Between 1968 and around 1972. The top 50 portion of the Hot 100 bucks as actually sales only So I looked into that before and I'm not entirely sure if that was true, but if it was then that serves my point even more: for a while there was a major component of popularity, airplay, completely missing from the chart, proving that the Hot 100 has not always measured strict down-the-line popularity.

Yeah, recurrency has always existed in different forms.
Pre-1991, it was just the radio DJs removing songs from their reports once they peaked. That is the same basis as why recurrent rules were brought in once Billboard could finally electronically track music... they still wanted songs that peaked to be pushed out the chart.

Well it is true. Widely available at40 shows from 1970-73 Also magazines from that era. I don’t remember the precise dates but airplay only applied to the bottom 50 for a while

Former Wanna One member Ha Sung-woon and BTS‘ Jimin debut at No. 2 on Billboard‘s Hot Trending Songs chart (dated May 7), powered by Twitter, with their new collaboration, “With You.”
The track opens with 2.3 million Twitter mentions in the April 22-28 tracking week, according to Twitter, as it becomes just the third song in the chart’s brief history (dating to its October inception) to enter as high as No. 2, following SEVENTEEN’s “Rock With You” (Nov. 6) and TREASURE’s “Jikjin” (March 5).
“With You” earns Sung-woon and Jimin their first career solo entries on Hot Trending Songs. Jimin has charted five songs on the ranking as a member of BTS, including “Butter” – which reigns for a record-extending 20th week (3 million Twitter mentions, up 2%) – and one-week leader “Permission to Dance.”
“With You” concurrently begins at No. 1 on Billboard‘s all-genre Digital Song Sales chart as the top-selling song of the week, with 9,800 downloads sold, according to Luminate.
Meanwhile, led by “Butter” and “With You,” BTS and its members solo claim four of the top five on Hot Trending Songs, among seven total entries:
No. 1, BTS, “Butter” No. 2, Ha Sung-woon & Jimin, “With You” No. 3, JIN, “Yours” No. 4, JIN, “Super Tuna” No. 6, Jung Kook, “Stay Alive” No. 8, V, “Christmas Tree” No. 19, BTS, “Dynamite” Billboard‘s Hot Trending Songs charts, powered by Twitter and sponsored by Capital One, track global music-related trends and conversations in real-time across Twitter, viewable over either the last 24 hours or past seven days. A weekly, 20-position version of the chart, covering activity from Friday through Thursday of each week, posts alongside Billboard‘s other weekly charts on Billboard.com each Tuesday. As long as Twitter mentions by BTS bots/army members don't count for points on the BBHot100, it's going to be tough for songs that have miniscule streaming/radio to chart even when they top the sales charts, even in such times as the present in the music industry.

The weirdest thing about that isn't the fact that they nearly own the entire Top 5 of Trending Songs, it's the fact that a song titled Christmas Tree is still in the Top 10 of Trending Songs in the month of May.

Speaking of recurrency, does anyone know the biggest fall off of the Hot 100 due to the 20-week recurrent rule? Run This Town (whose last week was #34) comes to mind acharts.co/song/48646(due to the 52-week recurrent rule would be interesting to know too, lol)
