’s previous album, Hot Pink, also captures an increase, rising 109-99 with a 2% uptick (to 10,000 units).
Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever jumps 31-17 with 21,000 units (up 16%), following Eilish’s Grammy Awards performance of the album’s title track. Eilish was also nominated for seven trophies at the awards, including album of the year (for Happier), record of the year and song of the year (both for “Happier”). Eilish’s previous albums When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and Dont Smile at Me both move up the list as well (68-56 [14,000 units; up 6%] and 148-132 [9,000 units; up 3%], respectively).
Performer and nominee Justin Bieber bounds up the chart with his album of the year-nominated Justice, climbing 35-20 with 19,000 units (up 8%). On the Grammys, Bieber performed the album’s “Peaches,” featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon, which was nominated for multiple awards, including record and song of the year.
Best new artist nominee The Kid LAROI sees his chart-topping F*ck Love move 28-22 with 18,000 (up less than 1%).
Performer and five-time winner Jon Batiste makes a splashy re-entry at No. 25 with We Are, which won album of the year. The set rallies a whopping 2,746% to 18,000 units earned for the week. It’s easily the album’s best week yet in terms of both units and chart rank. The set previously spent just one week on the chart, when it debuted at No. 86 on the April 3, 2021-dated list.
If We Are goes no higher on the Billboard 200, it will be the lowest-peaking winner of album of the year since 1995, when Tony Bennett’s MTV Unplugged peaked at No. 48 after taking home the award on March 1, 1995. Every other winner for album of the year, from the 1996 through 2021 ceremonies, peaked in the top 10 of the chart either before or after its win.
We Are also re-enters Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart at No. 3, a new high, with 12,000 sold (up 3,764%).
Chris Stapleton’s best country album winner Starting Over vaults 79-28 on the Billboard 200 with nearly 18,000 units (up 41%). Stapleton performed the album’s “Cold” on the show, and also took home the awards for best country song (for “Cold”) and best country solo performance (for the album’s “You Should Probably Leave”). Stapleton’s earlier album Traveller also gallops up the list, moving 63-49 with 15,000 units (up 10%).
Silk Sonic’s An Evening With Silk Sonic zooms 111-30 following the duo’s four wins and show-opening performance. The pair (Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak) opened the Grammy Awards with the song “777” from the Evening album. Of the duo’s four wins, two were presented on-air: record of the year and song of the year, both for the album’s lead single “Leave the Door Open.”
Rounding out the Grammy gainers in the top 40 of the Billboard 200 is Lil Nas X’s Montero, as it rises 45-40 with 16,000 units (up 6%). On the Grammy Awards, Lil Nas X — who was a five-time nominee this year — performed a three-song medley of tunes from the album (“Dead Right Now,” the title track and “Industry Baby,” with Jack Harlow).
Other notable Grammy gainers on the Billboard 200, outside the top 40 but with at least a 10% increase each are: Jazmine Sullivan’s best R&B album winner Heaux Tales (re-entry at No. 164 with 8,000 units; up 32%), Tyler, the Creator’s best rap album winner Call Me If You Get Lost (129-88 with 11,000 units; up 23%), performer and nominee Jack Harlow’s Thats What They All Say (113-74 with 12,000 units; up 20%), Baby Keem’s The Melodic Blue (containing the best rap performance winner “Family Ties,” moving 93-70 with 13,000 units; up 13%), performer and winner H.E.R.’s Back Of My Mind (re-entry at No. 199 with 7,000 units; up 12%) and Taylor Swift’s album of the year-nominated Evermore (123-103 with 10,000 units; up 11%).
